How Do I Turn Off Call Silence On iPhone
If youve enabled Do Not Disturb mode to black all alerts, turn it off to restore incoming call and other notifications.
Go to Settings> Do Not Disturb.
Move the toggle to the left next to Do Not Disturb.
To quickly allow incoming call notifications, swipe up from the bottom of your device to bring up the Control Center. Tap the moon-shaped Do Not Disturb icon to turn off silencing.
You dont necessarily have to turn off Do Not Disturb Mode if you want to receive notifications from only people you know. From Settings> Do Not Disturb> Phone> Allow Calls From, choose your preferred contacts under Groups.
Alternatives To Silence Unknown Callers
If silently blocking most phone numbers in the world sounds too aggressive to you, you have some alternatives that can silence spam calls.
While its not the exact same thing, you can set up the Do Not Disturb feature only to allow calls from Favorites. DND also has an option to allow repeated calls. This means that a second call from the same number within three minutes wont be silenced.
You can also use a spam blocker app like Hiya to automatically block spam and robocalls, but its not a complete fix. The success rate of the app will depend on its database of spam callers, which is never fully complete. While it might not block all spam calls, it should get most of them.

Calls from unknown numbers will only come through if Siri is able to find the unknown number from your mail or messages.
This way, you wont be constantly disturbed by random strangers in the middle of the night or during work as your iPhone will ignore them for you.
Why Are My Calls Being Silenced On My iPhone
If youre suddenly not receiving call notifications and dont know why, check the switch that controls Ring and Silent Mode it could be set to Silent Mode by mistake.
You may also want to double-check that you didn’t mistakenly activate the Do Not Disturb button in your Control Center.
Other possible reasons for call silencing could include:
- Your bedtime and sleep mode settings: If you use the Bedtime feature on iOS 13 and earlier, check to see if Do Not Disturb During Bedtime is on from the Clock app > Bedtime> Options. From the Health app in iOS 14, choose Browse> Sleep> Options> Sleep Mode and look at the toggle next to Turn On Automatically.

Use Do Not Disturb On Your iPhone iPad And Ipod Touch
With Focus in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, you can use Do Not Disturb to silence calls, alerts, and notifications that you get while your device is locked. You can also schedule Do Not Disturb and allow calls from certain people.
When you have a Do Not Disturb turned on, a crescent moon icon appears in the status bar and on your Lock Screen. To turn on Do Not Disturb, follow the steps below for your software version.
Not sure which version of iOS or iPadOS you have? Go to Settings > General > About and look under Software Version.
Scenarios For Either Mode
With the biggest difference between the two modes being the screen lighting up in silent mode when you receive a call or text, flipping the ring/silent switch is the easiest way to silence your iPhone as long as it’s in your pocket, purse or backpack. Just be sure you check to see if the Vibrate on Silent setting is disabled, because a vibrating phone can be just as distracting and therefore embarrassing as a ringing phone in some cases.
If you generally keep your iPhone out and about — in your hand, on your lap, on a table or desk — then Do Not Disturb is the better option so that your screen suddenly lighting up doesn’t distract other moviegoers, your classmates or parishioners. I would recommend setting Allow Calls From to No One if you will frequently enable Do Not Disturb manually so that you aren’t shamed when a call gets through from a Favorite contact or another exception.

See If Any Custom Ringtones Aren’t Working
If the phone won’t ring for a specific caller and that person isn’t blocked, then check to see if it’s a custom ringtone you assigned to them that isn’t working.
On iPhones using iOS 12 and earlier, you can change the custom ringtone for a contact. Open the phone app, select their name from your contacts, and tap “Edit” in the top right corner of the contact’s page. Under the “Ringtones” header, select a non-custom ringtone from the list of available options and then do a test call to see if your iPhone still won’t ring.
For iPhone users with iOS 13 or higher, follow these steps to remove a custom ringtone before resetting the tone for a contact.
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Select “Sounds & Haptics.”
3. Choose “Ringtone.”
4. Locate the tone you want to delete from the Ringtones list before swiping left on it.
5. Tap the red “Delete” icon that appears to delete the ringtone.
6. Go back to your contact and assign a different ringtone to their profile.
Turn Off Call Forwarding On Your iPhone
If call forwarding is enabled on your iPhone, itll forward all your incoming calls to your specified number or to your voicemail. This may be why your iPhone is not ringing, as its simply receiving any calls because those calls are being sent to the forwarded number.
Disabling call forwarding will fix the issue.
