How To Connect A Ps4 Controller To An iPhone Or iPad With Ios 13

Connecting a PS4 controller to your iPhone or iPad with iOS 13 is as simple as connecting any other Bluetooth device, and involves putting the pad into pairing mode. From there the pad can detect it and connect to your device.
Once it’s connected you should be able to play any game that supports external MFi controllers. Although it doesn’t look like all PlayStation’s usual pad features are supported, as the tweet below suggest.
The DualShock 4 is already working in iOS 13 beta 1, works like other MFi controller. Means you can remote play your PS4, but option, share, ps button and the touchpad wont work. pic.twitter.com/6PbWukhaF5
That’s likely because non-functioning buttons don’t have a matching counterpoint in iOS. Further updates might add them in but that might require Sony to allow or enable it.
Ensure Your iPhone Or iPad Is On Ios 13/ iPad Os
First off, youll want to make sure that youve downloaded and updated to iOS 13 or iPad OS. This is available for most Apple devices right now, and makes connecting any bluetooth controller to your device much easier.
To update to iOS 13 or iPad OS, go to Settings, General, Software Update. Your device should then automatically find the most recent available update if there is one. If not, youre already on iOS 13 or iPad OS.
What If I Dont Have A Dualshock 4
Though the black version is often on sale for $39.99, the DualShock 4 is not a cheap controller, and if youd rather not shell out that up to $65 for mobile gaming, there are alternatives you can pick up today. Youll just need to make sure the controller you pick has the MFi branding and youll be good to go.
If you can spare around $30, its easy to pick one up. We recommend the SteelSeries Nimbus since it has great battery life and is designed to work with all iOS devices around, including your iPad. This is a good-looking controller, with its gunmetal-gray plastic and metal finish one of the best weve seen out there.
SteelSeries typically makes accessories for PC gaming, so you shouldnt be surprised that this gamepad works great for any iOS device you have around, and it a great choice if youre looking for something to play through your Steam library with. Everything on this controllerfrom the buttons to the joysticks to the D-padfeels great, built for precision in any kind of game.
The controller is big, measuring in similar size and style to the DualShock 4 controller, complete with an identical thumbstick layout. The device uses Lightning to charge too, which could be a benefit to some and a hindrance to others, but its worth noting the battery life is more than solid, promising over 40 hours of gameplay between batteries.

How To Connect Your Ps4 Controller To An iPhone
If you game on the go but want more control over the experience than you can get with your phones touchscreen, youre in luck. iOS 13 lets you connect a Playstation controller to your iPhone via Bluetooth pairing.
While you can also do this with an iPad and some Xbox controllers, we’re focusing on how to pair your PS4 DualShock controller with your iPhone.
Here’s how to connect
Go to the Settings menu on your iPhone.
Tap “Bluetooth” to get into the Bluetooth menu. It might already be on, but if it isnt, turn it on now by clicking the toggle switch at the top of the screen. Itll be green when Bluetooth is turned on.
Keep the Bluetooth menu open so you can see when the controller shows up and pair it.
On your PS4 controller, press the Playstation and Share buttons at the same time. Hold them down until the light on your controller starts to flash.
You should see DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller pop up in the Bluetooth menu on your iPhone under other devices. Click that to pair your controller.
Your controller is paired when the light on the back stops blinking and turns a reddish pink color.
If you want to pair your PS4 controller with an iPad instead, follow the same steps.

How To Connect Ps4 Controller To An iPhone Or iPad
Confirm that your Apple device is updated to iOS 13/ iPadOS 13 or higher, or else the DualShock 4 won’t connect properly. Once it’s up to date, open up your Settings app and tap the Bluetooth menu option.
Grab your DualShock and press and hold the PS button and the Share button simultaneously.
Don’t let go of those buttons until the light on the back of the controller starts double-blinking then pausing at regular intervals. This should only take about five seconds. If you let go early, the controller will blink slowly without pausing, but your iPhone or iPad will not detect it.
Once the controller starts flashing, check the iOS/ iPadOS Bluetooth Settings menu under ‘Other Devices’. ‘DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller’ should immediately appear once the controller enters pairing mode.
Tap the DUALSHOCK option, and the controller should connect and appear in ‘My Devices’ in just a few seconds. Once it’s synced, the controller light will turn a solid pinkish red.
If the controller is blinking properly but failed to pair, you probably waited too long and the DualShock exited pairing mode. Press and hold the buttons again, then quickly tap the selection again under ‘Other Devices’. It should work this time.

The DualShock 4 is the fourth iteration of the DualShock line of controllers, and the first since the original to change up the design, while still holding onto what makes the controller recognizable to gamers everywhere.
Sony released the original PlayStation in 1994, bundled with the PlayStation Controller, complete with four directional buttons and four face buttons, but was missing the dual-analog sticks that are now commonplace on every gaming controller from the DualShock 4 to the Xbox Elite controller to the Switchs Pro Controller.
In 1997, three years later, Sony released the Dual Analog Controller but was pulled off the market by 1998 in favor of a refined version: the Dualshock. Now on its fourth iteration, the Dualshock 4 has proven to be one of the best controllers ever made by Sony.
Enter Pairing Mode On Your Ps4 Controller
First, if you’re not updated to iOS 13 yet, do so. Unlike Bluetooth 5.0 devices such as AirPods or certain Beats, you can’t merely locate your PS4 controller in your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and pair it. Instead, you need to tell your controller to enter pairing mode, which will allow iOS to discover it.
To enter pairing mode, hold down the PlayStation button and the Share button until you see the light bar start repeatedly flashing. That flashing indicates the controller is now in pairing mode, ready to connect to any compatible devices via Bluetooth.

Boot Up A Compatible Game
All that’s left to do is to start playing a compatible game. There’s no need to pair within the game if it supports MFi controllers, your PS4 controller will work right away. It’s pretty great starting up, say, GTA Vice City, and immediately controlling the game with your DualShock 4 Wireless Controller.

Note: While all MFi-compatible games will work with your PS4 gamepad, you might run into some hiccups if a developer hasn’t optimized their games for iOS 13 yet.
Turn On Bluetooth On Your Apple Device
Another pretty obvious step, this one. You’ll need to make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone or iPad in order for it to find your PS4 controller. You can do this in one of two ways:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center and tap the Bluetooth icon to enable it
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle it on with the switch

Dualshock 4 Bluetooth Troubleshooting
If your phone consistently cannot detect the DualShock 4, try plugging it in for a few minutes before attempting to pair it again. The controller may be struggling to connect because it doesn’t have the necessary juice.
If all else fails, there could be an issue with the controller’s firmware. Use a paper clip and insert it into the small hole on the back of the controller, to the bottom-left of the L2 trigger. Hold it down for about five seconds, and the controller will be factory reset, making it more likely to pair properly.
If you’re using an Android phone running 9.0 or earlier, or don’t want to use Bluetooth, your only option is a wired connection. You’ll need your DualShock 4 charging cable and an adapter that will let you plug the USB end into your phone. For Android, that’s a USB-C male to USB female adapter for iPhones, that’s a Lightning male to USB female adapter.

Disconnect The Controller From Your Devices
When youve finished playing games on your devices with the PS4 controller, you might want to disconnect the controller and pair it back to your console.
- On your Android or iOS device, open the Bluetooth option in the Settings app. Then tap and hold on the PS4 controller in the devices list and select Disconnect followed by Forget.
- Your controller will disconnect from your devices and will be ready to pair with your console. Plug in the controller to the console using a USB cable and press the PS button.

Open up Settings. The steps here may vary from phone to phone, but on stock Android, you must choose Connected devices > + Pair new device.

As we mentioned before, you must hold these until the back LED lights up in a double-blink pattern don’t release the buttons early, or your phone won’t be able to detect it.
