Apple supports fast wireless charging up to 7.5 watts. You can use any Qi-compatible wireless charging mat, like this one from Anker or this one from Belkin. Wireless charging is convenient and safe but it is not the fastest way to charge an iPhone. As the phone gets hotter on the pad, the amount of charge is reduced to protect the battery. This means wireless charging is slower than charging via a USB-C cable.
The iPhone 12 also includes a magnetic area on the back of the device, called MagSafe. This can be used with MagSafe accessories like the Apple MagSafe puck charger or the Belkin MagSafe dock. MagSafe is essentially a better version of Qi as the magnets auto-align with the case. Using the secure magnetic attachment, Apple enables up to 15 watt charging for MagSafe chargers. So for the best wireless charging, choose MagSafe over Qi but the USB-C cable is still the fastest overall.

So, how do they all perform? Let’s start with the 20W option, as that’s what Apple recommends if you’re after the optimal high-speed charging experience for your new iPhone. It also replaces the 18W brick that came with last year’s iPhone 11 Pro models, that used to cost $29 separately making it a slight improvement in power delivery, for less money.
Apple quotes roughly a 50% charge after a 30 minutes when using this USB-C adapter. In our experience, that seems a bit conservative. We actually saw 57% in that span of time on our iPhone 12, which isn’t too shabby at all. Sure, it’s not the 93% of the OnePlus 8T and its 65W Warp Charge system, but it’s likely speedy enough for most folks.;
We suppose if you connect the 20W charger to an iPhone 12 mini, you’ll see an even faster result than this, as that 5.4-inch variant is all but certain to pack a smaller battery while the iPhone 12 Pro Max may land closer to Cupertino’s official 50% estimate.
The next fastest option, as you might expect, is the MagSafe system. Using the wireless charger, we saw 32% from empty after a half hour. That’s hardly quick in the grand scheme of things, though it isn’t too bad for wireless charging. Wireless systems typically involve lower wattages and are less efficient in general, because they lose more potential energy as heat.
Ways To Charge Your New iPhone 12
Apple did the unthinkable with its new iPhone 12: It stopped including a charging brick in the box. It’s supposedly better for the environment, but that’s no real consolation when your phone dies and you don’t have a compatible charging brick to resurrect it.
To make matters worse, the cable that comes with the iPhone 12 is Lightning to USB-C. In other words, the part that connects to your phone is the same as always, but the other end won’t plug into your old USB charging brick. It’s time to find a new solution, unless you feel like using the same brick and cable combination you’ve always used. If that’s the case, party on, dudes.

Regular Old Charging Bricks
The easiest, cheapest, and most straightforward solution to this problem Apple arbitrarily created is to just buy a USB-C charging brick. That is, a little piece of plastic that you plug into a power outlet with a USB-C port for that special Lightning to USB-C cable you got with your new iPhone 12.
These are not difficult to acquire, as you might imagine. Apple sells one on its online store for $19. That one will more than likely do just fine for a majority of people. There’s nothing fancy about it, but we’re talking about charging a phone, not launching a Space Shuttle. You might as well just get what works.
If you’re inclined to get a little more advanced, however, brands like Anker and Aukey produce third-party charging bricks that come with multiple ports. You just need to spend more money to get them. This one from Aukey has both USB-C and old USB ports on it for $46, making it compatible with any Lightning cable you own. For about the same price, Anker has one with two USB-C connections on it if you really want a head start on the future.

No Charger In The Box: These Are Your Cheap iPhone 12 Charging Alternatives
You can stick with your existing charging cables and adapters, but spending as little as $14 can get you a faster charge.
The new iPhone 12 models are here — four of them! — and from ceramic screen protection to fancy new cameras, they’re chock-full of new features. But as was expected, Apple is stripping away accessories it had long included: The EarPod headphones and AC power adapter are both gone. Apple is pitching this as an environmental move, as it had already telegraphed when it pulled the chargers from the Apple Watch models announced last month.
The problem in a nutshell: The USB-C cable that the iPhone 12 models ship with won’t plug in to your USB-A chargers .
The only electronics you get in the box besides the iPhone 12 itself is a USB-C to Lightning cable. USB-C is basically better all-around than squared off USB-A connections: it’s smaller, it can’t be plugged in upside-down, it gives faster charging speeds and compatibility with recent Apple PCs. The only problem? The vast majority of folks still have drawers full of chargers with those old-fashioned rectangular USB-A ports.;
If that describes your situation, I have good news and bad news. The good news: Your existing cables and chargers will still work, but not at the fastest speeds possible. The bad news: If you want to make the leap into the USB-C era, you’re still going to have to spend a bit of money. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be more than $10 or $15.

In England, the government brought in a plastic carrier bag charge in October 2015 for larger stores. It was thought it would discourage you from using the widely used plastic carrier bag and instead bring your own way of carrying your items.
Carrier bags cost 5 pence but it was still affordable for those who forgot their bags or wanted to opt for the plastic option.
According to the UK government’s own figures, the seven main supermarket retailers saw a drop of 83% in plastic bag use after the charge was brought in.
Could a similar idea work for phone chargers? Making you think, “do I really need a new phone charger” may be something that ensures some customers sit back and consider whether it’s really necessary.
Many will be disappointed to have to buy a new phone charger, but it would make sense if Apple and Samsung still offered a charger along with your purchase for free but make sure you have to opt in to get one.
We don’t know how manufacturers would implement the lack of a charger in the box, but it may be it’s brought in as an option that is still free when you buy a new device but you’ll have to request it rather than getting one by default.
That would crack down on e-waste, but it also wouldn’t increase the cost of buying a new phone for anyone who does genuinely need a new one.
The Best Dual iPhone/ipad Chargers
But the amperage rating is only a measure of the chargers maximum capability. The actual amperage is determined by the load . According to Steve Sandler, founder and chief technical officer of the electronics analysis company AEi Systems, modern battery-powered electronics have a lot of complexity between the charger and the battery, including battery-charging circuits within the device and battery-protection circuits in the lithium-ion battery itself.
These circuits are designed to manage the flow of electricity to the battery, and if the circuits inside the iPhone were designed to tolerate 1 amp, but are routinely exposed to 2 amps, that could stress the system over time.
“Even though you may not instantaneously say, ‘Wow, I just destroyed my battery!’ you may limit its life over the long term,” Sandler says, “but you wouldn’t know for a year or more.”
Our advice: Since Apple claims compatibility between the iPad charger and iPhone, pay for AppleCare and charge your devices with the biggest wall chargers you have. If your battery degrades severely after the first year, make Apple give you a new one.
