Use The Find My App To Locate A Missing Device Or Item

Learn the different ways you can use the Find My app to help find your missing device or personal item, like how to see its location on a map or mark it as lost.

If you’ve lost or misplaced an Apple device or personal item, just use the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS or a Mac with the latest version of macOS signed in with the same Apple ID. You can also use the Find Devices or Find Items apps on your Apple Watch with the latest version of watchOS.

For a misplaced iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods product, or supported Beats product, you can also use the Find My app on a device owned by someone in your Family Sharing group, or sign in to iCloud.com/find on a web browser.

How To Protect Your Data If Your iPhone Is Offline

Let’s suppose that you still can’t find your device. You fear that someone has stolen it, or that whoever locates it could access your private information. What can you do to stop this from happening?

Even when Find My says your iPhone is “Offline,” you can still use some of its other functions. Most notably, Activation Lock comes standard when using Find My. This means that nobody can turn off Find My or erase your iPhone’s data without your Apple ID.

You also have two further options, detailed below. However, these modes only activate once your iPhone switches on and connects to the internet again.

Remove Your Missing Device From Your Account

If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, do not remove your lost iPhone from your account until your claim has been approved.

Go to appleid.apple.com to remove the missing device from your list of trusted devices.

The app will locate any nearby AirTags, and Android users will be able to cause the AirTag or Find My-enabled accessory to play a sound so it can be located. The app also provides instructions on how to disable an AirTag by removing the battery.

How To Add A Personal Item Or Third

Depending on what item you want to track, you have a couple of options for adding them to Find My. If you are attaching an AirTag to your bag or keys, for example, you’ll want to follow the steps below for tracking an item with an AirTag. For third-party devices that have Find My support built-in, you’ll want to adhere to the guidance further down on “other supported items.”

What Does Offline Mean For Find My iPhone

The main advice for anyone who has lost their phone is simply not to panic.

To locate your iPhone with Find My, you need to sign in to your iCloud account using a different device. There are numerous iterations of the Find My feature, including Find My iPad and Find My Apple Watch. All of these use iCloud.

You can also open the Find My app on another Apple device signed in to your account, if you own one.

If it’s working properly, you should see an icon on a map to show where your missing device is.

In some cases, however, it reads “Offline.” It may also say “No location available” or “Location Services Off.”

There are a few reasons for this, but they all have the same meaning: your iPhone cannot check in to Find My. It doesn’t have access to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

What Happens If You Turn On Lost Mode For Your Item

When you turn on Lost Mode for a personal item with an attached AirTag or a supported third-party product, you can share a message with your phone number or email address. If someone finds your AirTag, they can see the message by tapping and holding the top of their iPhone or NFC-capable smartphone to the AirTag to open found.apple.com. If someone finds your supported third-party product, they can open the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, choose the Items tab, tap Identify Found Item, and select the item from the list to see your message.

Help A Friend Find A Lost Device

To help a friend find a lost device, you can tap on the “Help a Friend” option under the “Me” tab. This opens up iCloud.com on the web, where a friend can sign into their account using iCloud. There is no option to sign out of Find My to let another person sign in like you could with Find MyiPhone.

How To Find A Lost iPhone iPad Or Apple Watch With Siri

For any of this to work, youll need to have enabled Find my iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch during setup. Assuming you did, heres how to find any of those devices using your voice, thanks to Siri.

To get the ball rolling, invoke Siri the way you normally would and then ask it to Find my x and replace x with the device for which youre looking.

Lost Mode lets you remotely lock your device and present a custom message on the screen. You should include a means of contacting you to return the smartphone.

As an extra layer of security, this disables Apple Pay. Plus, notifications won’t show up, so no one can snoop on your activities. You can still receive calls and FaceTime calls, so you can still get someone to call your device to try to retrieve it fortunately, whoever potentially has it won’t be able to access anything else beyond answering.

Tracking Devices That Have Been Erased

If someone steals your iPhone and then erases it, in iOS 15, it’s still going to show up in the Find My app, and it will be trackable even after it’s been wiped.

The feature is tied to Activation Lock, which prevents someone from using your iPhone without your Apple ID and password. In iOS 14 and prior iOS updates, erasing a device would leave Activation Lock on so no one could use your iPhone without your password, but erasing a device did prevent Find My from functioning.

A wiped iPhone would not show up in the Find My app, but now, erasing an iPhone no longer works that way. If Activation Lock is on , it’s tied to your account and locatable using Find My. Combined with the feature for tracking a device that’s turned off, the Find My app serves as a much stronger theft deterrent.

To prevent someone from being tricked into purchasing a device that’s tied to your account, the Hello screen on a newly erased iPhone makes it clear that the device is locked, locatable using Find My, and the property of someone else.

Using The Icloud Website

1. In any web browser, open https://www.icloud.com/find. You’ll need to log in with your Apple ID and password, but Apple won’t ask you for a two-factor authentication code even if you have it enabled.

2. You should see a map with every device connected to your iCloud account. Above the map, click All Devices and then click the iPad you’ve lost to see where it’s located. If your iPad is connected to the internet, or on and nearby other Apple devices, you should see its exact location. If it’s not, you’ll see its “last known location.”

3. You can zoom in to get a better idea of where the iPad is located, and if you’re near enough, you can click Play Sound to make it ring. If it’s lost or stolen, you might want to click Lost Mode or erase it entirely.

Only erase the iPad if you think there’s no hope of getting it back, since this resets the iPad to factory settings and Find My won’t work anymore.

Quick note: You can use Find My to track iPads that aren’t connected to your iCloud account, too. To do this, you’ll need to add the owner to a Family Sharing plan.

Go to Find My > Items > Name of your AirTag > Find, and the app will try to connect to the AirTag.

Once this is done, it’ll prompt you with the direction and how far it is. Follow the arrow and the taps on your iPhone will get faster, the closer you get to the AirTag.
