Why Would You Want To Forget An iPhone Network

You may want to forget a network on your iPhone for numerous reasons. One of the most common is that the Internet doesnt work. In such a case, disconnecting and reconnecting may fix this problem.

If youve switched your Wi-Fi provider or are about to upgrade your router, you may also want to forget your current network before these changes take effect. The same is true if youre moving out of the area, wont be returning, and wont be keeping your existing Internet services.

Some users may also want to forget a Wi-Fi network for security reasons. Some public networks threaten privacy and security, and the chances of something going wrong increase if your iPhone automatically connects without you knowing.

Posted onMarch 30th, 2021 byKirk McElhearn

If you travel regularly with your Mac or iOS device, you likely find yourself connecting to new Wi-Fi networks: at airports, in train stations, in hotels, restaurants, pubs, or at clients offices. Whether you connect to these networks with your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, miraculously, your devices will remember these networks and sync them via iCloud so your other Apple products can access them too, if you use iCloud Keychain.

Your Apple devices ability to remember previously connected to networks can be both good and bad. While it means you dont have to search for or remember login credentials when you connect to a known Wi-Fi network on a different device, it can lead to a surfeit of Wi-Fi networks stored in your keychain and potentially allow you to unknowingly connect to a Wi-Fi network that might not be secure. You can cull these Wi-Fi networks, but you can only really clean them out on a Mac.

In this article, Ill show you how to remove these Wi-Fi networks so your Macs and iOS devices forget them.

iPhone & iPad: How to forget wireless networks

For some connected wi-fi networks, when I tap the blue I or the name in Wi-Fi settings on my iPhone running iOS 14.1, I dont see Forget this network on the page that appears. Is there a way for me to override whatever is preventing that directive from being displayed on that networks blue I page?

You cannot forget a network you have never joined. Most of the networks I can see right now have no forget option for that reason.

Do you see networks that you have used but cannot forget?

Another reason is the it might be a part of a profile. So to get rid of the remembered password you have to remove the profile. Tread carefully as the profile may have other things. Like bits needed to allow the device to be used inside of a company setup or similar.

For my latest case, I hadnt intended to join the network. It was apparently an unrestricted network and didnt require a password, so when I discovered that I was connected to it, I assumed I had mistakenly tapped to join. The only way I could find to disconnect was to turn off connect automatically, then bounce Wi-Fi. Maybe theres a setting to prevent connecting to such a network with a single tap, but I dont know where it is.

The Trick To Get Back Forget My Network

Despite Apple not yet fixing this weird bug some iPhone and iPad users sporadically get, there is, fortunately, a very easy fix. First, youre going to head into Settings and then tap Wi-Fi.

If youre already connected to Wi-Fi or just have it on, switch it off to disable Wi-Fi entirely. Wait about five seconds to ensure its fully disabled, then switch Wi-Fi back on again.

Scroll down all the way to the bottom of the list of available Wi-Fi networks. Instead of choosing the network your iOS device doesnt seem to want to shake off, youre going to tap Other instead.

Here, you have to enter in the network and password manually as well as choose the type of security. First enter the network name, which is the exact same as the name youre used to tapping to connect automatically.

    Note:

If you were connected to a network without a password, then you should already be done. Just tap Join at the top right to reconnect to the network. If you did have a password, first select the type of security.

Most modern protected Wi-Fi networks use WPA2 for security so try that one out first. If not, you can either check the back of your router to find the security type usually listed alongside the password. Or if you dont have access to the router, just keep going with trial and error until you connect successfully.

Once you select the security type, enter in your password and tap Join.
