There’s been a lot of hubbub around the internet about the iPhone 12’s USB-C-to-Lightning cable and Apple’s decision to leave out a charging brick. On the one hand, the charging port on the iPhone 12 itself is Lightning, so any Lightning cable, USB-C or USB-A, will work with it. On the other hand, with no charging brick included in the box, there is going to be a percentage of people in the world that will open the box and be very confused because they won’t understand how they’re supposed to charge the iPhone without a power adapter.
Whether you have a USB-C power brick or not, whether you have a Lightning-to-USB-A cable lying around somewhere , whether you have a Mac or iPad that you could plug it into to charge, this is still a confusing situation for a certain number of people.

iPhone 12 Design And Display
The iPhone 12 looks strikingly different from its immediate predecessors everyone will spot youve got the new model. Thats down to a flat screen instead of the pillowed display of the iPhone 11. The edges are also flat instead of curved. Its reminiscent of the iPhone 5 design in some ways, so its unmistakably an iPhone. Of course, unlike the iPhone 5, the front is all-screen, with a notch at the top for the True Depth camera.
The flattened edges, together with noticeably slimmer bezels around the edge of the display, mean that the new iPhone has a smaller footprint than last years iPhone 11, 15% less volume, Apple says, though it matches the screen size of 6.1 inches.
Actually, the screen size remains the same but everything else changes. First, this is an OLED screen, not the LCD technology used on the iPhone 11. This is the first time this high-end screen has been used on an entry-level iPhone. OLED offers brighter colors, inkier black shades and better contrast levels.

First up: the less expensive phones, starting with the smallest iPhone 12 of the bunch.
If there ever was a smartphone to describe as cute, it would be the $700 Mini.
It fits comfortably in the palm of my hand, and people with small paws will have no trouble swiping and tapping away on the 5.4-inch display. By comparison, the display on the $800 iPhone 12 measures 6.1 inches diagonally.
If you’re debating between the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, keep in mind that those phones include largely the same hardware, with the notable exception of their batteries. So on many levels, we expect them to function equally well.
If you look at it that way, the choice is simple. If you want a larger but not huge iPhone while saving money where you can, buy the iPhone 12, which costs $200 less than the iPhone 12 Pro.
And if you’re looking to save even more and aren’t particularly worried about screen size, buy the 12 Mini and save an additional $100.
But if you’re looking at smaller iPhones, how about the iPhone SE, introduced earlier this year? That phone is just $400, a steep savings from the $700 it costs to get an iPhone Mini.
Here, quickly, are the differences. To start, the Mini feels sleeker and more sophisticated. Beyond aesthetics, the screen on the Mini is significantly larger than the 4.7-inch display on the SE, even though the iPhone SE is actually the slightly bigger device.
iPhone 12 Review: Dolby Vision Video
The camera isn’t the only big update on the iPhone 12. This year, Apple added support for Dolby Vision for video recording. If you’re not familiar with Dolby Vision on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, it basically means that the camera is better equipped to balance color and shadows when you are shifting through different lighting backgrounds. Dolby Vision sort of takes apart every frame, gives it a little editing tweak and then stitches it back together. That’s a really dumbed down and short version of what’s happening, but it’s all most people really need to know.
It’s been difficult to really get a good test run of this new feature during the pandemic, so I don’t have a lot of solid testing to go by, but from my limited testing with my cat and some interesting colored lighting, I’m going to give this a thumbs up in terms of impressive video quality. Like the camera itself, I’ll be going more in-depth with comparisons between this, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro.

iPhone 12 Mini: One Size Fits All
Of all four new iPhones, the $699 iPhone 12 mini has by far the easiest sales pitch: It’s tiny. At least, it’s tiny relative to other modern iPhones. Its 5.4-inch edge-to-edge display will fit in any pocket or adult-sized hands and that’s without sacrificing visual quality. Despite its diminutive size, Apple still gave it a Super Retina display with HDR, and more peak brightness than last year’s iPhone 11.
