Agree To Continue: iPhone 11

How to master the Camera App on iPhone 11 & iPhone 11 Pro!

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it contracts that no one actually reads. Its impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But were going to start counting exactly how many times you have to hit agree to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people dont read and definitely cant negotiate. Were starting with the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, which will serve as our baseline.

To use an iPhone, you have to agree to:

  • The Apple terms of service agreement, which you can have sent to you by email
  • Apples warranty agreement, which you can have sent to you by email

These agreements are not negotiable, and you cannot use the phone at all if you dont agree to them.

The iPhone also prompts you to set up Apple Cash and Apple Pay at setup, which further means you have to agree to:

  • The Apple Cash agreement, which specifies that services are actually provided by Green Dot Bank and Apple Payments, Inc, and further consists of the following agreements:
  • The Apple Cash terms and conditions
  • The electronic communications agreement
  • Apple Payments, Inc, license

If you add a credit card to Apple Pay, you have to agree to:

  • The terms from your credit card provider, which do not have an option to be emailed

Final tally: two mandatory agreements, six optional agreements for Apple Cash, one optional agreement for Apple Pay

It will come as no surprise that the iPhone 13 outperforms the iPhone 6, and this is where we see some of the starkest differences. The iPhone 8 is closer in quality and has a color profile that’s actually quite similar to the iPhone 13, but it’s still a clear difference in lower lighting conditions.

With the iPhone 11 Pro, it’s harder to see the improvements in photos with bright, even lighting, but the iPhone 13 does a much better job with lights at night and also with texture. The Deep Fusion feature that kicks in primarily with indoor lighting makes a big difference in texture quality.

The iPhone 11 Pro has some haze issues that tend to affect most photos, and it’s more noticeable at night and in the afternoon when the sun is low. Earlier iPhones had a lot of trouble with accurately exposing different areas with uneven lighting, and Apple has made a lot of improvements in this area over the last few years.

The iPhone 13 excels with color accuracy, including skin tones, outperforming all of the older iPhones. It’s also fantastic at HDR, and everything is super sharp, even when lighting is less than ideal.

Want to see higher resolution versions of our comparison photos to get a closer look at the differences? We’ve uploaded them here, and make sure to watch the video for the full comparison. Let us know in the comments what you think and whether the iPhone 13 is worth upgrading to.

iPhone 11 Pro Max: September 20 2019

Apple’s largest and most expensive phone of 2019 was the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The display was Apple’s Super Retina XDR, as with the 11 Pro, but sized at 6.5-inches. The Pro Max featured the same, three-lens camera setup as the 11 Pro, as well as the same color choices, making size nearly the only difference between the devices.

Low Lighting And Night Mode

In lower lighting conditions, there are more noticeable improvements in the photos coming from the iPhone 12 Pro, again thanks to the A14 chip and LiDAR Scanner. Night Mode photos capture more detail, are sharper, and are just a bit more vibrant.

Night Mode photos can also be taken with the Ultra Wide lens for the first time, for impressive night time wide-angle shots, and LiDAR brings much faster autofocus in poor light.

iPhone 11 And Deep Fusion

How much zoom does the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro camera ...

And that brings us to the iPhone 11. It bolsters the wide-angle with a yet another bigger sensor for better light sensitivity, and 100% Focus Pixels. The telephoto has been brought to f/2.0, so it can capture 40% more light as well.

A new, effective 13mm, 120º ultra-wide-angle has also been added the mix, as has a new Night Mode, and a new technology called Deep Fusion, currently in beta.

The ultra-wide-angle doesn’t have any Focus Pixels or OIS, and is 5-element instead of 6-element, so there are limits to what it can do, but it can provide depth data, allowing for real portrait mode on the 11 and Portrait Mode on both the wide-angle and telephoto on the 11 Pro. There’s a new virtual lens model for the wide-angle to better match our expectations rather than just physical calculations, and high key mono for Portrait Lighting.

Also, semantic rendering, so it can better understand what’s in a scene and what to do with it, and multi-scale tone mapping to make Smart HDR even smarter, especially when it comes to skin.

You should just be able to whip out your camera, take a photo, and get the best damn photo.

Up to three cameras telephoto, wide-angle, and ultra wide-angle, and three different capture methods Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, and Night Mode can make the iPhone 11 camera system just sound well complicated. But the way Apple has implemented it just wipes a lot of that complexity away.

So, let’s break it down.

Is It Worth Upgrading From Your Current iPhone

All of the new iPhone 11 models have superb cameras. But is it worth upgrading from your current iPhone?

It really depends on which iPhone you currently own.

Do you have the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 7, or earlier? If so, youll be blown away by all of the latest iPhones.

Do you have the iPhone XR? This iPhone only has a single Wide lens. So youll notice a huge difference by upgrading to any of the new iPhones.

If you have the iPhone XS or XS Max, you already have the Wide and Telephoto lenses. If you dont think youll use the Ultra Wide lens, you might not want to upgrade right now.

But if you like the idea of shooting extreme wide-angle photos, youll want to upgrade to one of the iPhone 11 Pro models.

If you just go for the iPhone 11, then youll lose your telephoto lens.

But its not just about the number of lenses. There are all of the other new iPhone camera features that might sway you into upgrading.

For example, do you shoot a lot of night or low-light photography? Then Night mode will be of huge benefit to you.

Do you shoot a lot of Portrait mode photos? If so, you might like the idea of the new Portrait Lighting options.

Deep Fusion will dramatically improve your medium to low light photography. And the improved Smart HDR means you can capture amazing detail in high-contrast scenes.

Theres also the added benefit of improved battery life in these new iPhones.

The battery in the iPhone 11 Pro Max lasts up to 5 hours longer than the iPhone XS Max.

With 512 MB memory, it was equipped to handle a lot more than even the iPhone 3GS, which only had 256 MB of memory. Enhanced Portrait Mode & Portrait Lighting

iPhone Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting have been around for a few years. But Apple has added a few improvements to the iPhone 11 models.

This is perfect for portrait photos of people.

But with the iPhone 11 models, you can now take better portraits of animals too.

In fact, you can use it to blur the background in any kind of photo.

The Portrait Lighting feature has also been improved.

When you take a photo using Portrait mode, you can add a Portrait Lighting effect. There are a number of options that create different studio lighting effects.

On the iPhone 11 models, theres a new Portrait Lighting effect called HighKey Light Mono. This allows you to create a stunning black and white studio-style portrait with a white background.

But heres the big update to Portrait Lighting on iPhone 11:

You can now adjust the intensity of the Portrait Lighting effect.

This gives you more control over the look and feel of your photo. And you can tone down the effect for more natural results.

Portrait mode is available on all three iPhone 11 models. However, youre going to get better results on iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.

Why?

Because these iPhones have the 2x Telephoto lens. And a telephoto lens lets you capture more flattering close-up portraits.

So if you like to use Portrait mode, youll definitely want the iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max.

iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera Specs

  • 12 MP, f/1.6, 26mm , 1.7µm, dual pixel PDAF, sensor-shift stabilization
  • 12 MP, f/2.2, 65mm , 1/3.4, 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS, 2.5x optical zoom
  • 12 MP, f/2.4, 120, 13mm , 1/3.6
  • TOF 3D LiDAR scanner

As you can see, the camera tech on the Pro and Pro Max look kind of similar. But on closer inspection, you will see that the Pro Max has the iPhone 12 Pro beaten in almost every regard.

It has larger sensors, bigger apertures, and far more advanced zoom capabilities. And these are all things that experienced, more professional camera users will notice. Heres what Apple said about the iPhone 12 Pro Maxs camera at launch:

Everything else is the same, however, save for the display size and the battery. Again, the iPhone 12 Pro Maxs is bigger in both contexts. If you can handle the price, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the one to go for: it delivers the best of everything and has the best camera by a considerable margin.

iPhone 11 Review: An iPhone Xr With A Better Camera

Apples lower cost model has latest chips and longer battery life but is identical on outside to predecessor

The iPhone 11 is Apples latest lower cost smartphone for 2019 thats clearly aimed at a broader market, offering most of what its top phones do but for £320 less.

Costing from £729, the iPhone 11 is also £20 cheaper than last years iPhone XR was on launch the phone it has now replaced.

In fact the iPhone 11 is identical on the outside to the iPhone XR in almost all the ways that matter. Its the same size and weight. Its got the same glass and aluminium design, same 6.1in LCD screen with rounded corners, the same large notch at the top and same thick bezels around the sides.

Flip it over and its got the same glass rear, except that iPhone is no longer written on the back and the Apple logo is positioned lower. The biggest difference is the new large, square camera lump in the top left corner, which on the iPhone 11 houses a new dual camera system.

The phone is well built, feeling extremely solid and it has the best LCD screen youre likely to see on a phone although it isnt as good-looking, colour rich, bright or high contrast as the OLED screens fitted to the iPhone 11 Pro or Apples many rivals costing £500 and up.
