Save Shsh Blobs So You Can Restore Later

Those are the only two official ways to downgrade to previous versions of iOS. You can either downgrade from a beta version to a stable version, or downgrade to the previous stable version during a short window where the old IPSW files are still signed by Apple.

But, if a version of iOS is signed by Apple, you can use a tool to capture that authorization to run the previous version of iOS in the form of SHSH blob files. These are device-specific digital signature files that control which versions of iOS can run on a device. Once youve received that authorization for your device, you can keep those files and restore that old version of iOS at any point.

For example, if youre using an older version of iOS with a jailbreak available but you want to play with the current version, youd want to get local copies of those SHSH blobs before upgrading to the current version. This way, you can then downgrade to the older, unsigned version and continue using your jailbroken software.

You can use TinyUmbrella and possibly other tools to create local copies of these SHSH blobs. Afterwards, you can use it to force iTunes to restore older IPSW files.

Apple doesnt really want you running a previous version of iOS on its devices. Apple might occasionally let you downgrade to a previous version of iOS if theres a big problem with the latest version, but thats it.

    Restore Using An Ipsw

Apple only allows you to load signed firmware images, or versions of iOS, onto its devices. Apple generally stops signing the previous version of iOS a few days after a new version is released.

This means that its often possible to downgrade back to your previous version of iOS for a few days after you upgrade assuming the latest version was just released and you upgraded to it quickly.

To do this, youll need an .ipsw file. These may be stored on your computer if you used iTunes to upgrade to them, but theyre regularly deleted to free up space. Youll probably need to download the IPSW file from a website like IPSW.me. Remember: You can only restore iOS images marked as signed. If the version of iOS you want to restore is marked as unsigned, you just cant restore it.

Once its downloaded, connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer and open iTunes. Click over to the devices page in iTunes.

On a Mac, hold down the Option key and click the Restore iPhone or Restore iPad button. On a Windows PC, hold down the Shift key and click the Restore iPhone or Restore iPad button. Youll see a file browser dialog browse to the downloaded .ipsw file and double-click it to restore that specific version of iOS to your device.

  • Why Wont My iPhone Update?
  • Every time Apple releases a new update, they introduce new features, bug fixes, security patches, and other optimizations. So, updating your iPhone will actually make it faster and more secure. Thats one reason you should update your iPhone regularly. Heres how to update your iPhone manually and automatically, and what to do when your iPhone wont update properly.

Apple Usersheres Why You Should Always Manually Update Your iPhone

Many peoplemyself includedcare about iPhone security. Thats why security-conscious iPhone users enable the option for automatic iOS updates.

But you might have noticed that despite having automatic iOS updates enabled, your iPhone takes days or weeks to upgrade to the latest operating system. Why is this?

This was the subject of a question asked via email by iPhone user Mateusz Buda, who wrote to Apples VP of software engineering Craig Federighi and shared the reply via Reddit.

In his reply, Federighi explained how the iPhone maker incrementally rolls out new iOS updates by first making them available for those that explicitly seek them out in Settings, and then 1-4 weeks later ramp up to rolling out devices with auto-update enabled.

In other words, according to Federighi, Apple likes to wait for any bugs to be reported and ironed out before pushing iOS updates to devices. Theres another obvious reasonby ensuring everyone isnt updating their iPhones at once, it avoids overloading Apples servers each time an iOS upgrade is issued.

Important Read Before You Downgrade Ios

To reinstall an iOS update, you’ll need to download the previous software version on your computer, restore your iPhone to factory settings, load the downloaded software on your iPhone, then restore your data from a previous backup. Because of this process, there are a few important points you need to consider before making the decision to uninstall the latest iOS:

    • You will lose any data from after your latest iOS update. This is because a later version backup cannot be used after you downgrade to an earlier software version. While you can still use an earlier backup, you will still be losing some data.
    • Apple Watch users might lose some functionality. If youve already installed the latest watchOS on an Apple Watch, you may not be able to fully use your wearable after downgrading your iPhone software. This is because there is no way to downgrade your watchOS, and this may cause incompatibilities.
    • Make sure the previous software version is still signed by Apple. If the software version is no longer signed, Apple has stopped supporting the iOS version and you cannot downgrade. To quickly check this, go to ipsw.me and select your device and desired software version to see if the iOS is still signed. Note: All iOS 14 versions and iOS 15.0 have been unsigned by Apple, so you can no longer downgrade your iPhone software to these versions.
