iPhone iOS 14: How to View Cellular Data Usage

The mobile data that your cellphone uses to access the internet when you are away from a Wi-Fi connection is known as mobile data. You won’t be charged for making or receiving phone calls, as well as sending and receiving text messages. Megabytes and gigabytes are the two unit of measurement for data usage.

Once your iPhone is setup to measure Cellular Data Usage in a billing cycle, it is really important that you get into the habit of regularly monitoring the amount of data being used on your iPhone.

At any time, you can check the amount of data used by your iPhone by going to Settings> Cellular> on the next screen, you will see the amount of Data Used under Cellular Data section.

On the same screen, you can also see the Apps using Cellular Data on your iPhone.

If any App is consuming excessive data, you can simply toggle OFF Cellular Data for that particular App by moving the toggle to OFF position.

Which App Is Using All My Data

Its time to dive in and discover which app is using so much mobile data. Fortunately, since the release of iOS 7, Apple included a helpful tool to help us get to the root of the problem. Head to Settings -> Cellular, and well find lots of helpful information that should help us figure out which app is sending or receiving so much data.

The setting youll see first allows you to turn off Cellular Data entirely, which you may want to do to avoid a hefty phone bill if youve already exceeded your monthly data allowance.

Next, youll see Cellular Data Options. Tap on it, then tap Voice & Data. Here youll see a helpful hint: Using LTE loads data faster.

It also uses mobile data faster. If youre trying to conserve data, you might want to try going without LTE for a while but I cant guarantee this will fix your problem. I recommend you keep reading before you decide whether or not to turn off LTE.

Next, scroll down to the Cellular Data Usage section. Theres one piece of this section that might be confusing: When you see statistics about Current Period, the Current Period listed here does not correspond to your iPhones billing period with your carrier.

On your iPhone, Current Period displays the amount of data youve used since you last reset the data usage statistics on your iPhone. Ill show you how to do that in a little while. If you already know how, dont reset your statistics yet, or we might end up deleting some helpful information.

Disable Background App Refresh

RELATED:How to See Which Apps Are Draining Your Battery on an iPhone or iPad

Since iOS 7, Apple has allowed apps to automatically update and download content in the background. This feature is convenient, but can harm battery life and cause apps to use cellular data in the background, even while youre not actively using them. Disable background app refresh and an app will only use data when you open it, not in the background.

To control which apps can do this, head to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. If you dont want an app refreshing in the background, disable the toggle next to it. If you dont want any apps using data in the background, disable the Background App Refresh slider at the top of the screen entirely.

Disabling push notifications can also save a bit of data, although push notifications are rather tiny.

Fetch Mail Less Frequently

How to Check Data Usage on an iPhone or iPad

Check to see how frequently your email account is set to fetch new mail — the less frequently it fetches, the less data you’ll use. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data. First, make sure Push is turned off if you want to save data and don’t need new emails pushed to you constantly. Next, see what the schedule is for Fetch at the bottom of the screen. If you choose Manually, then the Mail app will check for new email only when you open the app.

Changing your Fetch schedule could save data, as well as your phone’s battery life.

To make the task of tracking storage consumption on iPhone and iPad a straightforward affair, iOS presents a pretty neat storage section that breaks down the consumption for users to know how much each category has captured. The colored section of each category can determine the amount of space each one of them has occupied.

If you are wondering what the System Data section includes, you should know that it comprises everything that doesnt fall in the bracket of the predefined categories. According to Apple, the storage category consists of non-removable things such as offline translation languages, fonts, dictionaries, Siri voices, logs, cache, local keychain data, CloudKit Database, and more. Long story short, its a cluster of a variety of miscellaneous data that exists on your iOS device.

Note: Its worth noting that System Data was previously called Other Data. People using iOS 14 or earlier can still find the previous name. If you are one of them, you can check out our detailed guide on how to clear other data on iPhone.

iPhone iOS 14: How to Reset Cellular Data Usage

Streaming music or podcasts for long stretches when you are away from Wi-Fi can quickly add to your data usage. Most music and podcast apps let you restrict streaming to Wi-Fi only, which will then force you into the habit of downloading playlists or podcasts before playing them instead of streaming them over cellular data. Let’s look at Apple Music and Apple’s Podcasts apps as examples.

For Apple Music, go to Settings > Music. In the Streaming & Downloads section, you’ll see two settings if the first is enabled. The first, Use Cellular Data, lets you disable streaming via a cellular connection entirely. If that’s too drastic a measure for you, then you can leave that setting enabled and turn off High Quality on Cellular to stream songs at a lower bitrate when you aren’t on Wi-Fi.

You can control how the Apple Music app uses data here.

For the Podcasts app, go to Settings > Podcasts and turn off Cellular Data. You can also enable Only Download on Wi-Fi to prevent podcast downloads from adding to your data usage.

Why Do iPhones Use So Much Data

iPhone users are the heaviest data users because the average amount of time they spend using add-on apps on iOS is longer than users on Android. iPhones come with a higher specification for media playback, which encourages increased internet data consumption for the best user experience.

Moreover, iPhone users consume more data than others because browsers on other operating systems have limited capabilities or are more efficient in presenting the information.
