iPhone Microphone Not Working Fix #: Disable Bluetooth

  • Save

If you inadvertently have a pair of Bluetooth headphones, such as AirPods, actively in use with the iPhone, the headphones will act as the microphone, not the built-in microphone in the iPhone. So make sure your wireless earbuds arent currently active by disabling Bluetooth.

To do this:

  • Toggle the Phone Noise Cancellation switch to OFF .
  • Your iPhones Audio Connectors

Depending on your iPhone you will have one or two options for connecting an external mic to your iPhone.

    • If you have an earlier iPhone you will be able to use either the headphone socket or the lightning socket as your audio input.
    • From the iPhone 7 onwards you will only be able to use the lightning socket as an input.

Until the iPhone 7 came along, the iPhones headphone socket had a dual function. It could pass audio both into and out of your iPhone. So, you could listen to calls or your favorite music on your earbuds. You could also use the built-in microphone on your earbuds to make calls or record audio. Of course, you could also plug in an external microphone to record quality audio.

So, the headphone socket allowed audio both in and out. At least it did until Apple removed the headphone socket from the iPhone 7 and later models.

However, a word of warning. If you use an iPhone with a headphone socket, you cant plug in just any 3.5mm mic. There is an issue about 3.5mm jacks and iPhones you need to be aware of.

The headphone socket on an iPhone only takes 3.5mm TRRS jacks. So the first problem is that some microphones come with a TRS jack and not the TRRS jack that iPhones support. So, plugging a TRS jack into a TRRS socket wont work. The electrical connections just dont match up. Fortunately, its becoming less common for microphones intended for use with iPhone to have 3.5mm TRS jacks.

Configure Privacy Settings For Audio Apps

If you noticed that the audio or no sounds issues occur in a particular app, then its time to verify that the application audio output is enabled. To do that, go to Settings-> Privacy-> Microphone, then find the particular app and enable the apps permission.

If its the Zoom or Skype app that the microphone is not working, just enable the microphone permission for the app. After that, restart your iPhone and see if there are changes.

First Test And Inspect Your iPhones Microphone

The first thing you should do when your iPhones microphone stops working is to test it using different apps. This is because your iPhone has three microphones: one on the back for recording video audio, one on the bottom for speakerphone calls and other voice recordings, and one in the earpiece for phone calls.

    Use Compressed Air With Caution

Fix Microphone Problem on iPhone SE 2| iPhone Microphone Not Working Issues Solved

Compressed air, or spray dusters, are a great tool for keeping technology clean, particularly tough-to-reach places like MacBook fans or underneath a keyboard. That being said, compressed air is potentially damaging to your iPhone speaker or microphone. In fact, Apple advises against using compressed air entirely.

This is because compressed air is surprisingly forceful, and it can break the moving parts inside speakers or microphones. Many users have used compressed air haphazardly and found that their speakers or microphones stopped working completely afterward.

However, if you read the instructions on the can and use it from an appropriate distance, it is possible to use compressed air safely. We advise an absolute minimum distance of 6 and suggest spraying the air at an angle instead of straight into the speaker or microphone. Additionally, any loose dirt will fly into the air so you should cover your eyes before spraying.

If you are talking on your iPhone via the Phone app, on FaceTime, on Skype, or Zoom or any number of other communication apps, you want to make sure you havent accidentally tapped the mute button in those apps.

I know, you may THINK you would remember tapping the mute button, but sometimes your chin can hit it if the iPhone is up to your ear. So if someone on your call says they cant hear you, check to make sure you havent accidentally muted yourself first.
