Can Rain Cause iPhone Water Damage
Yes, rain, another form of water, can cause iPhone water damage. Although every iPhone since the iPhone 7 is water- and splash-resistant, even the slightest amount of liquid can cause water damage. Unless your iPhone is in perfect condition, we recommend that you avoid using your iPhone in rainy weather. Rainwater can enter the ports and cause a lot of damage.
You also need to be careful about using wired headphones on a rainy day, especially if you have an older iPhone. Water can run down the wires of your headphones into the headphone jack or Lightning port of your iPhone and cause damage once inside.

Option B: The Old Smartphone In Rice Method
Putting your phone into a bowl of uncooked rice is a well-known way of trying to dry it out. Its not ideal, but if youre traveling or otherwise dont have access to the emergency kit mentioned above, its certainly better than doing nothing.
That said, a few small details make a big difference in how well this approach will work.
- Ensure your phone is powered off, taken apart as much as possible, and completely dry on the outside and in the charging port.
- If you have a container with a lid, use it. Fill it with enough uncooked rice to completely surround the phone on all sides.
- If youve removed the battery or other components, put them in the rice as well.
- Put the rice and phone under a desk lamp or similar mild heat source to encourage the evaporation process.
- Give it as long as you can. Ideally you want to give it 48 hours or more, but at least leave it overnight if you can. While some phones wont be revived no matter how long they sit in rice, the longer the better.
- Before reassembling, check carefully to ensure no grains of rice remain inside the phone. Check headphone sockets and charging ports in particular. A toothpick or sliver of wood is the easiest and most available tool.
Don’t Do This To A Wet iPhone
If your iPhone is soaked, what you don’t do is just as important as what you do. If you’re not careful, you might accidentally do something that could further damage your device. So, if your iPhone or iPod is wet, don’t do the following:
Never turn it on. If your iPhone is water damaged, never try to turn it on or wake it. You may be tempted to do that to see if it still works, but doing that can short out its electronics and damage them even more. In fact, you should avoid anything that could cause the electronics to function, like getting notifications that light up the screen. If your phone was off when it got wet, you’re fine. If your device was on, turn it off .
Don’t use a hair dryer. While this technique has worked for some people, you can also damage your device or spread the water around more. It’s best to avoid fans for the same reason. Don’t leave your device on a radiator, either. That will get much too hot and could damage the phone in other ways.

Option C: The Air It Out Method
Lets say the grocery store is closed or youre out in the middle of nowhere, and even a bag of rice is impossible to come by. What then?
Look around the area for a place with air movement. Hopefully youre indoors by now, or in some other place where theres little chance of the phone getting wetter. Your main goal at this point is evaporation of whatever liquid is still inside.
A fan is ideal, but even a laptop, cable box, or TV has some exhaust vents. You dont really want dirty air blowing onto your phone, so give the vents a quick wipe to remove any obvious dust and dirt.
Be sure the phone rests at an angle: water should be flowing out of the device, not pooling inside of it. Put a paper towel or napkin underneath to absorb whatever water drains out.
The longer it can air out, the better. Again, at least give it overnight, with a day or two much better if you can.

Manually Set The Frequency
To do this, you’ll need to swipe up and down to adjust the frequency , and you can tap “Play” to play the sound and continue adjusting if necessary. The ideal frequency for dispelling water is said to be around 165 Hz, so do your best to get it somewhere in that vicinity. With the frequency set in the sweet spot, mechanical vibration waves of pressure and displacement will shake the water out.
Make sure your iPhone’s volume is as high as it goes, then watch your speakers. Depending on how much water is there, you should see small water droplets exit your speaker grilles. You might even see some come out the front speaker by the earpiece. But even if you can’t see the water make its exit, your iPhone should sound normal again almost immediately. Press “Stop” whenever you’re done.

Do Rice And Silica Methods Really Work
Both uncooked rice and silica are desiccant, meaning they possess the ability to absorb moisture from their vicinity. Although, when stacked against each other, silica gel proves to be better at absorbing moisture than rice, which is why we recommend putting your wet phone into uncooked rice for a longer period than keeping it with silica gel to absorb all the moisture.
