From the iPhone 7 onwards, Apple has made iPhones at least a little water resistant. Here’s exactly how resistant your phone is, and what Apple’s claims really mean.
Apple’s advertising cheerily shows people spilling drinks over their iPhones and not flinching. In reality, flinch. While iPhones since late 2016 have offered some protection against water damage, it’s nowhere near enough to mean you can go swimming with one.
Water resistance is brilliant. It is a tremendous thing that Apple has managed to pull off for every phone since the iPhone 7. But if there’s one thing that water resistance is not, it’s water proof.
What we have now is the ability to probably survive a dunking, no more. And if that means no more burying your iPhone in rice as you cross your fingers it’ll dry out, it does also mean that the phones are splash resistant.
Except just as you’re starting to relax about the odd time some knocked wine over the table, there is also this warning from Apple.
“Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear,” says Apple in a support document. It’s the support document people search for in a panic when the rice isn’t working, and that warning doesn’t console them.
Is The iPhone 11 Pro Max Waterproof
The iPhone 11 Pro Max like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529. What does this mean? It means it can withstand being submerged underwater for up to 30 minutes.
This means, should you drop your iPhone 11 Pro Max in the pool or the bath, you can technically leave it for 30 minutes and itll still work just fine.

I would, however, always proceed with caution. Apple has gotten itself into hot water a few times about its claims over just how waterproof the iPhone 11 actually is.

As for using the phone in the pool, the same concept applies. If the phone falls into the water, it might survive a quick dip if the pool isn’t too deep. You should not try to take underwater photos. Sure, you might succeed without damaging your phone, but is it worth the risk? If you want to take underwater shots, invest in a waterproof phone case designed for that purpose.
Note: saltwater is even more damaging due to its corrosive and conductive nature. Dropping a device in the ocean is more dangerous than dropping it in the pool.

So Is The iPhone 11 Waterproof
Short answer: No
Technically, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max are not waterproof, but they are water-resistant. This means that they can be submerged in water for a certain period of time and at a certain depth.
The iPhone 11 features an IP68 rating, which means it can survive in water for 30 minutes if the depth is below 6.5 feet. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are the same, but the depth is deeper at 13 feet. In case you were wondering, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max all have a water resistance rating of IP68, the same as the previous iPhone XS and XS Max. This means that they can withstand a 30-minute exposure in a little more than six feet of fresh water.
Now, you might think that if your phone can be underwater for a half hour, you don’t have much to worry about from a bit of rain or a spilled glass of water. And you probably don’t, in fact, but it’s better to play it safe. Apple’s warranty does not cover issues caused by water, so if your phone is damaged by water despite that water resistance, you’re left holding the bag, so to speak.
And over time, the water-resistant capabilities of your phone wear down. The rubber gaskets that seal out liquid at the lightning cable port, the SIM card slot, and around the buttons slowly degrade, losing water-blocking ability.
Also note that when we talk about water resistance, we’re talking about clean freshwater, as far as Apple is concerned. They make no claims about the phone’s resistance to damage caused by salt water or any other liquids, like coffee, motor oil, or Red Bull, to name a few of the fluids out there other than pure water.
What To Do If Your Phone Gets Wet
If your iPhone gets wet from water, turn it off and try to get it as dry as possible. If it gets wet from any liquid other than water, rinse your iPhone under clean water, then clean your iPhone off with a soft cloth and dry it as much as you can.
To dry your iPhone, tap it gently against your hand with the charging port facing down to remove excess liquid. You could also place your iPhone in front of a fan to help the drying process.
Dont dry your iPhone with an external heat source. And don’t stick a foreign component, such as a cotton swab or a paper towel, into the Lightning charging port.
Also, don’t disassemble the device yourself. Doing so may end up damaging the protective parts of the iPhone.
If the damage seems severe, take your iPhone to an expert for repairs.

Taking Apples iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro to extremes with an underwater drone.
The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro arent fully waterproof, but are water resistant enough to survive a splash of coffee or get dunked in the pool. But how much water can these phones really take? According to Apple, the iPhone 11 is rated IP68, which means its water resistant in up to 6.5 feet of water for 30 minutes. The more expensive iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are also IP68 but can go deeper: 13 feet for 30 minutes. Outside of the official ratings, we wanted to see how deep we could take these phones.
Teaming up with Sofar Ocean Technologies , we mounted a brand-new iPhone 11 and 11 Pro on its underwater drone, Trident. It can reach depths up to 328 feet and can be controlled from your phone. We sent the Trident deep down into Monterey Bay in California on a chilly fall day to see what would happen to the iPhones.
Taking the boat out into open water we plunged the Trident down 39 feet to the sea floor After waiting the full 30 minutes , we brought the drone back up to see if the phones survived this final swim. To our surprise, the phones were both completely fine
