The second-generation iPhone SE started at $399. As with the other 5G iPhones, however, that starting price has jumped $30 to $429. Youll be able to pre-order the phone on Friday, March 11, and it will ship and be available in stores a week later on March 18.
In other words, the new iPhone SE is essentially identical to the two-year-old model it replaces, but with a two-years-newer processor and everything that comes along with it. For those looking for the latest and greatest iPhone, its features will come up woefully short. But those more concerned with price and longevity will be thrilled, and thats a substantial market.

The iPhone SE can capture 4K video at up to 60 fps, and I put it to the test against the Pixel 5a shooting this footage of the Raritan Bay at a nearby park. The iPhone’s video is warmer and has more contrast, bringing out a bit more detail in the wood by the shore.
However, the Pixel 5a’s clip looks brighter, and as a result the white points of the waves look a bit crisper, as do the Canadian geese on the beach and in the water. The footage is a bit more washed out, but you can make out more detail in the rocks as I pan all the way to the right. While the iPhone SE’s zoom is more limited, the Pixel 5a’s is jumpy and quite fuzzy at the max level.

The iPhone SE is available directly from Apple in-store or online, as well as most major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and more, including your preferred cellular provider. However, if you are looking to purchase the iPhone SE unlocked, your best bet is direct from Apple, as most other retailers sell it carrier-locked.
There are three colors for the iPhone SE: Midnight, Starlight, and PRODUCT. You have three capacities to choose from as well: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and the price is $429, $479, and $579, respectively.
The iPhone Se Supports Sub
With no support for millimeter-wave 5G, the âiPhone SEâ will only be able to connect to sub-6GHz 5G networks. However, it will still offer faster data speeds than 4G connections, although nothing like the super-fast speeds advertised by carriers. With C-band support, the new iPhone SE will work with Verizon’s 5G ‘Ultra-Wideband’ networks, as well as the sub-6GHz 5G networks of AT& T and Sprint. These are much more widely deployed across the country, and while they are nowhere near as fast as mmWave, they are much more practical and are expected to form the backbone of the 5G networks for all carriers globally.
Another omission from Apple‘s iPhone SE is the 3.45GHz 5G network, which AT& T is widely deploying at many locations around the U.S. This was confirmed by the carrier to PCMag yesterday. According to the report, the device will still be compatible with AT& T’s C-Band network, which will be rolled out more widely before the end of this year. However, the C-Band, which was traditionally used for satellite TV since the 1970s, is currently restricted in many areas around the U.S., whereas the 3.45GHz band has no such restrictions anywhere.

Apples cut-price iPhone is back and has been upgraded for 2022, with a faster chip and 5G making it an even better bargain than before.
The third-generation iPhone SE costs £419 and is the cheapest smartphone Apple sells, priced to compete with myriad mid-range Android devices.
On the face of it, the iPhone SE doesnt look that tempting a proposition. There are cheaper smartphones available and it only comes with 64GB of storage. The 4.7in LCD display is bright, but cramped and markedly less crisp and vibrant than competitors. It is basically the same as the previous version from 2020 on the outside, which already looked extremely dated.
But while the phone may look decidedly old school on the outside, internally it is anything but. It has Apples latest A15 chip, which is the fastest on the block and the same one in the top of the line iPhone 13 Pro.
The phone is extremely responsive in use and will continue to be so for years. It runs the latest version of iOS and all the apps and games you might want, except Fortnite. It has 5G, wifi 6, Bluetooth 5, wireless charging, water resistance and all the things youd expect of a modern phone in 2022.
Use more 4G or 5G mobile data than wifi and battery life will be shorter but the iPhone SE should generally last about a day of use as long as youre not gaming for long sessions.

iPhone Se Review: Display
Lets just say that watching shows and movies on the iPhone SE is not exactly immersive. This 4.7-inch LCD panel has a resolution of 1344 x 750 pixels, so it’s not full HD, and it’s impossible not to notice the large bezels when watching movies and videos on this phone.
When watching the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer on YouTube, the iPhone SE did a fine job rendering the warm colors of Tatooine and concerned grizzled look of Ewan McGregor, but the black bars above and below the action proved distracting. I wanted to pinch-to-zoom to make the picture bigger.
One could argue that the Pixel 5a is for a different target audience with its 6.34-inch display, but you can’t ignore that you can get a much bigger full HD OLED screen for just $20 more.
Still, the iPhone SE ‘s display performed well in our lab tests. The panel registered 114.7% of the sRGB color gamut and 81.2% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space. That’s good, but behind the 119.3% and 84.5% turned in by the Pixel 5a. However, the new iPhone SE still wins on color accuracy with a Delta-E score of 0.21 the Pixel 5a scored 0.32.

Night Mode For Taking Better Photos In The Dark

Given the iPhone SE’s cheap price, I wouldn’t expect it to have a camera that’s on par with the iPhone 13 or even the iPhone 12. But if there’s one feature I would have appreciated, it’s Night Mode. Across the industry, smartphone cameras have gotten a lot better at taking photos in the dark. I hoped Apple’s low-cost iPhone would reflect this progress, too.
It’s possible that it would have been too challenging in terms of size and cost to include the iPhone 11’s upgraded wide camera sensor in the new SE. But Google has found a way to bring Night Sight to its similarly priced Pixel 5A with 5G… and considering the iPhone SE lacks a secondary ultrawide lens, the quality of the standard wide-angle camera is more important than ever.
That said, Apple says the iPhone SE should be able to take better videos in low light thanks to the A15 Bionic’s newer image signal processor. And the camera is getting other upgrades, such as the pixel-by-pixel Deep Fusion processing technique.
Overall, the new iPhone SE reiterates the different ways Apple and Samsung view what matters most in a budget smartphone. Samsung’s cheaper phones usually have more camera lenses, sharper selfie cameras and larger screens. Instead of those, Apple’s iPhone SE gets the latest mobile processor, which should hopefully keep the phone feeling relatively fast for years to come.

Apart from Apples A15 Bionic chip, one of the main selling points of the iPhone SE 3 is 5G support. Indeed, this affordable phone can take advantage of 5G networks if you live in a supported region. If you dont meet all of the 5G requirements, then your iPhone SE 3 will fall back to 4G . This iPhone supports the following bands: n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n25, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n66, n71, n77, n78, and n79. In case youre wondering, Apple doesnt sell a 4G variant of the iPhone SE 3. Even if you dont plan on using 5G networks, you will have to buy the 5G model as its the only one available. Same Camera Lens New Smarts
The 2022 iPhone SE features a primary 12-megapixel lens on the back, and thats unchanged from the second gen. With Apples A15 Bionic chip inside, this lens works with a new image signal processor that speeds up shooting photos or recording videos and adds in new processing modes . Both arent necessarily evident but lead to clearer images and let the SE better identify what youre trying to capture in a shot.
All of this works to make this 12-megapixel a sharpshooter. Youll need to work to set up a shot right, though given that its only a wide lens, if you want to capture more, youll need to move back physically. And while it has digital zoom, wed recommend physically getting closer to an object to avoid blur. Its quick to shoot, generally able to capture a photo in under a second for most conditions.
The iPhone SE can still shoot Portrait mode with a single lens, but its just for people. That means no photos of pooches, cats or inanimate objects. It still performs well on the SE, and its gotten better at figuring out when to start the effect on. There is a noticeable improvement over shots from the second-gen SE, and the latest iPhone SE is on par with the Pixel 5a with 5G for these shots.
The latest iPhone SE is quicker at identifying the focus to be ready to capture an image within an instant. Processing is faster than the second generation, but coming from an iPhone 8 or even an original iPhone SE will deliver some pretty big boosts.

The iPhone SE is Apples budget-friendly iPhone and pairs an older design with newer hardware. The third-generation iPhone SE is now up for preorder and continues this working formula.
Its now $429 a slight price bump over previous models in an identical build with a home button and just a single camera lens. But its upgraded on the inside with a newer processor and support for 5G. And Ive spent six days with it to see who needs to upgrade and determine who the budget iPhone is for.

Just A Little Different
The previous iPhone SE launched in April 2020, which was a very weird time for the world in general and for me in particular. My neighborhood in Queens was the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US, and I felt like I was living in the middle of a world-changing disaster. In that context, the then-$399 iPhone SE was the perfect phone. The idea of spending $800 or more on a cell phone during an economic downturn when you might need that money for, say, basic daily necessities, was laughable. I wrote then: A few months ago, our economy looked capable of supporting $1,200 smartphones, from both Apple and Samsung now, we have an unemployment rate of over 20 percent.”
The Starlight color is really just a fancy way to say white
But 2022 is not 2020. We aren’t back to the Before Times , but we aren’t in a bewildering crisis either. The new iPhone SE, however, is still pretty much the same phone it was two years ago.
Case in point, the 2022 iPhone SE is exactly the same size as the 2020 model, at 2.65 by 5.45 by 0.29 inches . It weighs a little more , but I didn’t notice the difference in handling it.
