New York Subway Completes Rollout Of Apple Pay Support
After suffering substantial delays, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority has completed its rollout of Apple Pay support to all buses and subway stations in the city via its OMNY contactless fare payment system.
With the OMNY contactless payment system, riders are able to hold an iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless reader to pay their fare with no authentication necessary, allowing for speedy passage through public transit hubs.
OMNY tap-and-go fare payments with Apple Pay Express Transit support became available at one of New York City’s major transportation hubs, Penn Station, back in , followed by a number of other stations in early 2020. The rollout was originally intended to continue, but installation of the new digital readers was paused in late March, delaying completion until December 2020.
The New York installation has now been completed network-wide, according to an OMNY announcement.

At this time, OMNY only works for individual rides and it is not yet possible to pre-pay for an unlimited ride pass. MetroCards, which predate the OMNY system, will continue to work on subway and bus systems until 2023, when it will be fully replaced by OMNY.
Apple Pay Can Now Be Used At All Manhattan Subway Stations And Buses
Contactless payments will reach the rest of New York City by the end of the year.

You can now use your iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for a ticket to ride in New York, with the contactless payments capability added to all subway stations and on all buses in Manhattan. It will be made available across the rest of New York by the end of 2020, the New York Metro Transportation Authority said Tuesday.
You can now find OMNY contactless fare payment readers at all 151 subway stations in New York and on the more than 800 buses on the island. Just tap your Apple or Android device against the reader and you’re good to enter.

“We are excited that anyone traveling within Manhattan can now pay their fare for subways and buses using OMNY,” said Al Putre of OMNY. “Not even a global pandemic can hold us back.”
All 472 New York subway stations are set to have the OMNY system by the end of the year. They’ve so far been added to Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, with Queens and Brooklyn stations to come next.
The MetroCard will continue to coexist with OMNY until 2023, although cash purchases will remain available. According to the MTA, use of OMNY has risen by 95% over the last six months.
Transfer Your Physical Transit Card To Your iPhone
If you receive an error, such as No card detected or Could not add card:
- If your iPhone has a case, take off the case or remove any metal that might come between your iPhone and your physical card.
- Make sure that the top of your iPhone is resting on your physical card and remains still.
- Check with your transit agency to see if your physical card can be transferred.
After you transfer your physical card to the Wallet app, your physical card might no longer work.

How Does Omny Work
All riders have to do is hold a contactless bank card or a smartphone mobile wallet up to the new card readers installed at turnstiles to enter the subway system.
Other forms of payment are also in the works, including an MTA app and an OMNY card. The MTA expects to offer mobile ticketing via the OMNY app in 2020. The card will make its debut in 2021.

Using An iPhone Is Great Using An Apple Watch Is Better
Paying with an iPhone via Apple Pay worked great. We haven’t tried using Android yet, but we will next trip, and we know it in similar fashion.
That said, I could see myself using the Apple Watch more regularly when carrying other things in both my hands, or rolling a suitcase with my phone in my pocket.
As long as you follow these directions, you won’t have to double tap the Side Button: Open the Watch app on your iPhone > tap the My Watch tab > Tap Wallet & Apple Pay > then tap Express Transit Card > Select your card and authenticate with your Apple Watch with your passcode.

A Guide To Omny The Mtas New Metrocard

In 2019, the MTA launched a pilot program of its new tap-to-pay system, known as OMNY, that will eventually replace swiping a MetroCard. In the more than year since its launch, OMNY has steadily expanded across the city and has been used more than 10 million times by New Yorkers and tourists from 130 counties. The system started with 16 subway station on the 4, 5, and 6 lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn between Grand Central-42 Street and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center riders have also been able to try out OMNY on all Staten Island buses since the systems launch.

New York City has completed its rollout of the One Metro New York mobile payment system, which includes support for Apple Pay across all subway stations and in buses.
New York City subway riders know the frustration of seeing “Insufficient Fare” flash on the turnstile as their train pulls into the station, forcing them to top up at the kiosk and miss their ride. Mobile payments have eased that burden for some riders, and now there’s another payment option there: Apple Pay.
Apple Pay is now accepted at all subway stations and in buses across New York’s five boroughs 15,000 OMNY readers at 472 stations and 5,800 buses. It’s part of the MTA’s One Metro New York payment system, which is on track to replace plastic MetroCards by 2023. Though some stations have been testing Apple Pay since 2019, the feature is now available at every location, AppleInsider reports.
The OMNY system works with contactless cards and smartphones or devices like smartwatches. Users can pay for individual rides via Apple Pay, though there is no way to purchase unlimited monthly or weekly passes just yet. MTA will add more fare options this year and next, and Metro North and LIRR are expected to receive OMNY in 2022.

I got to demo the MTA’s OMNY system the exact minute it went live to the public. It was, of course, a little bit late.
Its noon launch actually happened at 12:19pm ET, and it slowly spread to all of the Grand Central turnstiles. I dashed for the first one that lit up to test it out.
Late or not, seeing OMNY work without a hitch once the system was online was impressive. MTA workers overseeing the project were visibly excited .
London, Chicago and other cities already have contactless systems like this installed , so New York is late that different, too. Like we said, the transition is long overdue for the biggest transit system in the US.
Will Omny Have Unlimited
Roughly one in every six New York City subway and bus fares are now paid through the MTAs tap-based OMNY system, transit officials announced Tuesday. Riders who rely on unlimited seven or 30-day passes must still use MetroCards, as the OMNY system is only able to accept single-ride fares for $2.75.

Use Apple Pay To Travel New York
Apple Pay was first trialled as a payment method for transportation at selected subway stations more than 18 months ago. That rollout process has now been completed, meaning that it’s possible to pay for your transport using your iPhone or Apple Watch with the tap-and-pay OMNY system installed throughout the network.
“OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all buses, allowing you to tap and go throughout New York City,” said MTA in a statement. “You can use OMNY with your own contactless card or smart device. OMNY currently supports a full-fare, pay-per-ride option for now, including free transfers.”
While Apple Pay and other contactless options are accepted throughout subway stations and the bus system, they can only be used for purchasing individual journeys. That means that there is no equivalent of the unlimited ride MetroCard pass just yet.
In a Friday press conference, MTA executive director Al Putre said that the next aim is to bring OMNY to New York rail lines, along with increasing functionality so that it matches the MetroCard pass.
The MetroCards will continue to hang around until 2023. By then, MTA will entirely replace them with its OMNY system.
