Set Your Default Payment Card

This is an important step to make sure you’re spending money on the right card. If you only see one card in your Google Pay app, that means it’s your default option already and you can skip this step altogether.

If you’ve added multiple cards though, decide which you’d like to use the most and then open up the Card menu in the app. There you can double tap on the card you want to make a default and press ‘set as default card’.

It’s really simple, but this ensures you’re using the right card when you start spending and don’t rack up a big debt on a card you didn’t realise you were using.

    Are Mobile Wallets Safe

You may be skeptical about storing your credit or debit card information in your phone. But, by and large, mobile wallets are safe.

Whether you’re using Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, your credit card information is never collected by the merchant you’re paying. Instead, each of these services tokenizes account information. When you make a new transaction, your account is represented by a random transaction code, but your actual card numbers are never shared with the business. Tokenization helps prevent fraud and minimizes damage if the merchant undergoes a data breach.

For additional security, make sure your devices lock screen is password-enabled with a PIN, alphanumeric phrase, pattern or a fingerprint, facial or iris scan.

    Beware New App Is Horrible

I will be deleting this app immediately! Its so disappointing to have an app that you love and then go to use it one day only to discover everything you loved about it has changed. Typically, I like updates. This one, however, is horribly unnecessarily complicated. Plus, the new update includes being forced to pay a fee for instant deposit when using a debit card. Really Google? I HAVE to pay $15 to transfer $1000 out of my Google ACCT to my bank account if Im using my debit card? But if I want to use my bank, it will take up to 5 days. No worries. Ill wait. The absolute worst new update I discovered was when I tried to send money from one of my other accounts. I use my Google account to put money aside for my son. Essentially, a temporary saving. Anyway, I go to send money using my other account and was denied access to my own accounts. The message indicated that I HAD to use the money in my Google account before I would be allowed to send money from my other account. Wrap your mind around that. Youre being told that you cannot use your other accounts until you use all the money in your Google account. Unbelievably horrible. Not sure what Goggle was thinking, other than greed. Ill be going back to Cash App. At least they give you an option to do instant deposit using your debit card. Extremely disappointed.

    Which Banks Support Google Pay

Google Pay works with virtually every bank and credit card provider in the U.S., as well as many of the larger credit unions. Banks that support Google Pay include:

    • Synchrony Bank
    • Wells Fargo

Google Pay may not support certain cobranded credit cards issued by Citi, such as AAdvantage/American Airlines, Sears, Macys and Home Depot cards. It also may not support some commercial credit cards or ATM-only cards issued by other banks. For instance, it does not support commercial credit cards issued by HSBC. It also does not support Mastercard credit cards issued by Wells Fargo or commercial Visa cards issued by a bank.

In all, Google Pay can connect with thousands of credit cards issued by thousands of banks and credit unions across the U.S. and the world. You can even connect your PayPal account to your Google Pay account, enabling you to use your PayPal balance or PayPal credit to make a purchase using Google Pay.

    Is There A Fee

How to find stores that accept Google Pay

When you use Google Pay to transfer money to family or friends, or when you use a debit or credit card to make a purchase in a store or through a service, Google Pay charges no added fees.

Keep in mind, if you use Google Pay in a store, the credit card provider may consider it a card-present transaction and charge the merchant a fee of up to 4%.

If the merchant is passing those fees onto customers or offering a cash discount for those who dont use a credit card, you could pay more than 6% to use your credit card through Google Pay. Its important to read signage around the store before you make a decision about how to pay, and keep a debit card or bank account linked to Google Pay so you can save on fees in those circumstances.

Thanks to smartphones, its no longer necessary to stick your credit card into a grimy machine to pay for gas. There are a couple of different methods you can use to pay with your phone. Well show you how.

The two different methods are physically tapping your phone to the pump or paying from an app. With tap-to-pay, your phone essentially becomes your credit card, and you simply tap it to the contactless reader. The latter involves paying from an app from the comfort of your car.

    What Is Contactless Payment

Before we dive into Apple Pay and Google Pay, its important to understand the technology behind these payment methods. Both operate on contactless payment.

With contactless payment, you dont need to slide your card at the point of sale terminal. Instead, you use your card in a compatible device.

Contactless payment uses near field communication technology to obtain payments from your device. These terminals use radio frequency identification to communicate the payment between the mobile device and the payment reader. The information transmits through RFID to make your payment at the register.

Most people use their mobile phones or compatible wearable devices like watches to make payments. When you get to the register, you simply open the Apple Pay or Google Pay app, hold or wave your device over the POS terminal, and make your payment. Its a simple process that takes less time than swiping your bank card.
