Its so annoying! Not to mention embarrassingnow youve got to say all that stuff again , thats not cool. So why does this happen? Because your ear has touched and activated the mute button at some point during your conversation thereby preventing others from hearing you. Heres how you can prevent it from happening again.
Before I continue, I quickly want to point out the irony in the fact that newly minted AT&T iPhone owners are experiencing the exact problem an Cingular marketing campaign claimed happened only to the other guys. Check out these videos from the not too distant past:
To understand why some iPhone owners accidentally mute their microphone when moving the phone close to their ear or head, you have to understand how one of the iPhones many sensors works. The iPhone 3G has a proximity sensor near the speaker. This sensor was specifically designed to tell the iPhone whether or not youre holding it up to your ear. If this proximity sensor detects your face, itll lock the keypad preventing any accidental pressing of buttons.
Heres the location of the proximity sensor Im talking about:

How Can You Mute An iPhone
Muting your iPhone prevents the people to whom you’re speaking from hearing any sound from your end. This resolves any sound issues, especially if you’re listening to a conference call with a large number of people or when you know you won’t be speaking for long periods of time. In addition, it avoids interrupting your call with loud noises, such as a delivery truck or sirens. Enable the mute feature by tapping the appropriate icon in the iPhone’s in-call menu.
Make a phone call using your iPhone’s Phone app. An on-screen display appears with in-call options.
Tap the “Mute” icon — a microphone icon with a diagonal line through it — until the background on the button fills in, showing that you’ve muted your line.
Tap the “Mute” icon until the background changes to black to stop muting your phone call.

Scenarios For Either Mode
With the biggest difference between the two modes being the screen lighting up in silent mode when you receive a call or text, flipping the ring/silent switch is the easiest way to silence your iPhone as long as it’s in your pocket, purse or backpack. Just be sure you check to see if the Vibrate on Silent setting is disabled, because a vibrating phone can be just as distracting and therefore embarrassing as a ringing phone in some cases.
If you generally keep your iPhone out and about — in your hand, on your lap, on a table or desk — then Do Not Disturb is the better option so that your screen suddenly lighting up doesn’t distract other moviegoers, your classmates or parishioners. I would recommend setting Allow Calls From to No One if you will frequently enable Do Not Disturb manually so that you aren’t shamed when a call gets through from a Favorite contact or another exception.
