iPhone 12 Review: Magsafe
While the miracle of magnets continues to baffle the worlds top minds, Apple has made them a fundamental aspect of the iPhone 12s design. A ring of magnets centrally placed on the back of the iPhone 12 enable Apples new MagSafe ecosystem of accessories, from wireless chargers to cases and wallet attachments that simply snap on and off.
Theres nothing inherently unique about Apples brand of wireless charging here. The companys own $30 MagSafe charging puck uses the very same Qi standard as any other wireless charger for any other phone it just incorporates magnets, too. Your iPhone 12 will still be compatible with whatever wireless chargers or Qi accessories you already have, though to get those peak 15-watt speeds, you’ll need a first- or third-party solution that incorporates MagSafe.
The bad news is that MagSafe is slower than Apple’s 20W wired charger. Much slower. In a third-party charging test, the iPhone 12 charges to 50% full in 28 minutes using the 20W fast charger. The 15W MagSafe charger took an hour.
Still, thats not to discredit the philosophy behind MagSafe, which makes a lot of sense. The magnets help localize the iPhone 12 on chargers and makes accessory attachment more convenient. And its surely easier to top off your phone by setting it down a puck that instantly aligns itself perfectly, rather than fumbling around at your bedside to plug in a tiny Lightning connector.
iPhone 12 Review: Performance
Armed with the first 5-nanometer processor ever embedded in a smartphone Apples new A14 Bionic the iPhone 12 delivers best-in-class performance that never wavers. The A13 Bionic chip in the iPhone 11 series was already faster than Qualcomms top-tier 2020 silicon, the Snapdragon 865 Plus, but the A14 extends that gap further still. Now that it’s 2021, however, we’re starting to see more Snapdragon 888 phones, including the Galaxy S21 series.
Most phones need about a minute or more to complete our video encoding test, where a short 4K video is transcoded to 1080p using Adobes Premiere Rush app. The iPhone 11 Pro needed 46 seconds to complete this task the 888-equipped Galaxy S21 Ultra, 1 minute and 2 seconds. The iPhone 12, though? Just 26 seconds.
The Geekbench 5 test, which measures overall system performance, shows a similar advantage for Apples newest CPU. Here, the iPhone 12 set a blistering pace with a score of 3,859 in the multicore portion of the benchmark. The Galaxy S21 Ultra garnered 3,440 points.
And Apple hasnt skimped on the graphics side of things, either. Apple says the GPU inside the A14 Bionic is 50% faster than the one in the A13. While the latest mobile games dont always take full advantage of phone makers rapid innovation, I can say that Asphalt 9 Legends a game that can occasionally be chuggy on some higher-end Android phones felt smooth and sharp on the iPhone 12.

Truedepth Camera And Face Id
For biometric authentication, the iPhone 12 and 12 mini use Face ID, the facial recognition system that was first introduced in 2017. Face ID components are housed in the TrueDepth camera system in the display notch.
Face ID is used across iOS tasks for unlocking the iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming app purchases, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.
Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras. A Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin to create a 3D facial scan that maps the curves and planes of each face, with the scan read by an infrared camera.
The facial depth map is relayed to the A14 chip where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to authenticate identity. Face ID works in low light and in the dark, and with hats, beards, glasses, sunglasses, scarves, and other accessories that partially obscure the face.
Face ID data is stored in the Secure Enclave, and it is not accessible to Apple, third-party apps, or anyone who has your phone. Authentication happens on-device and no Face ID data is uploaded to Apple.

When Will 5g Make A Difference
A quick history lesson may provide some perspective. When 4G LTE phones and services were launched about a decade ago, nobody knew about ride-hailing services like Lyft or Uber, or travel apps like Airbnb because they didnt exist yet. Oh, and Netflix? That was the company that mailed you DVDs or, if you were really cutting-edge, BluRay discs.
So, eventually, the argument goes, we should expect to see new kinds of impactful, society-changing applications for 5G that these have represented on 4G for the last five to seven years.
There is an important twist to 5G that is entirely new versus 4G, but its not necessarily a positive one. 5G can be really confusing. Unlike 4G, which was essentially a single thing, 5G comes in multiple flavors with multiple different capabilities, and that brings us back to the iPhone 12.

Unlocking Face Id iPhones With Apple Watch
The iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4 updates introduced an “Unlock with Apple Watch” feature that’s designed to allow an iPhone with Face ID to use an unlocked and authenticated Apple Watch as a secondary authentication measure when a mask is worn.
Face ID is not able to work when a person is wearing a mask, so the Apple Watch authentication method prevents iPhone users from having to constantly enter a passcode when wearing a mask. It’s similar to the Apple Watch unlocking feature on the Mac and can be enabled in the Settings app under Face ID & Passcode.
An unlocked Apple Watch paired with Face ID can unlock the iPhone when a mask is worn, but it’s only for mask usage. The Apple Watch cannot be used to authenticate Apple Pay or App Store purchases, nor can it be used to unlock apps that require a Face ID scan. In these situations, the mask needs to be removed or a passcode/password needs to be used instead.
When the Apple Watch unlocks the iPhone, there’s a haptic tap on the wrist and with the iPhone sending a notification to the watch, much like how it works when using the watch to unlock a Mac. Unlock with Apple Watch is limited to those running iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4 or later.

From the Voice & Data menu, you’ll see three options: 5G On, 5G Auto, and LTE. 5G Auto, the default setting, uses 5G only when 5G won’t significantly reduce battery life.
This appears to be Apple’s Data Saver Mode that’s meant to swap the iPhone’s connection to LTE when 5G speeds aren’t necessary. For example, when the iPhone is updating in the background, it uses LTE because super fast speeds aren’t necessary, but in instances where speed does matter, such as downloading a show, the iPhone 12 models will swap over to 5G.
5G On ensures that 5G is activated all the time when a 5G network is available, and LTE disables 5G all together and lets you use an LTE connection instead of a 5G connection.

Apple and your wireless carrier regularly push carrier settings updates to maintain and improve your iPhone’s connection to your carrier’s network. Most of the time, you’ll receive a pop-up on your iPhone when a carrier settings update is available.

The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999, while the 12 Pro Max retails for $1,099. Apple kept the prices of its premium phones the same as last year’s models, despite packing in 5G connectivity and other improvements.
