Apple Watch Default And Recommended Goals

How To Change Apple Watch Activity Goals

Stand and Exercise each have default goals of 12 hours and 30 minutes respectively. To reach your stand goal, youll need to get up and move around once every hour for at least 12 hours in your day to achieve your goal. For exercise, thats 30 minutes of vigorous movement per day.

Your Apple Watch will automatically log exercise minutes when it detects an elevated heart rate and some kind of activity. If you use the Workouts app to log activities like walking, running, or resistance training, this will count toward your exercise goal. Youll find these listed in the Fitness app on your iPhone.

If youre consistently beating your goals, youll probably want to increase your targets. Its also a good idea to pay attention to your own schedule and adjust your goals as you see fit. If you workout consistently five days per week, then you might want to cut yourself some slack on your rest days by dropping your Move and Exercise targets.

The WHO recommends adults ages 18-64 do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity.

How To Change Your Activity Goals

Whether you need to tone down your Activity Goals because you are sick, or you are ready to ramp them up, its pretty easy to do. The Apple Watch makes life much easier on the whole, so it only makes sense for Apple to make adjusting goals simple.

Adjust your Move Goals

  • Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch.
  • Either swipe or use the Crown to go to the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Change Move Goal.
  • Adjust the Move Goal to your preferred setting.
  • Tap Update.
  • Change Exercise or Stand Goals

For some reason, Apple doesnt make it possible to adjust the Exercise or Stand goals. This is due to the fact that these are the globally recommended amounts for everyone to achieve on a daily basis. So youll need to get out and close those rings and make sure youre standing enough throughout the day.

On Series 4, 5 and 6 Apple Watches there’s also an ECG feature that can take electrocardiogram readings. Apple’s ECG app can tell whether your heart rhythm has atrial fibrillation or a normal sinus rhythm.

Getting a reading is as simple as placing a finger on the Digital Crown of the watch and waiting 30 seconds. ECG data will then be collected from the Watch electrodes and displayed in the Health app, which in turn can be shared via a PDF report with your doctor. Apple claims the test is 99 per cent accurate.

What Are The Apple Watch Fitness Targets And How Do You Set Them

All three of the Apple Watch rings are customisable – though this wasn’t always the case. The Exercise Ring is set at 30 minutes a day by default, while Stand is set at 12 times by default.

Exercise doesn’t need to be running, swimming, or a HIIT session though. It can be as simple as walking quickly, but you’ll need to be walking briskly to complete the exercise ring if you choose walking as your activity.

To complete the Stand Ring, you’ll need to be standing and moving for more than one minute per hour. Do that for 12 hours – or whatever you set it to – and you complete the blue ring.

The Move target refers to the number of active calories you burn in a day. The idea is to set it to be achievable, but not without some effort. Make your Move goal too low and you won’t try, set it too high and you’ll give up so be realistic.

The Apple Watch is the most popular fitness tracker and smartwatch in the world, and for good reason. Apple has been paying close attention to this device and continues to provide the right updates at the right times, on both the software and hardware side of things.

While getting notifications on your wrist is cool and all, the Apple Watch can do so much more than that. This starts with the Activity and Fitness tracking built-in without having to do very much on the user-end. But what if you want to change the activity goals for any reason?

Change Your Activity Goals In Watchos 6 Or Earlier

If you have an Apple Watch model that cant update to watchOS 7, or if you simply dont want to update it, you can still change your Move goal at any time, but you cant change your Exercise or Stand goals.

There are ways to spoof your Exercise goal so that you can sort of change it. It just wont be official on your Watch or in your Activity history.

To reduce your Exercise goal from 30 to 15 minutes, for example, you can keep track throughout the day and hit that 15 minutes of Exercise. Then you can open the Workout app, set the workout type as Other or Mind & Body, and let it run for 15 minutes.

Youll still hit your goal for the day, and your Apple Watch will record it accordingly. Adding workouts in your Watch and in your iPhones Health app can also help you fake your Stand goal if you want to do that too. As will holding up your arm for a minute at a time.

If you want to increase your Exercise and Stand goals, youll have to keep track of that yourself. You can make an Excel document or Google Sheet with the data from your Activity History for this. And you can enjoy your Apple Watch giving you additional rewards for exceeding the baseline a lot of the time!

To change your Move goal, though, just open the Activity app on your Apple Watch.

Once youre in the app press and hold anywhere on the screen. Youll have to press pretty hard, but when you do your screen will shift, sending the Activity rings backward.

Tracking Heart Rate With Apple Watch

How to Change Activity Goals (Move, Exercise, Standard) on Apple Watch 5, 6

Within the Apple Watch companion app on your iPhone, you can opt in or out of the Apple Watch tracking your heartbeat within the Privacy section. If you opt in, the Apple Watch will track your current heart rate and monitor for issues, but it will also feedback data on how it’s changing as you are doing exercise.

You can also access your heart rate data with the dedicated Heart Rate app on the Apple Watch. It will allow you to take your heart rate reading at any time, but also works in the background to monitor your resting heart rate and walking average. The Apple Health app on the iPhone allows you to delve deeper into the data.

I Want To Share My Activity With My Friends Is That Possible

Yes! All you need to do is open the Activity App and tap on the Sharing tab in the lower right-hand corner. Tap on the + icon and type in the contact of the friends youd like to share your activity with. Tap Send in the upper right-hand corner.

Your friend will receive a message that youd like to share your activity and they can choose to accept it. This is the perfect solution for those who want to work out with others or have an accountability buddy to help them get healthier.

Customize Which Apps Appear In Your Dock

If you have a lot of apps installed on your Apple Watch, it can be difficult to find the right ones when you need them. That’s where the Apple Watch’s dock comes in handy. If you’re not familiar, the dock is essentially the iPhone’s app switcher, but for the Apple Watch. You can trigger it by tapping the side button, which pulls up a carousel of recently used apps.

However, you can also customize the dock to show any apps you want instead of your most recent apps. To do this on your watch, open the Settings menu, tap Dock and select the Favorites option. But I recommend setting this up in the Phone’s Watch app instead so that you can customize these apps.

Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap Dock. Once the Favorites option is selected, you’ll see a list of apps divided into two sections: Favorites and Do Not Include. Favorites are the apps that are currently in your dock, while the latter lists all of the other apps on your watch that aren’t included. Tap the Edit button in the top right corner to customize the Favorites list to your liking.

Adjust All Of Your Activity Goals

With the release of WatchOS 7 in 2020, Apple added the option to change your goals for the amount of time you stand and exercise. Previously, you could only change your Move goal.

So instead of using the defaults — 30 minutes of exercise and a cumulative 12 standing hours a day — you can change either one to fit your actual daily routine.

This small change will make it possible for you to hit your own targets when you actually start your day, not when Apple tells you to. For example, if you use sleep tracking overnight and need to charge your watch more often in the morning, you won’t feel like you’ve lost an hour of time needed to close those rings.

Open the Activity app on your watch, scroll to the bottom and tap Change Goals. Make your adjustments for all three metrics and start closing those rings.

You now have full control over what it takes to close your activity rings.
