Well, youd be wrong, as the new SE model comes with advanced photography features absent in the last-gen model.

The iPhone SE comes with Smart HDR 4, which automatically refines the contrast, lighting and skin tones for up to four people in a picture Deep Fusion, which was introduced in the iPhone 11 that can capture subtle details and textures in mid to low light settings and Photographic Styles, brought in with the iPhone 13 that lets users choose a style like Warm or Cool while keeping everything else look natural.

Pictures taken on the iPhone SE dont necessarily look bad, but the added AI features on the iPhone SE 3 aim to make those snaps pop. The iPhone SE is rated for less battery life than the the iPhone 11, so you shouldn’t expect the longest endurance. For instance, Apple says that the iPhone SE delivers 13 hours of video playback, versus 17 hours for the iPhone 11.

On the Tom’s Guide Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over 4G LTE, the iPhone SE 2020 averaged 9 hours and 18 minutes. That’s well below the endurance of the iPhone 11 , iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max . The iPhone SE did, however, best the Pixel 4a, which scored a mere 8:55.

In my anecdotal testing, I found that the iPhone SE does have less staying power than my iPhone 11 Pro Max, as it has a smaller battery. For example, after unplugging the iPhone SE at 7 am and using it for web surfing, playing games, taking photos and more throughout the day, I had 20% juice left at 8 pm. That’s not bad, but my iPhone 11 Pro Max still had close to 40% power.

Unfortunately, the iPhone SE comes with Apples standard 5-watt Lightning charger. And with that you can expect to get to just 29% power in 30 minutes, based on our testing. If you want to be able to juice this phone to 50% in 30 minutes, youre going to have to pay extra for an 18W charger from Apple. Its $29 for the power brick and another $19 for the USB C to Lightning cable.

The iPhone SE 2020 is the affordable iPhone to beat, and the one of the best cheap phones you can get. Its the closest thing to future-proof youll find under $400, offering the fastest performance around, very good cameras, wireless charging and a premium design that outclasses cheap Android phones.

Yes, I wish the bezels were smaller and that Apple included Night mode for the camera and you dont get 5G connectivity but overall its hard to complain too much at this price. A 5G-capable iPhone SE 3 could be on the horizon, but it likely won’t arrive until 2022.

The iPhone XR is a tempting alternative to the iPhone SE as it now costs just $499. For that money you bet a bigger display and bigger battery but a slower CPU and less advanced cameras. If you prefer a smaller phone, however, this handset will not disappoint. Overall, the iPhone SE is the one of the best phones for those on a budget.

The iPhone Se’s Camera Is Good Not Great

The new iPhone SE doesn’t have a bad camera at all. And its A15 Bionic processor enables it to have some of the machine learning and camera capabilities of the iPhone 13 line, such as support for Smart HDR 4 and Deep Fusion, which helps it string multiple exposure shots together to deliver the best possible looking photo. But it’s just not as good as the camera on the iPhone 13 mini.

These two devices offer speedy components in pocket-friendly proportions, both at prices that are considerably lower than their larger siblings, making them clear contenders if you’re looking for the best iPhone on a budget.

However, despite these apparent similarities, when looking at the iPhone 12 mini vs iPhone SE you’ll see that they’re different in just about every way that counts. So which is the best compact smartphone for you?

The iPhone SE is priced from $429/£419, which is a $30/£30 price hike when compared to the $399/£389 iPhone SE . Apple has a habit of keeping prices the same with each new generation of device, so its disappointing to see the spike in price. Its understandable, however, the A15 and 5G upgrades warrant a higher price tag. Still, a smartphone above the $400/£400 mark doesnt have the same budget ring to it, especially since many of the best budget smartphoneswith 5G can be found for under $350.

This brings up the case for an even cheaper iPhone SE . Prior to the new models reveal, we talked about why Apple should deliver a $199 SE model, as it would entice newcomers to the iOS ecosystem. A Similar Single Camera

Like the previous-gen iPhone SE, Apple is sticking with a single 12-megapixel wide-angle lens. It will support an array of shooting modes, including the popular Portrait mode, and video recording modes like 4K, Slo-mo and Time-lapse. Because its the same lens, we dont expect giant improvements in how you shoot, though processing times for taking a photo should be improved, thanks to the A15 Bionic chip.

One key improvement with the cameras software will be the addition of Photographic Styles, which will allow the iPhone to customize how it takes a photo. You can select from a slew of styles like Rich Contrast before you take the shot, then you can switch on the fly. It will also support Smart HDR 4 and Deep Fusion, thanks to the new image signal processor inside the A15 Bionic.

Those with an iPhone 8, 7 or 6S or a first-gen iPhone SE will see some major improvements from the 12-megapixel lens as well as updated hardware.
