How To Turn Off Airdrop On An iPhone 5

There are many settings that you can adjust to save battery on your iPhone, and one of the ones that is most commonly suggested is to turn off AirDrop on an iPhone 5. AirDrop is a feature that allows you to wirelessly share files with other iPhone users, and it has a lot of helpful uses. But if you do not use AirDrop, then it is something that you can disable to save a little bit of battery life.

When AirDrop is turned on it is constantly checking for nearby iOS 7 devices with whom you could share files. Its a great way to send a photo or video, but it is not something that every iOS 7 device user will need. So follow our steps below to learn how to turn off AirDrop on your iPhone 5 that is running iOS 7.

Why iPhone Owners Should Turn Off Airdrop Now

Not everything Apple makes “just works” at least not as intended, anyway.

Security researchers exploring AirDrop, the iOS and macOS feature that lets users wirelessly share files via WiFi and Bluetooth, reported Wednesday on a flaw they say exposes users’ emails and phone numbers. Unless you want every creep on the street to be able to secretly grab your contact info, it’s a bit of a nightmare.

The researchers, a team made up of members of the Secure Mobile Networking Lab and the Cryptography and Privacy Engineering Group , claim they alerted Apple to the flaw in May of 2019. However, according to them, the company never responded.

“As an attacker, it is possible to learn the phone numbers and email addresses of AirDrop users even as a complete stranger,” reads Tuesday’s press release. “All they require is a Wi-Fi-capable device and physical proximity to a target that initiates the discovery process by opening the sharing pane on an iOS or macOS device.”

We reached out to Apple to confirm the findings and to ask if indeed it was alerted to the vulnerability in 2019. We received no immediate response.

Notably, this is not the first questionable privacy situation tied to AirDrop. In 2019, researchers discovered that they were able to determine users’ phone numbers based on the partial hashes AirDrop sends out. It’s not clear if that concern was ever addressed by Apple, especially as the vulnerability disclosed this week appears similar in nature.

How To Turn Off Airdrop On An iPhone Via Settings

    1. Open the Settings app.

    2. Tap “General.”

    4. Tap “Receiving Off” so that no one can see your device.

You have three options to choose from in AirDrop settings. “Receiving Off” makes your iPhone undetectable, “Contacts Only” limits it to just the individuals saved in your contacts, and “Everyone” allows any Apple device nearby to request a transfer.

    How To Accept Airdrop

When someone shares something with you using AirDrop, you see an alert with a preview. You can tap Accept or Decline.

If you tap Accept, the AirDrop will come through within the same app it was sent from. For example, photos appear in the Photos app and websites open in Safari. App links open in the App Store so you can download or purchase the app.

If you AirDrop something to yourself, like a photo from your iPhone to your Mac, you won’t see an option to Accept or Decline it’ll automatically get sent to your device. Just make sure that both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID.

How To Turn Off Airdrop On Your Mac

    1. Open Finder.

    2. Click on AirDrop in the left sidebar. If it’s not in your sidebar, you can search for it with Spotlight and select it when it appears in the search results.

    3. Click on the line that says “Allow me to be discovered by” to open a drop-down menu.

    4. In the drop-down, change it to “No One” so that your Mac can’t be discovered. While this doesn’t technically “turn off” AirDrop, it does ensure that nobody can send you files using AirDrop.

Note, though, that you can still send files using AirDrop. You can also change your Mac’s AirDrop settings so you can only be discovered by your contacts. This is the second option in the “discovered by” drop-down menu.

How to Turn Off AirDrop on iPhone or iPad

First off, the easiest way to desirable AirDrop on iPhones, iPads and iPod touches is to head to Settings > General > AirDrop. Make sure to select Receiving Off.

In iOS 11 and later, you can also disable AirDrop via the Control Center by long-pressing the connectivity pane and then the AirDrop icon.

But, as we mentioned, theres always the possibility that you can inadvertently reenable AirDrop. Similarly, if you disable AirDrop on a childs device for parental control reasons, they can turn the feature back on pretty easily.

To disable AirDrop for good without any chance of reenabling it, you can use Screen Time.

    • Open the Settings app on your iOS or iPadOS device.
    • Tap on Screen Time.
    • Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
    • Youll want to hit the toggle here, if it isnt on already. You may also need to authenticate with your Screen Time passcode if this is on a childs device.
    • Under Allowed Apps, find AirDrop.
    • Hit the toggle next to AirDrop to disable it.

Once you disable AirDrop via Screen Time, there wont be an option to turn it back on via Settings. In fact, the option to do so actually disappears from both Settings > General and the Control Center menu.

Note that doing this feature may also be why AirDrop isnt working on your iOS or iPadOS device. Some users may have accidentally disabled AirDrop when setting up Screen Time. So if youre unable to access AirDrop and youd like to, just follow the above instructions but make sure AirDrop is enabled.

So How Do We Cancel An Accidental Airdrop Transfer

The process to cancel AirDrop transfers is quite simple. While making an AirDrop transfer if you end up tapping on the wrong user you can quickly cancel it by tapping on his or her display picture and name one more time.

The key is to stop the transfer while your iPhone or iPad is showing Waiting under the AirDrop users name. If the size of the file being transferred is large, then you can also cancel AirDrop during the transfer process, provided it has not completed already.

As soon as you tap on the name again the transfer will instantly stop. In case the transfer had already started, you will still be able to cancel it in the middle by tapping on wrong users name again.

Knowing this simple tip can be immensely helpful in avoiding accidental AirDrop transfers and enable you to cancel them in time.

    What Does This Mean

These findings come from the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany , where researchers sought to analyze the AWDL protocol, which Apple introduced in 2014. The full technical paper can be read here .

Five years later, Apple has yet to publish any significant details about how the networking technology included by default on all its devices works. TU Darmstadt noticed the lack of security research on AWDL and decided to take a look into the highly pervasive protocol.

“Considering the well-known rocky history of wireless protocols’ security, with various flaws being repeatedly discovered in Bluetooth, WEP, WPA2, GSM, UMTS, and LTE, the lack of information regarding AWDL security is a significant concern given the increasing number of services that rely on it,” the TU Darmstadt team said.

They partnered with academics from Boston’s Northeastern University to reverse-engineer the protocol and test it for vulnerabilities. While Apple’s ADWL contained some security features, the researchers managed to bypass them and successfully carry out staged attacks.

The researchers discovered they could intercept and modify device-to-device communication via AirDrop, permitting the injection of malicious files. They also found long-term device tracking possible, despite MAC randomization. Three denial-of-service attacks were also completed, crashing the Apple devices tested.
