Should I Upgrade To iPhone 12

iPhone 12 Vs iPhone 1: Charging And Magsafe

iPhone 13 Pro – Should you upgrade from the 12 Pro?!

The bad news is that Apple does not include a charger of any kind in the iPhone 12 box. Apple did this to help reduce waste and help the environment. Instead, you get just a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box.

Fortunately, Apple has made it easier than ever to recharge your iPhone, despite making you pay extra for a charging brick. The $39 MagSafe charger offers 15W wireless charging, and it’s easy to snap the charger on your iPhone 12 because it uses magnets.

MagSafe is not particularly fast, though, with our testing figures confirming that the battery level was at just 39% after 30 minutes of charging. You can also opt for a $19 20W wired charger that should get you to 50% in in 30 minutes.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 8 8 Plus And Older

If you still have the iPhone 8 series or an even older Apple phone, its probably time for an upgrade. The four-year-old iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were the last Apple flagships to feature the classic iPhone design with large bezels and the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are tiny by todays standards, with the iPhone 13 Mini being the best option if youre hoping to maintain the same overall footprint.

Youll get much better performance with the new phones. The displays are far improved, particularly if you splurge on the iPhone 13 Pro models that feature a 120Hz refresh rate. And while the iPhone 8 cameras were excellent for their time, youre missing all the latest hardware and software features available on the newer phones. You also dont get 5G support.

It’s no surprise that the iPhone 13 series is better than the iPhone 8 lineup in every way.

The one thing you dont have to worry about is the software package itself. Every iPhone going back to the iPhone 6S series is eligible for an upgrade to iOS 15 and most of its new features, except those that rely on hardware. However, while Apple does a great job optimizing its software for older phones, you might start to see some sluggishness with the iPhone 8s A11 Bionic processor and 3GB of RAM.

Its not surprising that the iPhone 13 series is better than the iPhone 8 lineup and older iPhones in every way. If youre looking to upgrade, now is a great time to do so.

The Cheapest Way To Get A Great iPhone Experience

The iPhone SE has a faster processor than you might expect in such a comparatively inexpensive phone, as well as a good cameraand it costs half the price of the iPhone 13. Its low price, small size, and Touch ID fingerprint reader make it an easy upgrade for people who have older iPhones or for anyone wanting to spend less, but its battery doesnt last as long.

Buying Options

The iPhone SE is the ideal choice if you want a small phone, prefer a fingerprint reader to Face ID, or simply dont want to pay as much for a new smartphone as you would for a decent laptop. The iPhone SE is significantly cheaper than the iPhone 13 but in many situations feels just as fast. It lacks the iPhone 13s second, ultrawide lens and Night Mode camera setting, so capturing good photos in dark environments is harder. If you use your phone for more power-hungry activities like games, video, or voice or FaceTime calls over LTE, the smaller battery may not last all day. However, whereas cheap Android phones often stop getting software updates soon after purchase, even the least expensive iPhones, such as the SE, will receive iOS support for many years.

The Need For 5g Speed

5G wireless isn’t available everywhere and its capabilities have been a little overhyped. That said, the iPhone 12 was the first iPhone compatible with 5G. So if you have a burning desire to connect to 5G cellular networks and have access to one, then the iPhone 12 will scratch that itch immediately. Of course, the iPhone 13 also links to 5G, so opting for either would fulfill your 5G desires.

Living with a damaged iPhone screen is never fun.

iPhone 12 Pro vs 11 Pro: Should You Upgrade?

All iPhone 13 models are equipped with a new video recording feature called Cinematic mode that automatically switches focus between subjects. This makes the video shot by the iPhone more aesthetically pleasing, more like a movie. This is a useful feature for those who often use iPhone to record videos.

Apple shared that Cinematic leverages the power of the new A15 Bionic processor, but in the past it has brought similar features to older iPhones through software updates. It is not clear if Cinematic will be updated for iPhone 12 or not.

The wide-angle camera on standard iPhone 13 models is also improved for better light capture. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini also inherit the image stabilization technology by shifting the sensor of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple also introduced a new feature called Photographic Styles, which allows users to apply certain options to a scene in an image. Apple says the feature is different from a filter because it can apply appropriate adjustments to ensure elements like skin tone are accurately preserved.

As usual, the biggest camera improvements will be on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. Now all three cameras of the iPhone 13 Pro duo have Night mode. iPhone 13 Pro is also updated with the ability to shoot macros at a minimum distance of 2cm, ProRes video recording feature and all the camera features of the iPhone 13.

Smaller Lighter And More Durable

The travel implications are obvious here having a lighter, more compact device without compromising capability is definitely a pro for anyone who uses a smartphone on the road. The base iPhone 12 sports the same display size as the iPhone 11, in a device thats 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter, with an OLED panel that offers far superior picture quality.

Theres an even smaller version, too! The iPhone Mini is the most compact 5G phone available, with the same functionality as the iPhone 12, just with a smaller display. The iPhone 12 models are also more durable than their predecessors, with up to four times better drop performance than the iPhone 11.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone X

Apple’s iPhone X.

You can feel confident about upgrading to the iPhone 13 if you have an iPhone X. This phone launched in 2017 and is falling behind in big ways when it comes to speed, battery life and camera features.

Let’s start with the performance. The iPhone X runs on a much older A11 Bionic chip that’s now four years old, while the iPhone 13 Pro runs on Apple’s new A15 Bionic processor. That new processor is way ahead of the A11 chip, which only has a two-core neural engine compared to the A15 Bionic’s 16-core neural engine.

The iPhone’s neural engine is what powers tasks that rely on machine learning and artificial intelligence, which is increasingly becoming a bigger part of the iPhone experience. Things like app suggestions in the App Library and Apple’s Translate app rely on machine learning to function, which indicates that the iPhone X may struggle to keep up with newer capabilities.

The iPhone X also has a dual-lens camera similar to that of the iPhone XS, meaning it’s missing the iPhone 13’s new features in addition to Night mode, Deep Fusion and the ability to control depth and blur levels in Portrait mode. Like the iPhone XS, you’re only getting a 7-megapixel front camera compared to a 12-megapixel selfie camera on Apple’s newer phones.

And of course, there’s the benefit of getting 5G support, more storage space, a refreshed design and the option to use MagSafe accessories on the iPhone 13.

iPhone 12 Vs iPhone : Why You Should Upgrade

ByJordan Palmerpublished 19 May 21

Here’s how much the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini improve upon the older iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Chances are if you’re mulling over an upgrade to an iPhone 12, it’s not from a recent model like the iPhone 11 or even the iPhone XR. Given how long people hold on to their phones these days, we’d wager there are more than a few people still on the iPhone 8, but contemplating a change from their nearly four-year-old phone.

If so, we have some good news. This is a great time to upgrade your iPhone, as the models released last fall are widely available and well reviewed. Even better, there’s no new iPhone launches expected before the fall, when the iPhone 13 should make its debut. In other words, buy one of the best iPhones now, and you’ll get a very up-to-date model.

But exactly how big a leap forward can iPhone 8 owners expect from the iPhone 12? To find out, we’ve run an iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 8 comparison, matching up the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini against the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Here’s what you’ll discover should you make the switch to a new phone.

Magsafe And 5g Probably Wont Change The Game For You

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 8: Should You Upgrade?

Theres no doubt that 5G will be important, but its not there quite yet. If youre wondering whether you should buy the iPhone 12, or wait for the iPhone 13, dont make your decision based on 5G. The iPhone 13 will also offer 5G support, and by then, 5G networks may be a little more robust. Until then, youre not really missing out by staying on 4G for another year

The same is true of MagSafe. Its arrival on the iPhone 12 is only the start of a new ecosystem of accessories and the system will still be available on later models. For now, accessory makers are still figuring out how to take advantage of MagSafe, and in a year or two, that ecosystem will probably be a lot more compelling.

Should You Upgrade To The iPhone 12

If you already own an older model, you’re probably wondering whether it’s time to upgrade to the iPhone 12. We’re here to help you decide not only if it’s time for a new iPhone, but which model is your best option.

2020 is a big year for the iPhone. Its not only Apples first major upgrade since the iPhone X, the iPhone 12 also marks the company’s first lineup of 5G phones. With such a big change, youre likely asking yourself if its time to upgrade. The answer is: It depends. Weve put together a handy guide to help you figure out which old iPhones are worth upgrading, and which still have some life left in them.

The iPhone SE, released earlier this year, is a perfectly capable smartphone and Apples most affordable offering. If you own one, you probably either like getting a deal or you like the phone’s small form factor. Either way, theres no reason to update just yet.

If you simply can’t wait, however, we recommend the iPhone 12 mini, which will bring you 5G connectivity, an OLED display, all nice upgrades from what you get with the iPhone SE.

Wifi Bluetooth And U1 Chip

The iPhone 12 models include the same Apple-designed U1 chip that was first introduced in the iPhone 11 lineup. The U1 chip enables Ultra Wideband technology for improved spatial awareness, allowing the iPhone 12 models to precisely locate other U1-equipped Apple devices.

Apple has likened Ultra Wideband to “GPS at the scale of the living room,” because the technology is designed for improved indoor positioning and location tracking.

The U1 chip allows the iPhone 12 and 12 mini to precisely locate nearby AirTags. It’s also used for directional AirDrop and interaction with the HomePod mini, which also has a U1 chip.

As for Bluetooth and WiFi, the iPhone 12 models support Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi 6, the newest and fastest WiFi protocol.

All Of The iPhones Apple Sells Are Very Capable Devices But This Is The One You Should Get

If you haven’t already pre-ordered an iPhone 13, there’s a pretty good chance that you’re not entirely sure if you need one at this point. That’s fair, especially since a lot of people are perfectly happy with the iPhone they have, even if it’s a few years old. If you currently have an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 will be a better device, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth it.

If your device is older , you’ll probably see enough of an improvement across the board to make it worth the upgrade. That’s especially true this year, when both Apple and carriers have a number of promotions that can get you a nice discount on a new device.

In that case, the biggest question is which iPhone you should get. Here’s what you need to know:

iPhone X: Consider Upgrading

Apples iPhone X felt revolutionary at the time. Its was the companys first phone with FaceID, as well as the first iPhone with an OLED display. And it still feels pretty current now, so casual iPhone X users can definitely hold off another year or so before upgrading.

If your iPhone X is starting to feel a little long in the tooth, however, go for the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 mini. Both will get you 5G support and much faster processors. Once again, smartphone photographers and videographers will want to look at the iPhone 12 Pro.

Colors Storage And Pricing

The iPhone 13 is available in five different colors: midnight, starlight, blue, red, and pink. The iPhone 12 is available in six colors: black, white, red, green, blue, and purple.

In terms of pricing, the iPhone 13 retails for:

  • $799 for 128GB of storage
  • $899 for 256GB of storage
  • $1,099 for 512GB of storage

Meanwhile, Apple today sells the iPhone 12 for:

  • $699 for 64GB of storage
  • $749 for 128GB of storage
  • $849 for 256GB of storage

New Features For The iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 comes with a few brand-new features that the iPhone 12 lacks. The new iPhone is the first to boast a 120Hz display and an option for 1TB of storage for its Pro models. Right now the iPhone 12’s screen has a 60Hz refresh rate. The faster refresh rate will translate to smoother, snappier scrolling through apps and websites.

Apple gave the iPhone 13 an enhanced camera system. All four of the iPhone 13 models have an improved 12-megapixel main camera and a better ultrawide lens and sensor. The new hardware paired with the phone’s A15 Bionic chip means a handful of improvements and new features, including being able to capture 47% more light. The iPhone 13 also features a new cinematic mode to make your videos appear more film-like, and the Pro and Pro Max models will gain the ability to capture ProRes videos later this year.

I Just Want An iPhone That Works Well With The Latest Software

iPhone 13 Pro Max vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Should You Upgrade?

Most iPhones are supported and continue to receive software updates for four or five years and should remain functional for at least that long. There are plenty of people happily using their iPhone 7 or 8, and some using older versions than that.

If your main goal is to have an affordable device that works well with iOS 14 and all of the latest apps, and you aren’t interested in features like 5G, I recommend the iPhone 11 . The A13 processor inside is faster than anything in any mobile device that isn’t the iPhone 12 series. By the way, that processor is in the iPhone SE also, though the smaller display means some apps won’t function quite the same .
