Yes. Once you clean out your Recently Deleted folder, all of the images will be permanently deleted from your device. If you want the photos gone forever, without anyone having access to even a recovery option, youll have some digging to do, though.

Youll need to check any photo storage apps on your phone. This includes iCloud photos , Google Photos, Dropbox, Shutterfly, your social media apps, and any other cloud-based service youve downloaded on your iPhone.

Assuming youve cleared the images from your device, iCloud, and other apps, there is no way to recover them.

How To Really Really Delete Your Photos

I have run into a situation that required even more drastic measures. At some point during restoring from backups and upgrading the operating system versions I ended up with several gigabytes of photos and videos taking up space on my iPhone that werent showing up in the Camera Roll, the Recently Deleted album, or anywhere else I could access on the iPhone itself. Apple tech support had me reset the phone and restore from backup, but that didnt solve the issue either.

Somehow, somewhere something had gotten corrupted. So before I restored from backup, I had to go into the backup file and manually delete the photos. I strongly urge caution in doing this because it might well be possible to royally screw things up if you make a mistake. As a minimum precaution, its worth making two backups so that you have a fallback if something goes wrong.

On a Mac, the backup files are in ~Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

There are also apps that I havent tried but that might make the process easier .

Sometimes you delete photos accidentally and need to retrieve them. The good thing is they are held for quite a few days in your Recently Deleted Album. To get your deleted photos back:

To Permanently Delete Photos from iPhone, you will have to first delete them in the Photos App and then Delete them once again in Recently Deleted Folder.

1. Open the Photos App on your iPhone.

2. Tap on Albums tab located in bottom menu and then tap on Recents Album.

3. On Recents screen, tap on the Select option located at top-right corner.

4. Select Photos that you want to delete and tap on the Trash can icon.

As mentioned above, the deleted Photos at this stage have only been moved to Recently Deleted Folder and not yet removed from your device.

To Permanently delete Photos from iPhone, you will have to remove them from Recently Deleted Folder.

1. Open Photos App and tap on Albums tab located in bottom menu.

2. On Albums screen, scroll down to Other Albums section and tap on Recently Deleted Folder.

3. In Recently Deleted Folder, tap on the Select option, located at the top-right corner.

Note: The number on Photos indicates the number of days up to which the deleted Photos will remain on your device and can be recovered.

4. Once you tap on Select, you will see Recover All and Delete All options in bottom menu. To Permanently delete Photos, tap on the Delete All option.

5. On the confirmation pop-up, tap on the Delete option to confirm.

This will permanently delete Photos from iPhone and they will no longer be available on your device.

Use An Alternate Icloud Account

Logging out of one iCloud account and using another iCloud account is a cumbersome workaround. But it’s possible to preserve your photos in iCloud while you delete them from the iPhone. Use Image Capture On A Mac

Every Mac has an app called Image Capture. It’s a handy tool to remotely scan documents and import content from a connected camera. Before you launch the app, connect your iPhone to your Mac and if prompted on your phone, trust the computer connection. Next, find and open Image Capture from your Mac’s application folder. Under the Devices option on the left side of the app you’ll find your iPhone listed — click it.

A message will show up in the app letting you know it’s loading your photos. This can take a while, depending on how many photos and videos you have in your library. I waited 45 minutes for my library to load. Just leave your iPhone connected to your Mac, Image Capture open and wait.

Once your library shows up, click on an item in the list and then press CMD+A on your keyboard. That will select all items and activate the trash icon at the top of the window.

You can also use a Windows computer to delete your photos.

How To Delete iPhone Photos From A Mac

You might find its easier to delete your iPhone photos from your computer. If youre a Mac user, this is quite a simple process, although both methods are only possible if you turn off iCloud Photos syncing.

When you delete photos and videos, they go to your Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, they’ll be permanently deleted.

If you use iCloud Photos, and delete photos and videos from one device, the photos and videos will be deleted on your other devices.
