How To FAST Charge iPhone in ONLY 30 Minutes !

Sure, using wireless charging makes you feel like youre in a science-fiction movie but there’s a high cost to this convenience.

If you have a newer iPhone that supports wireless charging, you should only use it when youve got time to spare and dont need your device to replenish as much power as possible in the shortest time. Wireless charging is much slower than good old-fashioned cable charging.

The Cheapest Way To Fast Charge Your iPhone 8 And iPhone X In 2022

The iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X are the most powerful iPhones ever made, but there’s a problem with the charger in the box: it’s the same old standard USB charger that’s been shipping with iPhones for years, and in 2017 it is slow. There are faster charging options, and the newest iPhones support one called USB-C Power Delivery. While the iPhone 8 and X still have Lightning ports instead of USB-C, they have built-in support for the faster charging standard and it’s really quite effective.

USB-C PD is the same standard as is used to charge the latest MacBook Pro, so you know a lot of power can be pumped through that port. We set out to determine the cheapest way to quickly charge your fancy new iPhone so you can get charged up and on with your life. USB-C has added advantages over the older rectangular USB-A it’s smaller and reversible, so there’s never any question about which way to plug it in!

Use A Wall Charger To Charge Your iPhone Faster

The fastest way to charge your iPhone is to plug it into a wall charger. If you have an iPhone 8 or newer model, you can charge your iPhone even faster with an 18W or higher power adapter. If you have an iPhone 12, you will need a 20W power adapter for fast charging.

All iPhones that have been released since the iPhone 8 support a feature called fast charging, which means the battery can be charged to 50% in around 30 minutes. By comparison, tests show it can take around 90 minutes to charge an iPhone to 50% using the 5W charger that comes with most models.

Apple has only ever included a power adapter that supports fast charging with the iPhone 11. So, if you have any other model, you will need to buy a power adapter that supports fast charging separately.

You can find the wattage printed on the bottom of most power adapters. Otherwise, you can calculate the wattage by multiplying the volts and amps. For example, if a charger has a power output of 10V and 2A, it will have a wattage of 20W.

To guarantee that your power adapter supports fast charging, it is best to buy one that is made by Apple, or one that has been certified to work with your iPhone model. If you are buying a third-party power adapter, Apple says it also needs to support USB Power Delivery .

What Is Fast Charging And Why Cant My Charger Do It

Weve written a comprehensive guide to fast charging, but lets review. Fast charging uses a newer USB technology called USB Power Delivery . This technology is only available in USB-C connections, which can route power as well as data and are suitable for charging a variety of devices. Its a very flexible and efficient option that can optimize power management. By upgrading to a USB PD connection, you can achieve charging speeds far faster than Apples older Lightning cable connections.

You see, the 5W charger that came with most iPhones is not capable of fast charging. It can supply enough power for a basic overnight recharge, but its not able to transmit a charge fast enough to juice anything with a higher-capacity battery, like an iPad. Most iPads come with a 12W charging block instead, so if you own an iPad, you can use one of these to speed up your iPhones charging rate it wont harm your phone in any way since the phone will never take more charge than it can handle.

The iPhone 8 and newer devices are capable of even faster charging with support for 18W connections and beyond. But getting those kinds of speeds requires an even better charger.

Note that this is only the beginning of fast charging trends. In 2020, Oppo revealed a 125W charger that can charge a 4,000mAh battery in 20 minutes. This is a burgeoning sector in the phone market, and its likely that charging speeds will continue to get even faster.

What Is Magsafe Wireless Charging

2020’s newest and possibly coolest charging addition is MagSafe for iPhone. Originally, MagSafe was a term used to describe the magnetic breakaway charging cables for MacBooks. Charger cables for Macs were designed to connect themselves magnetically in an effort to resolve certain alignment issues, to prevent damage from sudden accidental unplugging, and to make cable plug-in more convenient and less finicky.

When Apple released the 2020 iPhone 12 lineup, they also announced the development of MagSafe technology in the form of magnet arrays embedded in the backs of iPhone 12 devices to assist with proper charging. With MagSafe, iPhones no longer have to be manually placed “just so” on wireless chargers in order to charge properly and quickly. To top it off, MagSafe wireless chargers can provide around double the power of traditional Qi wireless chargers, making them competitors in the field of fast charging.

Only a few accessory makers, including Belkin and Otterbox, have MagSafe compatible gear to market, delivering charging stands, iPhone cases, and in-car charging devices, but more will likely be available soon.

Put It In Airplane Mode

Sometimes it isn’t practical to turn your phone off completely, but the next best thing is to put it in Airplane Mode. In Airplane Mode, your phone disables Wi-Fi and cellular service, which can save a significant amount of power, letting the phone charge faster.

To do that, pull down the Control Panel from the top right of the screen and tap the airplane icon at the top left. Or, if you’re using an iPhone older than the iPhone X, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and tap the airplane icon at the top left.

Does Fast Charging Damage The iPhone Battery

How to Tell If Your iPhone Is Charging When Its On or Off

There is no doubt that fast charging an iPhone creates more heat than normal charging, but this does not necessarily mean that fast charging will harm the battery.

In fact, the temperature monitoring module inside the iPhone will control the input power based on the real-time temperature of the battery. When its too hot, the iPhone module will lower the power delivery rate to make sure its under 50 degrees Celsius. Likewise, the iPhone will gradually reduce the input power when the battery reaches 50%, to maximize the lifespan of the battery. When it reaches around 80%, charging becomes significantly slower. This is precisely why some iPhone users think that their iPhones stop charging at 80%. You can learn more about this issue from our previous blog: Why Your iPhone Stops Charging At 80%

Dont Use Your Apple Watch Or Old Apple Chargers

How to Charge Your iPhone Faster

Long-term Apple fans may have plenty of older Apple chargers lying about, or those made for an Apple Watch. You should not use these to charge your iPhone.

While perfectly safe, these are basic 5V, 1A adapters. Low current, low voltage leaves them with power output to your iPhone of just 5W, and they draw 5.6-6.1W from your outlet according to our power meter.

These are extremely slow, and should not be used unless its as a bedside charger that will be used overnight.

Is It Safe To Charge My Phone Overnight

Have you heard about trickle charging and its effects on lithium-ion batteries? You may have heard it discussed in the context of leaving your phone plugged in overnight.

Without getting overly technical about electrical charges and the ways they work, trickle charge is basically a method of keeping a battery charged to 100 percent while it’s still connected to a charger. Since some incremental loss of charge happens naturally, a battery being charged will need to be “topped off” every so often to maintain full charge, which keeps it in a high-stress state. Business Insider notes that trickle charging is not healthy for the lithium-ion batteries in Apple products because of this stress.

Keeping your phone plugged in when it’s already charged can wear down a lithium-ion battery, according to Battery University, so it’s not a good idea to leave your iPhone charging longer than you need to. In Battery University’s words, “Li-ion does not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so. In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because a high voltage stresses the battery.”

iPhone Fast Charging Techs: Pd And Pdo

The Qualcomm Quick Charge was the first fast charging standard, widely used in Android phones including the Samsung Galaxy line while the USB Power Delivery standard is relatively new and adopted by Google and Apple. Apple first introduced the USB Power Delivery fast charging standard to the iPad in 2015, then the iPhone in 2017.

The USB Power Delivery standard provides a slightly higher power output, up to 100W maximum. Unlike the Qualcomm QC, it’s used in tablets and laptops as well. So, it is expected to see a greater adoption of the USB Power Delivery fast charging standard in more devices in the future.

A USB power delivery charger or power adapter can deliver a range of voltages, from 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 19V all the way up to 20V, with each voltage being named PDO1, PDO2, PDO3 and so on. The PDOs differ between different chargers. Take the Apple 29W PD charger as an example. It can only deliver two types of voltage: 5V and 14.5V, so the PDO1 of this charger is 5V, and PDO2 is 14.5V. Before the charger delivers power to the device, they negotiate and find the voltage that both devices support.

Keep Up With Battery Maintenance

There are two things you can do to maintain your battery:

  • Allow your iPhone battery to die at least once a month. “For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month ,” Apple advises.
  • Clean out your iPhone’s lightning port. Before you complain about how slow your phone is charging, check the lightning port for lint and other debris that may have built up inside. Power it off, and with a normal toothpick, gently remove any material that may be clogging up the port. Watch CNET’s demonstration here:
