What About The Mini And Max

iPhone 12 mini – Long Term Review (A Few Months Later)

Though I’m currently using the iPhone 12 as my daily driver, it’s the iPhone 12 mini that I’m looking forward to, and knowing that all the same amazing features from the iPhone 12 are packed into this smaller body gives me all the feels.

Imagine it: The same edge-to-edge screen, the same TrueDepth Camera, the same wide and ultra-wide angle lenses with Night Mode and Deep Fusion and the A14 processor and support for Dolby Vision recording … everything! All packed into a phone that, hopefully, I can easily use one-handed. I know it’s not as small as the 4-inch iPhone, but it’s as close as we’re ever going to get and I can’t wait for it.

If you’re all about the biggest phone ever, you definitely want to wait for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Not only is the screen the largest of any iPhone ever at 6.7-inches, but the Max has a 47% larger wide-angle sensor for an impressive increase in low-light photography and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. It also has a longer battery life at an estimated 20 hours of video playback and 80 hours of audio playback.

Both the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Max will go on sale on November 6 with an estimated shipping date of November 13

When Is iPhone 12 Coming Out

Earlier this year Apple confirmed its next iPhones will arrive a few weeks later than usual, but as we hit September, there’s still a larger question as to when exactly that will be.

In previous years, Apple had typically already provided a date for its new iPhone reveal by September, but 2020 certainly isn’t a normal year. We’ve got very few hard facts as to when Apple will unveil its next set of devices, but there are certainly rumours.

Right now there are two popular theories for when Apple could reveal the iPhone 12.

The first is September 10, which would likely be September 11 locally. managed to snap a screenshot of what appeared to be an event scheduled for September 10 on Apple’s YouTube account. September 10 is however also the same day Apple had its iPhone event last year, and as such, potentially just a placeholder. September 10 is also a Thursday in the US, which is unusual for Apple events. They tend to either take place on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

The other popular theory is mid-to-late October. This would mean Apple could announce the iPhone 12 and start taking pre-orders the same week, as is tradition. Leaker Jon Prosser has claimed that Apple will reveal the iPhone 12 in the week starting October 12, with pre-orders taking place shortly after. He claims that iPhone 12 Pro devices won’t be available until November, however. Japanese Apple rumours website Mac Otakara also believes Apple will hold its event in October.

So The iPhone 12 Sounds Exciting Should You Buy One

As a tech reviewer for longer than a decade, I love getting to play with the latest gadgets. But phones have gotten good enough that you don’t need to upgrade as often as you used to. Apple has done an incredible job keeping older phones snappy and up-to-date with the latest software . So I usually recommend holding onto your devices as long as possible your wallet will thank you, and so will the environment.

But no phone lasts forever.

Maybe your current iPhone is feeling long in the tooth, or you’re weighing the decision to repair the phone you have vs upgrading it. Here are some ballpark recommendations to help steer your iPhone 12 deliberation:

If you have an iPhone X, iPhone 11 or other new-ish device, I wouldn’t recommend upgrading. Those iPhones are still fantastic, providing high-quality cameras, speedy performance and modern software. As much as Apple would like you to think the iPhone 12 would be a revolutionary life change just like last year’s model and the year’s before that upgrading from a recent iPhone is going to offer incremental improvements in the grand scheme of things. That probably isn’t worth $700 to $1,100. Even if your phone needs repairs, it’ll be a fraction of that cost, so don’t let FOMO get the better of you. Your phone is still great.

iPhone 1: Rumors And Launch Date

Is iPhone 12 coming out? When can we expect this?

True to form, Apple has thus far stayed mum on when we might expect the iPhone 13 to make its debut. But the rumor mill is that The Fruit will continue the 4-model suite offering that it introduced in 2020, to include an iPhone 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max in addition to the base model iPhone 13.

Based on past years, we expect to see the iPhone 13 announcement sometime in September 2021, with preorders through major carriers beginning within a few days to a week afterward. In fact, recent leaks have narrowed down the iPhone 13 release date to September 14, 2021.

For now, Apple aficionados have the iPhone 12 series to enjoy: the four new versions of the iPhone 12 improve on previous iPhone models in every conceivable way, from their attractive and durable designs to their next-level photo and video-taking capabilities. It’s fair to say that the iPhone 12 is an instant “best-in-class” device.

iPhone 13 Pricing And Release

Apple will likely release four distinct models of the “iPhone 13” identically priced to the iPhone 12 counterparts. Reports suggest that demand for the iPhone 12 mini may lead to Apple de-emphasizing the product, but an “iPhone 13 mini” is still expected.

Apple may give users different choices over storage options. Currently, there are three options in the non-pro lineup at 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The 128GB option is $50 more expensive than the 64GB option, and the 256GB option is $100 more expensive than that.

Apple could push the baseline to 128GB and offer 256GB and 512GB options above that. The pro models may get 1TB options for even more money likely a $200 premium.

The iPhone 12 starts at $799 so the “iPhone 13” will take its place. See the price chart below for current iPhone pricing or check our price guide.

Apple is expected to announce the “iPhone 13” in September. Rumors suggest it could be announced on September 14 and release by September 24.

They Will Probably Be Around The Same Price As Last Year’s iPhone 11 Pro And iPhone 11 Pro Max

The introduction of 5G doesn’t necessarily mean we should expect a price increase in the next iPhone. Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives said he expects Apple to keep the pricing for its iPhone 12 Pro models the same as that of last year’s iPhones. That’s particularly noteworthy considering early 5G phone models, especially premium devices, are usually more expensive than non-5G variants.

“Price points will be aggressive as Apple goes after their broader customer base,” Ives said in a previous interview with Business Insider. “Especially in a recession, in a COVID-19 backdrop, they need to make sure they’re hitting all price categories.”

iPhone 12 Review: What About The iPhone 13

As we approach September, all eyes are on the upcoming iPhone 13. We expect several key upgrades, like a smaller notch, 120Hz displays on the Pro models, enhancements to the ultrawide lenses, and bigger batteries across the board. Plus, the 5G might be better, too.

Rumors suggest that Apple is keeping the quad-model setup with the iPhone 13. That means we expect an iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 might just be an iterative upgrade over the iPhone 12, though we’d be happy with better battery life.

Should You Buy An iPhone 12

iPhone 12 – Unboxing, Setup and First Look

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are part of Apple’s latest generation of smartphones, offering OLED displays, 5G connectivity, the A14 chip for better performance, improved cameras, and MagSafe, all in a new, squared-off design.

Announced in October of 2020, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are still among the latest iPhones in Apple’s lineup, but they are almost at the end of their product cycle. Apple tends to release new iPhone models every September, and despite the iPhone 12 and 12 mini launching a month later than usual in 2020, it looks as though new iPhone 13 models are going to launch as normal this month.

There are clear signs of an iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini arriving as soon as next week with a number of upgrades and improvements, with Apple hosting a digital event on Tuesday, September 14. All customers should now wait until new models likely arrive next week. Due to how close the launch of new models now is, even those who are in clear need of a replacement device immediately should still wait for the “iPhone 13 mini” and “iPhone 13.”

While the iPhone 12 seems to be the best all-round iPhone option currently available, users who need pro-level camera features or want a more premium design should opt for the $999 iPhone 12 Pro. Similarly, for the largest and most fully-featured iPhone, there is the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, which dwarfs the iPhone 12 by over half an inch and starts at $1,099.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Display

There are three key changes to the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 13 Pro Max that are worth discussing: the smaller notch, a screen that refreshes at up to 120Hz and improved brightness when frolicking outdoors in the sunny sunshine.

The reduced size of the notch is the most obvious of the three, and while its welcome it doesnt really change a lot in terms of the iPhone design theres still a notch encroaching on your movies and games, where other brands are playing with smaller punch-holes and even completely invisible cameras.

That said, were not saying the notch is without its merits when you find that youre able to unlock your phone with your face from a surprising angle , you can forgive the need for multiple sensors to be wedged in at the top of the screen.

Wed like to see Apple miniaturize this a little more though, and get the cameras and sensors into the rim of the phone or at least let us see the battery percentage shown constantly, rather than having to swipe down. When we heard word of a smaller notch coming, we had hoped that the little beacon of battery life would be a constant option, but sadly no.

Apples 120Hz display technology is called ProMotion, and has been used on the iPad Pro range for years. Its surprising that its taken this long to appear on an iPhone, simply because the technology clearly exists within Apple, and because most rivals have had it on flagship and even some mid-range phones for a while now.

Following In The iPhone 11’s Footsteps:

An entire year ago when the iPhone 12 was released , we saw Apple announce that both the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR would see their prices drastically fall.

Apple started selling both handsets at over $100/£100 less than their original price. This then obviously spread out to other retailers and now the most you’ll ever pay for a brand new iPhone 11 is $599/£599.

The same thing happened to the iPhone XR when the iPhone 11 launched, bringing its price down considerably. While it isn’t a guarantee, it seems highly likely Apple will repeat this behaviour.

This could mean we see both the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 come down in price, offering a much cheaper alternative to the soon-to-be-released iPhone 13.

In the UK? You can already get a discount on the iPhone 12 and 12 miniWhile we haven’t yet seen Apple directly bring its prices down, a number of retailers in the UK have been offering big discounts on both the iPhone 12 and 12 mini for a while now. Both Amazon and Very consistently offer up to £120 off the handsets – roughly what we would imagine Apple will discount them too.Apple iPhone 12 mini:Very /

When Do iPhone Prices Drop

We know based on past experience that Apple is very unlikely to drop the price in the first year of sales. In fact the company is highly likely to reduce the price of the iPhone 12 series when the iPhone 13 is introduced, so if you are really after a bargain it might be wise to choose the older iPhone.

The earliest you could expect to get a discount on the new iPhone is around Black Friday at the end of November, so you might be planning to hold out until then. However, in 2020 we didn’t see any iPhone 12 deals over Black Friday.

Nor should you expect to get a discount from Apple on Black Friday. Apple’s Black Friday sale usually only takes the form of vouchers with select product purchases, rather than a discount, and it is unlikely that the newest iPhone would qualify as previous year’s new iPhones haven’t been included.

You may be able to find a Black Friday deal somewhere else though, although these deals are again likely to be for the older iPhone models. Interestingly though shopping events like Black Friday gets all the attention, that’s not the only time you can get discounts on Apple products: we see discounts all the time. We recommend you read out Best iPhone deals round up if you want to get money off an iPhone.

Don’t expect every sale to include the new iPhones, we find that more often the deals are on the older handsets.

iPhone 12 Review: Storage Options

iPhone 12 Release Date, Features, Price & More [Apple Updates]

The iPhone 12 starts with 64GB of storage and doubles in size with each upgrade. It’s $50 more to go to 128GB and $100 more than that to go to 256GB. You’re capped out at 256GB.

I used to say that no one needs more than 64GB of storage what with all the ways we can store our stuff in various cloud-based services, but after asking around, I realize I’m the exception, not the rule. A lot of people either come right up to the line of 64GB or even go over it.

So yes, I think the iPhone 12 should have started at 128GB and go all the way up to 512GB, just like the iPhone 12 Pro. When you consider the fact that the iPhone 12 is practically identical to the iPhone 12 Pro in almost every way, it just makes sense that you should have the same storage options, as well.

I realize that Apple is trying to keep the price of the iPhone 12 as low as possible, but storage gets less expensive every year, and I think doubling the storage and keeping the $799 price tag wouldn’t have been that difficult to do. Here’s hoping for a nice storage boost next year.

In case you’re wondering, I sit solidly at 50GB of used up storage on my iPhone.

iPhone 12 Review: Verdict

Im of two minds about the iPhone 12. Theres no question this is a great phone overall, and many of the changes Apple has made to its most popular iPhone are for the better. The new Super Retina XDR panel is a phenomenal improvement over the disappointing LCD panels in previous models at this price, even if it lacks a high refresh rate. And the fresh new design, MagSafe system and excellent dual-camera system all earn the iPhone 12 high marks.

But Apples resistance to change in key areas is still disappointing. Practically every major phone maker has stopped being stingy with base storage. The fact the iPhone 12 still only starts with 64GB is borderline criminal. Equally frustrating, Apple has stopped including a charger, although Samsung does the same thing with the Galaxy S21.

Some may want to wait for the iPhone 13 this fall. The new iPhone promises even faster performance, better cameras, Touch ID in the display, a smaller notch and 120Hz displays . But nine months after its arrival, the iPhone 12 is still very much worth buying.

iPhone 1: Reasons You Should Still Buy

These arguments were more compelling before Apple scheduled a Sept. 14 product event where it’s likely to announce new iPhones. Even then, you’d figure that it will keep at least one iPhone 12 model around at a lower price. So consider these arguments for adopting Apple’s older phone, whether it’s now or after the iPhone 13 shows up.

Same sizes: From what we’ve heard, the iPhone 13 will be available in the same sizes as the iPhone 12. That would include a 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini , a 6.1-inch standard iPhone 13, a 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro with a few extra features, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max at the top of the range.

What size works best for you depends on your exact needs as well as what will fit best in your hand, pocket or bag, but it’s not a reason to pick the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 over the other.

Lower prices are coming on iPhone 12 lineup: Apple typically reduces the price of the previous generation iPhones as soon as the new models are announced. We expect that the iPhone 12 will cost $599 after the iPhone 13 is introduced, which would be $200 less. It’s hard to say what the other iPhone 12 models will cost or even if Apple will continue to sell those models, but we’d anticipate a substantial reduction across the board.
