From the iPhone 7 onwards, Apple has made iPhones at least a little water resistant. Here’s exactly how resistant your phone is, and what Apple’s claims really mean.

Apple’s advertising cheerily shows people spilling drinks over their iPhones and not flinching. In reality, flinch. While iPhones since late 2016 have offered some protection against water damage, it’s nowhere near enough to mean you can go swimming with one.

Water resistance is brilliant. It is a tremendous thing that Apple has managed to pull off for every phone since the iPhone 7. But if there’s one thing that water resistance is not, it’s water proof.

What we have now is the ability to probably survive a dunking, no more. And if that means no more burying your iPhone in rice as you cross your fingers it’ll dry out, it does also mean that the phones are splash resistant.

Except just as you’re starting to relax about the odd time some knocked wine over the table, there is also this warning from Apple.

“Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear,” says Apple in a support document. It’s the support document people search for in a panic when the rice isn’t working, and that warning doesn’t console them.

Is The iPhone 11 Pro Max Waterproof

The iPhone 11 Pro Max like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529. What does this mean? It means it can withstand being submerged underwater for up to 30 minutes.

This means, should you drop your iPhone 11 Pro Max in the pool or the bath, you can technically leave it for 30 minutes and itll still work just fine.

iPhone 11 is powered by the A13 Bionic chip to perform the most demanding tasks, while getting through an entire day on a single charge, and is designed to withstand the elements with improved water resistance.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max isnt just waterproof though, it is also dust resistant as well. With its IP68 rating, youre covered for the following:

  • Protected from total dust ingress
  • Protected from long term immersion up to a specified pressure

I would, however, always proceed with caution. Apple has gotten itself into hot water a few times about its claims over just how waterproof the iPhone 11 actually is.

In my experience, water is not your iPhones friend even if you have an IP68 rating.

Can I Use The iPhone 11 Underwater

As for using the phone in the pool, the same concept applies. If the phone falls into the water, it might survive a quick dip if the pool isn’t too deep. You should not try to take underwater photos. Sure, you might succeed without damaging your phone, but is it worth the risk? If you want to take underwater shots, invest in a waterproof phone case designed for that purpose.

Note: saltwater is even more damaging due to its corrosive and conductive nature. Dropping a device in the ocean is more dangerous than dropping it in the pool.

So Is The iPhone 11 Waterproof

Short answer: No

Technically, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max are not waterproof, but they are water-resistant. This means that they can be submerged in water for a certain period of time and at a certain depth.

The iPhone 11 features an IP68 rating, which means it can survive in water for 30 minutes if the depth is below 6.5 feet. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are the same, but the depth is deeper at 13 feet. So, for the most part, you should be good if you happen to drop your phone in the pool or bathtub, but it is best to retrieve it as soon as possible.

If you do drop your iPhone 11 into a pool or the ocean, make sure to clean it with freshwater and a lint-free cloth afterward. If you want to protect your phone even further, then it is best to look at the many waterproof cases available for the phone.

What do you think? Surprised that the phone from Apple can survive in water for up to 30 minutes? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our or .

Can iPhone 13 Take Pictures Under Water

While iPhone 13 models can handle submersion in 6-meter depths for 30 minutes, youll probably want to think twice before taking your phone unprotected on your next snorkeling venture.

Dont leave anything to chance. Make sure you seal off your iPhone 13 against moisture by investing in a waterproof case.

You might be OK with a simple plastic case in shallow water. Heavier-duty aluminum cases with a fully waterproof seal or mounting systems and lens attachments could be even better, depending on the type of photos you want to capture.

  • How do I make an iPhone waterproof?

If you have an older iPhone model than the iPhone 7, you can’t do much to waterproof your phone, as iPhones older than iPhone 7 aren’t water-resistant. Your best bet for protecting your device from moisture is to invest in a fully waterproof case and exercise caution around water.

  • How waterproof is the iPhone 6S?

Technically, iPhone 6S models aren’t waterproof or even water-resistant, which is one way the iPhone 6S differs from the iPhone 7. However, users who opened up the iPhone 6S found some waterproofing in the design. These traits became more refined and official with the iPhone 7.

Is The iPhone Xr Waterproof Or Water

Like the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 7, the iPhone XR comes standard with a bit of water resistance and lots of empty promises. Out of the box, it sports an IP67 water rating that, as far as we can tell, gets you one water interaction shortly after you unbox your new device. If any time has passed and you’ve, you know, used your phone at all, Apple says that the water resistance is not permanent and may wear away at any time. They do, however, add that the XR is resistant to soda, beer, coffee, tea, and juice spills, marking a new threshold for iPhone liquid interactions.

At Hitcase, we say that’s not good enough. Our phones aren’t meant to be set aside for a sunny day or only used in dry, comfortable environments such as exotic places like your living room or the office. Our cases can follow you to the ends of the earth, look great doing it, and, most importantly, keep your device safe and sound while you explore and document it all.

For the best in waterproof protection, there’s only one iPhone XR waterproof case to consider: the Hitcase Splash. With 10 feet of IP68 protection and head-height drop protection, the Hitcase Splash is the iPhone XR’s BFF and goes anywhere you and your phone go.

Who Has More Apps Apple Or Android

Apple has a commanding lead over all other smart phone platforms with 230,000 and counting in the App Store. But Google’s Android platform now claims 70,000. There may be a big difference between the two, but it’s not felt in all categories. In 10 of the most important app categories, iPhone and Android duke it out.

How Long Will An iPhone 11 Last

The iPhone 11 features a 3,110 mAh battery, which is higher capacity than the 2,942 mAh battery in the iPhone XR. Apple says that it lasts for up to 17 hours during video playback, up to 10 hours for streaming video playback, and up to 65 hours for audio playback.

The iPhone 11 Series And The iPhone Xs Series Are Slightly More Water

In case you were wondering, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max all have a water resistance rating of IP68, the same as the previous iPhone XS and XS Max. This means that they can withstand a 30-minute exposure in a little more than six feet of fresh water.

Now, you might think that if your phone can be underwater for a half hour, you don’t have much to worry about from a bit of rain or a spilled glass of water. And you probably don’t, in fact, but it’s better to play it safe. Apple’s warranty does not cover issues caused by water, so if your phone is damaged by water despite that water resistance, you’re left holding the bag, so to speak.

And over time, the water-resistant capabilities of your phone wear down. The rubber gaskets that seal out liquid at the lightning cable port, the SIM card slot, and around the buttons slowly degrade, losing water-blocking ability.

Also note that when we talk about water resistance, we’re talking about clean freshwater, as far as Apple is concerned. They make no claims about the phone’s resistance to damage caused by salt water or any other liquids, like coffee, motor oil, or Red Bull, to name a few of the fluids out there other than pure water.

What To Do If Your Phone Gets Wet

Best Waterproof Cases for the iPhone 11’s

If your iPhone gets wet from water, turn it off and try to get it as dry as possible. If it gets wet from any liquid other than water, rinse your iPhone under clean water, then clean your iPhone off with a soft cloth and dry it as much as you can.

To dry your iPhone, tap it gently against your hand with the charging port facing down to remove excess liquid. You could also place your iPhone in front of a fan to help the drying process.

Dont dry your iPhone with an external heat source. And don’t stick a foreign component, such as a cotton swab or a paper towel, into the Lightning charging port.

Also, don’t disassemble the device yourself. Doing so may end up damaging the protective parts of the iPhone.

If the damage seems severe, take your iPhone to an expert for repairs.

Waterproof iPhone 11 And 11 Pro Seem Able Withstand A Lot More Water Than Apple Says They Can

Taking Apples iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro to extremes with an underwater drone.

    Lexy Savvides for CNET:

The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro arent fully waterproof, but are water resistant enough to survive a splash of coffee or get dunked in the pool. But how much water can these phones really take? According to Apple, the iPhone 11 is rated IP68, which means its water resistant in up to 6.5 feet of water for 30 minutes. The more expensive iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are also IP68 but can go deeper: 13 feet for 30 minutes. Outside of the official ratings, we wanted to see how deep we could take these phones.

Teaming up with Sofar Ocean Technologies , we mounted a brand-new iPhone 11 and 11 Pro on its underwater drone, Trident. It can reach depths up to 328 feet and can be controlled from your phone. We sent the Trident deep down into Monterey Bay in California on a chilly fall day to see what would happen to the iPhones.

Taking the boat out into open water we plunged the Trident down 39 feet to the sea floor After waiting the full 30 minutes , we brought the drone back up to see if the phones survived this final swim. To our surprise, the phones were both completely fine

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, this is extreme and not covered under Apples stated water resistance limits for the iPhones. Do not try this at home without being ready and willing to lose your iPhone. That said, its totally like Apple, as with battery life, to underpromise and overdeliver!
