iPhone 13 Pro Max Battery

iPhone 13 Pro Max Display

Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max Battery Test

There are three key changes to the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 13 Pro Max that are worth discussing: the smaller notch, a screen that refreshes at up to 120Hz and improved brightness when frolicking outdoors in the sunny sunshine.

The reduced size of the notch is the most obvious of the three, and while its welcome it doesnt really change a lot in terms of the iPhone design theres still a notch encroaching on your movies and games, where other brands are playing with smaller punch-holes and even completely invisible cameras.

That said, were not saying the notch is without its merits when you find that youre able to unlock your phone with your face from a surprising angle , you can forgive the need for multiple sensors to be wedged in at the top of the screen.

Wed like to see Apple miniaturize this a little more though, and get the cameras and sensors into the rim of the phone or at least let us see the battery percentage shown constantly, rather than having to swipe down. When we heard word of a smaller notch coming, we had hoped that the little beacon of battery life would be a constant option, but sadly no.

Apples 120Hz display technology is called ProMotion, and has been used on the iPad Pro range for years. Its surprising that its taken this long to appear on an iPhone, simply because the technology clearly exists within Apple, and because most rivals have had it on flagship and even some mid-range phones for a while now.

iPhone 13 Touchscreen Issues

Unlike battery problems, iPhone 13 touchscreen issues are relatively rare. However, they can make the device virtually unusable. There’s a chance you can fix it without sending it in for repairs, as it’s usually caused by software or user errors.

First, ensure your iPhone 13 is running the latest version of iOS. Next, thoroughly clean your iPhone and disconnect all cables. Restart your iPhone 13 and check if the touchscreen starts working again.

If it doesn’t fix the touchscreen issue, you can try factory resetting your iPhone 13. And, if all else fails, you’ll have to send your iPhone to Apple for repairs. But if you have the hardware expertise, you can take advantage of Apple’s Self Service Repair program.

Activation Error On The iPhone 13 And iPhone 13 Pro

One of the more frustrating iPhone 13 bugs involves activation problems. If you can’t activate your iPhone 13, you won’t be able to log in to use the phone at all.

This can happen in two ways. You’ll either get an activation error, a message stating that the phone can’t detect your SIM card, or that it’s invalid.

Fortunately, you can follow a few steps to solve the iPhone 13 activation bug. However, they’re pretty limited. Here’s one method you can try:

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Try activating your iPhone 13 again.
  • You can try an alternate method if these steps don’t solve the activation issue. For these steps, you’ll need the latest version of macOS or iTunes. Here are the steps you can try:

  • Update iTunes on your Windows PC. If you use a Mac, update macOS to the latest version.
  • Ensure your computer has an internet connection.
  • Use your iPhone 13’s charging cable to connect it to your computer.
  • Your computer should automatically detect your iPhone 13.
  • If Set Up as New or Restore from Backup notifications show up on your computer, your iPhone 13 is activated. If SIM card invalid or No SIM Detected notifications appear, you’ll need to reach out to your phone carrier.

But if you see the activation information was invalid message, you’ll have to enter recovery mode to restore your iPhone 13.

You’ll likely have to reach out to Apple or your phone carrier at some point during the activation process if you’re still running into errors after following these steps.

Specifically, battery capacity on the iPhone 14 Pro is 3,200 mAh compared to 3,095 mAh on the iPhone 13 Pro. Meanwhile, battery capacity on the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes in at 4,323 mAh.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Review: Battery Life And Charging

    • 12 hours and 16 minutes of battery life is among the longest lasting phones
    • Charging still stuck at 20W with no USB-C port

Now we come to one of the best parts of the iPhone 13 Pro Max review: battery life. Thanks to a larger battery and other enhancements, the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted a fantastic 12 hours and 16 minutes on the Toms Guide battery test, which surfs the web over 5G continuously at 150 nits of screen brightness.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max last year lasted 10 hours and 53 minutes and Galaxy S21 Ultra endured for 11:25. Anything above 11 hours is great, so the iPhone 13 Pro Max earns a spot on our best phone battery life list.

Head over to our iPhone 13 battery life results page to see how the iPhone 13 Pro Max compares to the other new iPhones and the best Android phones.

The news is not that great on the charging front, as the iPhone 13 Pro Max reaches just 50% capacity after 30 minutes using a 20W UBC-C charger, while other phones like the OnePlus 9 Pro and Xiaomi 11T Pro can get to 100% in 30 minutes or less. MagSafe charging, while convenient, is even slower at 15W.

The Display Gets A Promotion Finally

The specs of the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s display aren’t all that different than last year’s model, with one notable exception – Apple is at long last catching up with the high refresh rate trend. It got started in the Android world in late 2017 with the original Razer Phone, so 4 years later sounds about right.

Both sizes of the 13 Pro feature a 120Hz maximum refresh rate with granular dynamic adjustment between 10Hz and 120Hz, depending on content and activity. Apple calls this ProMotion.

The adaptive behavior is one of these things that are somewhat problematic to verify on Android and nigh impossible on iOS, so we’ll have to take Apple’s word for it. What we’ll say is that, indeed, the 13 Pro Max scrolls smoothly throughout the UI, more so than the plain 13 or older models.

There’s the matter that at this point not all third-party apps can fully utilize the 120Hz ProMotion feature but that’s going to improve as developers catch up.

The display diagonal of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the same 6.7 inches as last year’s 12 Pro Max. The resolution is the same as well at 1284x2778px, making for a 458ppi pixel density – the ‘Super Retina’ in its official name alludes to that. It’s also ‘XDR’ and that goes to indicate it’s HDR10 and Dolby Vision compliant, but more eXtremely so than, say, the similarly HDR-specced non-XDR iPhone X of old – read higher peak brightness.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Review: Video And Cinematic Mode

Mophie Juice Pack iPhone X/XS Battery $8.99
    • Cinematic mode steals the show with automatic focus and bokeh
    • ProRes support for more creative control

The Cinematic video mode on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is so good that youll feel like a mini Spielberg. Thats certainly how I felt after shooting several clips that apply a bokeh effect to your footage and automatically switch the focus to multiple subjects depending on whats going on in the frame.

In one video I recorded of a German Shepherd and Shepherd-Rottweiler mix, I appreciated how the iPhone 13 Pro Max automatically blurred out the dog in the background, resulting in a sense of depth, and I could change the focus point on the fly just by pressing on the display.

I also had fun with the Cinematic mode by having my son capture me walking along a trail and attempting a layup playing basketball. In both cases, the iPhone 13 Pro Max delivered a convincing bokeh with the video. Check out the video below to see how iPhone 13 cinematic mode works.

Unfortunately, the resolution for Cinematic mode is capped at 1080p across the entire iPhone range, so you cant have portrait mode videos and 4K quality at the same time.

No matter what you shoot, you wont be disappointed in the iPhone 13 Pro Maxs video quality. In this sweeping shot of the Manasquan river, everything from the sky trees and puffy clouds to the rippling water and swaying branches looks DSLR-like. However, I did notice a little noise as I zoomed in at 3x.

iPhone 14 Battery Capacities For All Four Models Revealed Ahead Of Launch

Apple does not advertise battery capacities for its new iPhone 14 lineup, but MacRumors has obtained this information from a Chinese regulatory database.

Three out of four iPhone 14 models feature larger battery capacities compared to the iPhone 13 lineup, with the exception being the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is equipped with a slightly smaller battery compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Battery capacities for the iPhone 13 lineup:

    • iPhone 13 mini: 2,406 mAh
    • iPhone 13: 3,227 mAh
    • iPhone 13 Pro: 3,095 mAh
    • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 4,352 mAh

Battery capacities for the iPhone 14 lineup:

    • iPhone 14: 3,279 mAh
    • iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325 mAh
    • iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200 mAh
    • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323 mAh

The same database accurately revealed battery capacities for all four iPhone 13 models and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro ahead of those devices launching last year. These exact battery capacities for all iPhone 14 models were also leaked in a post on Chinese website Weibo that was in June.

Apple says all four iPhone 14 models feature “all-day battery life.” iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max models feature up to one hour longer battery life for offline video playback compared to the equivalent iPhone 13 models, according to tech specs on Apple’s website, while there is no directly comparable model for the iPhone 14 Plus.

When To Replace Your Cell Phone

While repairing your phone when it has a problem may be a solution, there are times when it makes more sense to replace your cell phone. Here are telltale signs that you need to replace your phone.

    • Persistent Issues
    • Its possible to do a factory data reset, also called a hard reset, to restore most cell phones to default and software settings. Resetting your device will, in most cases, restore your gadget to full functionality especially if you had apps unexpectedly crashing or black screen. But if you notice that you are performing data reset more frequently, for example once every week so as to keep your phone operational, it might be time to trade it for a new one.
    • Battery Wont Hold Charge
    • Todays crop of smartphones usually comes with a permanent battery installed. To replace such a battery, you will need to use the services of a professional technician. But the batteries that come with these devices are often only designed to last for one year with normal use. In case your smartphone has a built-in battery, you probably need to weigh the cost of professional battery replacement vis-a-viz buying a new phone. Chances are that its more cost effective to replace your phone.
    • Generally, your phone repair technician will advise you on whether its better to just buy a new phone. Smartphone accessories like screens can be very expensive and you might just be better off replacing your phone.
