The iPhone 12 is what most people should buy, especially because it has a feature that has been limited to the Pro models until now: an OLED display. Its 6.1-inch screen allows for much deeper blacks and a wider range of colors over the LCD on the iPhone 11, and it packs as many pixels as the iPhone 12 Pro, which means sharper-looking movies and shows. It’s also a speedy phone thanks to the A14 chip. The camera is a step up over the iPhone SE, with the main lens utilizing Night mode to brighten up dark scenes and an ultrawide lens to capture sweeping scenes.

It’s also an HDR screen, which is primarily of use when watching HDR movies from Netflix, Disney+, iTunes etc. The iPhone supports Dolby Vision HDR, which is a more advanced form of HDR, and is delivered by all those services I just mentioned.
When an HDR video demands it, the screen can peak its brightness as high as 1,200 nits, which is extremely impressive. Very few TVs can achieve this, and that includes flagship OLED TVs. Combined with the precision of OLED’s self-emissive pixels, there’s genuinely stunning contrast and realism here, whether that’s more stylised blockbusters or just watching nature documentaries with the most true-to-life colours around.
It’s not just Android flagships that have these screens everything from the Pixel 5 , to the OnePlus 8 Pro have them so at this point, it’s noticeable that the iPhone 12 is missing out.

Skipping right over the iPhone 9, Apple announced the XS and XS Max at its September 2018 event in the Steve Jobs Theater. These models were well named, as they were definite upgrades along the lines of the iPhone X. Both models had the front-facing camera for Portrait-mode selfies. For biometric authentication, the iPhone 12 and 12 mini use Face ID, the facial recognition system that was first introduced in 2017. Face ID components are housed in the TrueDepth camera system in the display notch.
Face ID is used across iOS tasks for unlocking the iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming app purchases, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.
Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras. A Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin to create a 3D facial scan that maps the curves and planes of each face, with the scan read by an infrared camera.
The facial depth map is relayed to the A14 chip where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to authenticate identity. Face ID works in low light and in the dark, and with hats, beards, glasses, sunglasses, scarves, and other accessories that partially obscure the face.
Face ID data is stored in the Secure Enclave, and it is not accessible to Apple, third-party apps, or anyone who has your phone. Authentication happens on-device and no Face ID data is uploaded to Apple.
