The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were the first iPhones rated as IP67, which means the phones are resistant to splashes and can be submerged in just over three feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes without damage. Subsequent iPhone models, including the 8, 8 Plus, X, and XR have the same IP67 rating.

It happens. You’d be surprised how many phones end up falling in the toilet! If this happens to an iPhone 7 and later model, your phone should be fine! Start by following regular iPhone cleaning instructions, but consider sanitizing it as well. Even if you recently cleaned and flushed, there could still be harmful bacteria. Here is a walkthrough of how to properly sanitize your iPhone.

iPhone 11 Is Recovered After Being Underwater For Six Months Handset Remains Largely Unscathed

Despite the fact that the iPhone 11 is IP68 certified and designed for a depth of two meters up to 30 minutes, there are always some miraculous tales where these smartphones survived for much longer. The latest one is how the 6.1-inch model was recovered from the bottom of a lake in British Columbia and continued to work after being submerged for six months.

The iPhone 11 Pro was launched in 2019 with IP68 rating for water and dust resistence. Apple also says that the iPhone 11 Pro can be completely submereged in water for 30 minutes, but advises users to never do that on purpose. However, in a rather unusual story, a Canadian woman, who dropped her iPhone 11 Pro in a freezing lake while fishing in Canada, retreieved the smartphone after a whole 30 days, to find it still working perfectly. Yes, you heard that right. The Apple iPhone 11 Pro survived 30 days completely submerged in deep waters and is still in working condition. A report in Canadas CTV News aired the story, showing Angie Carriere, who was able to retreive the smartphone after three whole attempts. Carriere had earlier given up on retrieving the smartphone, but said that she was determined to get back the photos on the smartphone, so decided to find it. Upon finding it, much to her surprise, Carriere booted the phone and everything worked as it should!

While this is quite impressive by any standard in terms of water resistance, Apple will not officially support the situation for liability reasons.

How Can You Take Pictures Underwater With Your iPhone

Ever since the release of the iPhone 7, theres been some confusion about whether you can take your iPhone underwater, and how deep. Some people say, the iPhone 7 has an IP67 rating, so you cant swim deeper than 1 meter , duh!

Okay And apparently not for longer than 30 minutes, but as we are all aware, the iPhone ages so, that means that an IP67 rating will not remain the same even after 3 to 4 years.

How To Know If Your iPhone Is Waterproof And What That Actually Means

From the iPhone 7 onwards, Apple has made iPhones at least a little water resistant. Here’s exactly how resistant your phone is, and what Apple’s claims really mean.

Apple’s advertising cheerily shows people spilling drinks over their iPhones and not flinching. In reality, flinch. While iPhones since late 2016 have offered some protection against water damage, it’s nowhere near enough to mean you can go swimming with one.

Water resistance is brilliant. It is a tremendous thing that Apple has managed to pull off for every phone since the iPhone 7. But if there’s one thing that water resistance is not, it’s water proof.

What we have now is the ability to probably survive a dunking, no more. And if that means no more burying your iPhone in rice as you cross your fingers it’ll dry out, it does also mean that the phones are splash resistant.

Except just as you’re starting to relax about the odd time some knocked wine over the table, there is also this warning from Apple.

“Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear,” says Apple in a support document. It’s the support document people search for in a panic when the rice isn’t working, and that warning doesn’t console them.

So if your best option is to never let that iPhone anywhere near water, the second best is to know your limits. Here’s what water situations each iPhone can theoretically take, at least the first time.

The Difference Between Waterproof & Water Resistant

Before I deep dive into answering your iPhone-specific questions, I’d like to answer an important question, “Is waterproof and water-resistant the same?” The short answer is no! If something is waterproof, that means that it is literally impervious to water. When something is water-resistant, that means that it can resist the penetration of water to some degree.

There are many different levels of water resistance you can find water resistance ratings explained thoroughly here. Keep in mind that regular wear and tear will make an iPhone less water-resistant. Plus, any existing cracks could lead to water damage if your iPhone is exposed to water or liquids of any kind.

How To Tell If Your iPhone Has Water Damage

All iPhones released since 2006 have a built-in Liquid Contact Indicator that will turn red when it comes into contact with water. This will let you know if water was able to get inside your iPhone. You can find the LCI inside the SIM card tray on newer iPhone models.

To access the Liquid Contact Indicator in an iPhone 11, open your SIM card tray using a paper clip or another long, pointy object. Then remove the tray and hold your iPhone at an angle under a light. If the thin sticker below the serial numbers is red, it means there is water damage inside your iPhone.

How To Protect iPhone 11 Series

The worst thing a person can do is to intentionally submerge their iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max in water. Apple recommends that complete submersion is to be avoided, as well as water-related activities like swimming, bathing, showering or any other high-velocity water scenarios, and steaming. Other no-nos include exposing the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max to extremely hot, cold, or humid temperatures, dropping it, or disassembling it. Other liquids that should be kept away from the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max include detergents, oils, solvents again if any of these fluids come in contact with the phone, simply rinse the area with tap water, and dry the iPhone by wiping it.

Tip : Use Distance To Focus

Because you wont be able to lock in your focus or exposure underwater, youll have to do your best to predict the conditions youll encounter below the surface. Before going under, lock your focus on the most distant object in your frame of view. This will give you the best chance of a sharp underwater image.

Can I Use The iPhone 11 Underwater

As for using the phone in the pool, the same concept applies. If the phone falls into the water, it might survive a quick dip if the pool isn’t too deep. You should not try to take underwater photos. Sure, you might succeed without damaging your phone, but is it worth the risk? If you want to take underwater shots, invest in a waterproof phone case designed for that purpose.

Note: saltwater is even more damaging due to its corrosive and conductive nature. Dropping a device in the ocean is more dangerous than dropping it in the pool.

Tip : If The Light Is Dim Shoot Toward The Surface

You cant predict the lighting conditions for underwater photography, but you can always assume that shooting toward the surface will give you the most light to work with. Youre also likely to get some interesting images when hints of the surface world are visible just above you.

After waiting for the phones to completely dry, it was time to see if there had been any additional damage after three days. I ran through the same tests again, checking the cameras, microphone, speaker and to see whether they would charge. I couldn’t quite believe the phones still looked like new and there was no visible external water damage. Everything still worked.

The only issue I could find was the speakers on both the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro sounded less crisp and slightly softer at maximum volume compared to two brand-new iPhones that hadn’t been dunked. I confirmed this by using the Sound app on the Apple Watch, which showed the submerged phones were playing back at a few decibels lower than the new phones.

I reached out to Apple and the company pointed me toward its official support page about what to do if your iPhone comes into contact with liquid, which is to rinse it off with clean water and wipe it off with a soft, lint-free cloth.
