Originally launched in 2018, the iPhone XR was positioned as a lower-cost alternative to the iPhone XS that still offered the same internal processor and a sizeable 6.1-inch display.
The iPhone 11, on the other hand, is positioned as the “main” device of Apple’s 2019 lineup, with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max offering more power at a higher price point.
The iPhone XR retails for $599 for the base 64GB storage version, while the iPhone 11 is available for $699 for the same storage.

Apples lower cost model has latest chips and longer battery life but is identical on outside to predecessor
The iPhone 11 is Apples latest lower cost smartphone for 2019 thats clearly aimed at a broader market, offering most of what its top phones do but for £320 less.
Costing from £729, the iPhone 11 is also £20 cheaper than last years iPhone XR was on launch the phone it has now replaced.
In fact the iPhone 11 is identical on the outside to the iPhone XR in almost all the ways that matter. Its the same size and weight. Its got the same glass and aluminium design, same 6.1in LCD screen with rounded corners, the same large notch at the top and same thick bezels around the sides.
Flip it over and its got the same glass rear, except that iPhone is no longer written on the back and the Apple logo is positioned lower. The biggest difference is the new large, square camera lump in the top left corner, which on the iPhone 11 houses a new dual camera system.
The phone is well built, feeling extremely solid and it has the best LCD screen youre likely to see on a phone although it isnt as good-looking, colour rich, bright or high contrast as the OLED screens fitted to the iPhone 11 Pro or Apples many rivals costing £500 and up.

Performance Battery Life And Charging
The iPhone 11 comes equipped with Apples still-strong A13 Bionic processor. Its fast and powerful in fact, its up to 20% faster and 40% more power-efficient than the Apple A12 Bionic chip in the iPhone XR. That said, the XR still has enough power to satisfy most peoples needs. Both these iPhones can run the latest games and apps with ease.
Both phones have the same fast charging and wireless charging capabilities, but the iPhone 11 packs a 3,111mAh, as opposed to the iPhone XRs 2,942mAh cell. While the XR already had excellent battery life, the 11 goes just a little further, so were going to give this opening round to the newer phone.

Youd be forgiven for being unable to tell the iPhone XR and 11 apart. Pretty much the only major difference is the addition of the extra camera lens on the iPhone 11, and a selection of different colors. Dimensions, weight, build materials its all pretty much the same, and it makes this category a tough one to judge.
Thankfully, theres more to it than just looks. Physical durability across the two iPhones is similar, with aluminum and glass builds, so getting a case is the best way to avoid potentially costly repairs, but the iPhone 11 has improved water-resistance, sporting an IP68-rating thats superior to the iPhone XRs IP67-rating. That means it can be submerged in up to 2 meters of water for 30 minutes without damage whereas the iPhone XR can only handle depths of 1 meter. The iPhone 11 wins narrowly.

At first glance, there’s not a great deal to separate both devices. The front of both are dominated by the display, and each features the controversial “notch” at the top.
While the display isn’t quite edge-to-edge, the bezels aren’t huge, and each the dimensions of both are, in fact identical: they’re both 5.94-inches tall, 2.98-inches wide, and 0.33-inches deep with a weight of 6.84 ounces.
It’s worth noting though, that while the iPhone XR is IP67 rated , the iPhone 11 is IP68 rated, bumping its water resistance up to 2 meters.

In terms of specs, the iPhone SE and iPhone XR are equals in the camera department, but theyre not identical overall. Both phones feature a 12MP main wide camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a 7MP TrueDepth camera up front with an f/2.2 aperture.
In addition, both the iPhone SE and iPhone XR are capable of capturing portraits with both the front and rear cameras and let you adjust the Depth Control, so you decide how much of a bokeh effect you want. However, while the iPhone XR is limited to three Portrait Lighting effects, the iPhone SE ups that to six, including Stage Light, Stage Light Mono and High-Key Light Mono.
The iPhone SE also also benefits from the image signal processor thats unique to the A13 Bionic chip inside that phone. For example, you get a Smart HDR feature thats smart enough to recognize people and deliver better highlights to faces.

Perhaps the biggest difference that sticks out in my mind when comparing these two devices is battery life. You can get around 14 hours of browsing time on the iPhone 11, while the XR isnt far behind with an estimated 13 hours of browsing time on a charge. This really isnt a big difference, but it sets the stage for the theme of the rest of this article: how the iPhone 11 offers a slight improvement over the XR in many small ways, but without feeling like a totally new phone.
Another area where these phones are noticeably different is their camera systems. Its probably the only external feature that distinguishes one from the other: their rear camera bumps. When looking at the iPhone 11 vs XR side-by-side, youll notice right away that the 11 has an additional rear camera, which allows you to take epic wide-angle shots. The used iPhone 11 also comes with an improved night photography mode, which enhances pictures taken in the dark, even when youre not using a flash. You can also expect the 11 to have a slightly better portrait mode that blurs the backgrounds of portrait images.

There Are No 5g iPhones
Most major makers of Android phones have either released a 5G phone, or are planning to do so in the near future. Apple did not even mention the term 5G in its iPhone launch. This was no huge surprise. We have known for some time the first 5G iPhone will likely arrive in 2020, not 2019.
5G is not actually a particularly compelling prospect for most of us right now. You have to pay more for the contracts and most dont come with quite enough data to justify the extra speed. 5G is only available in a handful of UK cities. And we find 5G coverage to be very patchy, and speeds highly variable, even in the centre of London.
Nevertheless, upgrading to a 4G iPhone 11 may not be the wisest idea if you tend to buy one very high-end phone every 3-5 years. 5G will seem pretty mainstream in 2020-2021. Phone networks will do their best to make sure that happens too, as the infrastructure spend involved in 5G is huge.
