iPhone 14 Vs iPhone 14 Pro Review: The Verdict

When it comes down to choosing between the two models, it says it in the name the iPhone 14 Pro is just too hard to beat.

The additions of the Dynamic Island design, camera enhancements and upgrades to the processor and display make it Apples best iPhone yet. I found it to be a noticeable improvement over my iPhone 13.

Yes, the standard iPhone 14 is cheaper by a few hundred dollars , which might be enough of an incentive depending on your budget. But if youre dropping that much money on an iPhone anyway, you may as well pick the better model and go with the 14 Pro.

I certainly can never go back after using the iPhone 14 Pro. Ive been an Apple user for generations now, but I didnt realise what Id been missing out on until I picked up this device.

These are just some of the everyday musings Ive had during my time with both iPhone 14 models. If youd like a more technical review of the two phones, we suggest checking out what our friends at Gizmodo had to say.

Battery Life And Charging

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is Apples biggest update to the iPhones battery life yet. Remember when we mentioned that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a little thicker than the 12 Pro Max? The result of that is that the device offers a much better battery life. This is thanks to a bigger battery, more efficient processor, and ProMotion display in the iPhone 13 Pro max.

The Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max offers up to 28 hours of video playback, 25 hours of video playback, and 95 hours of audio playback. In contrast, the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers 20 hours of video playback, 12 hours of streamed video playback, and 80 hours of audio playback.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max can charge that battery a little fast, too but not much. The newer phone offers fast charging at up to 27W, which is a little faster than 22W on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Most wont actually take advantage of that faster charging, and they both still charge wireless through Qi at up to 7.5W or MagSafe at up to 15W.

iPhone 12 Pro Vs iPhone 13 Pro: Camera

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro are very similar, in many respects. Both feature a triple lens set up, and each has a standard, ultra-wide and a telephoto lens. But theres been some small but key changes under the hood.

The iPhone 13 Pros standard lens, which is 26mm equivalent, has a slightly faster aperture and also uses the larger sensor size previously only found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Putting these two specifications together adds up to better low-light performance. On a similar note, the ultra wide angle lens now has a much wider f/1.8 aperture, when compared to the f/2.4 lens on the iPhone 12 Pro.

Lastly, the telephoto lens for the iPhone 13 Pro has been bumped up to 3x , compared with the 2x of the iPhone 12 Pro, or 2.5x of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. You do lose out a little when it comes to aperture though, with the iPhone 13 Pros being f/2.8 compared to the iPhone 12 Pros f/2.0.

A new addition for the iPhone 13 Pro is the ability to focus extremely close-up in a new automatic macro mode. This works by switching to the ultra-wide camera when a close-subject has been detected. As it does it automatically, theres no way to stop it happening, but its quite a striking difference compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, which doesnt offer the same functionality.

Colors Storage And Pricing

iPhone 12 Pro Vs iPhone 13 Pro: Which One Will You Get

An additional color, better storage options, new camera features, and a better processing chip are all available with the iPhone 13 Pro. Still, if budget is a concern and youre happy to buy a second-hand device, you can save a lot of money by getting the iPhone 12 Pro. These devices are pretty similar, so if none of those features matter to you, then its probably worth sticking with the 12 Pro.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 1: Here Are The Biggest Differences

Here’s how the iPhone 13 compares to the iPhone 12 based on our iPhone testing

An iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 face-off remains relevant even after the iPhone 14 introduced four new devices to Apple’s lineup. Even with this reshuffle of the best iPhone rankings, both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 remain on sale at reduced prices. So it helps to know what sets these different models apart.

The iPhone 13 is the newer of the two phones, having arrived in 2021. Apple currently features two versions the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 and a smaller 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini. Though it’s not as recent as the iPhone 14, either iPhone 13 model can claim to have better chipset, cameras and battery life than earlier iPhones including the iPhone 12.

But the iPhone 12 still holds an advantage over most of the more recent models it’s cheaper, as Apple continues to drop the price on this 2020 phone.

Assuming you’re fine with an older iPhone, you have to ask what’s more important more features or a lower price? That’s down to you, but we can help you figure it out.

We’ve tested and used every iPhone, so trust us when we say that the iPhone 13 improves upon the iPhone 12 in almost every significant way. But the biggest improvements you’ll spot with the iPhone 13 comes in the form of longer battery life and better displays.

iPhone 13 Pro Vs iPhone 14 Pro: Who Should Upgrade

Alright, so that brings us to the all-important question: If youre comparing iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro, and you have an iPhone 13 Pro already, should you upgrade?

For the most part, I would say No. The differences are pretty minor, so if youre an average user who still likes their iPhone 13 Pro just fine, then go ahead and stick with it. In fact, I would wait another two or three years before upgrading for most users.

That said, some people should probably upgrade, even though these phones arent that different. To help you determine if its time for you to upgrade, heres a few questions to ask yourself. If you answer strongly to one of these questions, and especially a few of them, then it might be time for an upgrade.

Dont Doubt The Software

Safe to note the camera system on the iPhone 12 Pro features similar configurations to the 13 Pro, but still loses the battle. The wide aperture, optical zoom, sensor size, pixel count, and low light capabilities boast better specs on the iPhone 13 Pro. Toss in the highly anticipated cinematic mode and macro photography on the new model and you have a clear winner. Apple continues how their smartphones high megapixel count process inside the camera, meaning each upgrades software change will inevitably be better than its predecessor.

What might be the most oblivious upgrade from the 12 Pro to the 13 Pro is Apples introduction to cinematic mode a comprehensive, yet simple-to-use feature bringing cinema-level quality to your phone. Think of it as Portrait Mode for the moving subject, a blurred bokeh-licious background while subject-tracking a moving focus. When two subjects are placed in the frame, Cinematic Mode focuses on whoever is closer until the closer subject turns away, thus shifting to the further away subject in the frame. Although imperfect and initially gimmicky, when utilized under proper lighting conditions it delivers smooth, highly-effective cinematic goodness. Worth noting that its only applicable to 1080p HD recording at 30 frames per second .

The iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 13 Pro Processor And Battery

Processor and battery life go hand in hand. The iPhone 12 Pro has the A14 Chip, and the iPhone 13 Pro has the A15 Chip. Both are the fastest processors in any smartphone, so you won’t find a difference between them. What is noticeable is the efficiency of the A15, which allows the iPhone 13 Pro to have a longer battery life.

  • The iPhone 12 Pro lasts up to 17 hours of internet browsing while the iPhone 13 Pro lasts up to 22 hours. A five-hour increase!

Newer iPhone Better Pictures

The iPhone 13 Pro Maxs cameras house the largest sensor ever used in an iPhone. The main camera on the 13 Pro Max features a 1/1.65 sensor vs a 1/1.9 sensor on the 12 Pro Max. Thanks to this, the main camera now captures up to 2.2x more light for both photos and videos. The ultra-wide camera captures 92% more light. This means shots taken in low-light settings will come out better on the iPhone 13 Pro Max compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Users can now capture macro shots on the 13 Pro Max thanks to the new auto-focus system used in the ultra wide camera. This allows you take pictures of subjects as little as 2cm away. This feature is applicable to video recordings too.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs iPhone 13 Pro Max Shootout: The Photos

We’ll start with the selfie camera, since this portrait-mode shot of me effectively shows off what’s changed between generations. The portrait cutout effect is basically the same on both phones, with the two mostly separating me from the background accurately. However, the differences on my face come down to color and detail.

On the iPhone 13 Pro Max, I look almost tanned , with perfectly smooth skin. But the iPhone 14 Pro Max reveals the truth: I’m pretty pale, and I do in fact have pores in my skin. It’s a more accurate, natural look that I’ve been looking for from iPhones for a while, and I’m glad it’s finally here.

Of course, the main changes are found on the rear cameras, so I took a full batch of test shots both during the day and at night to see the differences. And while I think the day shots are fairly similar in quality, the iPhone 14 Pro Max really pulls ahead when the sun goes down.

To start with, we have this late afternoon shot, taken using the main cameras while looking at the Shard over St. George the Martyr’s Church. The iPhone 14 Pro Max’s image has much brighter highlights, but no other major differences between it and its predecessor’s photo.

Next, an ultrawide shot of The Roebuck pub near Borough. The sky’s paler in the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s image, but more notably it’s got better texture than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. You can really see how the brickwork on the building or the leaves in the trees are layered, whereas it’s a bit flat on the older iPhone.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a trio of 12MP cameras on the back. Those cover the roles of main, ultrawide and 3x telephoto duties. There’s also one more 12MP camera on the front, a selfie snapper with a fixed focus.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max makes a few notable changes. The biggest is that its main camera now has a 48MP sensor, which can shoot at 12MP like before, or in full 48MP ProRAW mode for when you want to play around with shots in post. It also enables a new 2x zoom level by using the center of the sensor for greater flexibility, but it’s also slightly smaller at 1/1.28″ rather than 1/1.7″.

On top of that, the front camera now comes with autofocus and a wider aperture, which makes taking in-focus selfies from different distances much simpler. There’s also a larger ultrawide camera with a wider aperture for increased brightness. Finally, there’s Photonic Engine, Apple’s new photography processing software that aims to provide better colors and texture in photos, particularly in low light.

iPhone 13 Pro Vs iPhone 12 Pro: Battery

We were a little concerned last year when the iPhone 12 Pro rolled out with a 2,815mAh battery, which was a regression from its predecessor. Thankfully, the iPhone 13 Pro ups the capacity to 3,095mAh.

With the inclusion of a 120Hz display, you might assume that the iPhone 13 Pro needs that extra juice. But the use of LTPO display technology, and Apples extensive software optimization, means that this screen is actually more efficient than its old 60Hz displays in many scenarios.

Apple is claiming that the iPhone 13 Pro gains 1.5 hours of battery life per charge compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, and we wouldnt dispute that claim.

In practice, weve found the new phone to enjoy significantly better battery life than the iPhone 12 Pro and other Pro handsets before it. Weve found the iPhone 13 Pro is capable of lasting a long day of high-frequency usage, generally ending the day with 1020% left in the tank.

Lighter use days may see you ending the day with around half a tankful.

Apple hasnt improved the iPhone 13 Pros charging provision at all. Were still looking at 20W wired, 15W wireless, and absolutely no charging brick bundled in. Just like the iPhone 12 Pro, in other words.

Which Is Better For Night Mode Photos

While both phones are able to take genuinely stunning images at night without a tripod, the iPhone 13 Pro just about nudges the 12 Pro Max out of the competition. Its larger image sensor and wider aperture are evidently helping it capture more light, resulting in sharper images with less image noise. The difference isn’t always noticeable using the standard lens, but the iPhone 13 Pro is consistently better with its superwide and telephoto lenses.

But it is still a subtle difference and while it’s good to see the phone taking a step forward with its technology, it’s certainly not enough to justify upgrading from to the 13 Pro from the 12 Pro Max. However, if you’re looking to upgrade from a much older handset and you’re wanting to future-proof yourself for longer with the best nighttime image quality around, then the iPhone 13 Pro is the phone to go for.

The iPhone 13 Pro Comes With More Color Options

For starters, the biggest visual difference between these iPhones is the available colors. The iPhone 13 Pro comes with one more color option than the iPhone 14 Pro, although most of the core colors are still the same.

To be specific, the iPhone 13 Pro comes in Alpine Green, Sierra Blue, and Graphite, Silver, and Gold. The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, comes in Silver, Gold, and Space Black, and Deep Purple.

In my opinion, the two best colors on both of these iPhones are the Deep Purple and the Alpine Green. So if the color of your iPhone is important to you, then this might be something to consider.

It measures almost exactly the same, at 5.8 by 2.8 by 0.3 inches, although it’s half an ounce heavier at 7.2 ounces. iPhone 12 Pro cases don’t fit on the 13 Pro because of the significantly bigger camera bump on the back, so you’ll want to check out our roundup of the best compatible cases.

The iPhone 13 Pro has a noticeably smaller front-camera notch than the iPhone 12 Pro

The first major noticeable change is in the 6.1-inch, 2,532-by-1,170-pixel, 120Hz screen, which like the screen on the iPhone 13 Pro Max has been amped up from 800 cd/m2 of brightness to 1,000 cd/m2. The display now flows at 120Hz in Apple’s native apps. to use the new refresh rate.) The smoother scrolling is most noticeable in Safari, which feels jittery when you go back to an older iPhone from this one.

It might have a smaller notch, but the iPhone 13 Pro has larger camera lenses than the iPhone 12 Pro

The zoom camera lens also faces a major change. The iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro have 2x zoom lenses, while the iPhone 13 Pro has a 3x zoom. That brings the smaller Pro to parity with its Pro Max sibling, which wasn’t true last year, when the 12 Pro Max had 2.5x zoom.

That, in turn, lets you get closer to the action. Here’s the iPhone 13 Pro’s and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 3x zoom compared with the iPhone 12 Pro’s 2x:
