How To Measure Someone’s Height
To measure a person’s height with a LiDAR scanner:
- Open the Measure app on your iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, or iPad Pro.
- Keep the person in view of the camera and make sure their entire body is visible.
- Wait until a line appears above the person’s head indicating the height measurement.
- Press the “Shutter” button To take a picture of a person’s height.
- Click Done Once finished. Choose between Save to Images or Save to Files.
Move to a well-lit location, avoid dark backgrounds and reflective surfaces, and make sure the person’s face is easy to detect to get an accurate measurement. The measurement will start immediately as soon as someone is detected. You can use it to measure a person sitting or standing.
If your device can’t detect the person, try stepping back a bit. You will also see prompts on the screen to move away or get close.
If you want to repeat the measurement, just focus the device somewhere else to re-measure.

Measure A Rectangle And Calculate Its Area
1. With the Measure app open, position your phone in front of the object and move until the plus + icon appears at the bottom.
2. A dotted line will appear around the object.
3. Tap the plus+ icon and the measurements of the entire rectangle will appear automatically.
4. You can save a photo of this measurement, too.
One caveat about this function: it can take several tries to get the app to return the right dimensions. The angle of your phone can affect the reading, and distort the measurements. Always measure twice.

How To Use The iPhones Measure App As A Level
You can use your iPhone to measure, but did you know you can also use it to check if something is level? This functionality has been in iOS for some time, and it always blows my mind that this is possible and that it actually works!
To start with, open the Measure app. It will open to the Measure tab by default, but you can select Level at the bottom of the screen.
There are two ways to use the level feature. First, you can place your iPhone on its back, lying down on the object. This way you will have two bubbles on your screen the further apart they are, the greater the angle. The bubbles also tell you which way you need to adjust something to make it level. The bubbles move left, right, up, and down to help you fine-tune the object position. When its finally level, the bubbles overlap completely to form a circle, your screen turns green, and theres also haptic feedback.
The second way to use the level is to turn your iPhone on its side. This gives you a black block overlaid on white background. If your device isnt standing at a 90° angle, then the black will cover more or less of the screen. The black area is also angled to show you what angle your device is at, and it displays this information on the screen, too.
Just like the other function, the horizontal level goes green and uses haptic feedback when your iPhone is level.
So now you know how to measure things and you can assemble them accurately using your iPhone !
Measuring Up: The Ios 12 Measure App
Apple brings augmented reality to your phone with Measure, the first native AR app in iOS 12.
Apple’s Measure app is visually compelling for sighted users, but also reasonably accessible for blind users. This blog describes taking measurements as a blind or low vision user, and enumerates improvements for Apple’s consideration to make the app easier to use.
Keep in mind the Measure app is not available on all iOS devices. According to Apple Support, you must have an iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, iPad , or iPad Pro. The app installs with iOS 12 on any supported device.

How To Find Individual Measurements
To find the distance between two objects or make individual measurements, wait for a white circle to appear and point your camera at the corner you want to start measuring. A white dot in the middle of the circle will grow larger, and there will also be some haptic feedback when it has found the best place for you to start measuring the same will happen with the endpoint as well.
As you move the phone, a yellow dotted line will appear and you will start to see the measurement in real time. At the endpoint, just tap on the end or tap on the plus sign at the bottom of the screen. The plus sign will not only mark the end of the measurement but will also begin a new measurement so you can continue whatever work youre doing.
After completing each individual measurement, further measurements may shift a bit as you move around the item, so you want to keep an eye out for any misalignment and inaccurate dimensions.
In the upper left-hand and right-hand corners of the app, theres a back arrow along with the option to clear. If youre taking separate measurements and want to delete one without erasing all of your work, then tapping the back arrow will only get rid of your most recent measurement. If you want to erase all the measurements, tap the Clear button.
How To Take Multiple Measurements
Tap the Undo button to remove the most recent measurement, or tap Clear to start over.
* Additional measurements must start or end somewhere along an existing measurement. Otherwise, all previous measurements are replaced by the newest one.

Measure A Single Dimension Of An Object
1. If you don’t have the Measure app, download it from the App Store. It’s made by Apple, so it should be the first to appear when you search “Measure.”
2. Once downloaded, open the app.
3. You’ll see a box and an instruction to move your phone around.
4. Move your phone until the AR technology gets its bearings. When that happens, you’ll see a circle with a dot in the center.
5. Move your phone until the dot appears on top of the spot you want to measure from.
6. Tap the plus + icon near the bottom of the screen.
7. Move your phone slowly until the dot appears above the end point of your measurement. You’ll see a dotted line to help you keep your measurement on track.
8. When you reach the end point, tap the plus + icon again. Your measurement will appear, showing how much distance there is between the two points you set down.
9. If you didn’t get the start and end points lined up just right, you can fiddle with the measurement. Put your finger on the endpoint you want to move, and move your finger to reposition the dot.
10. To save an image of your measurement, tap the circle toward the bottom-right side of the screen. This saves a photo to your phone.

How To Use Your iPhone As A Ruler

Since iOS 12, your iPhone has included an app called Measure that you can use to accurately determine dimensions. You can use it to see how long something is, and you can also use it to calculate the square footage/square metres of objects. In a nice touch you can see how tall someone is simply by getting their whole body in the viewfinder.
Your accuracy will depend on what version of iPhone you have. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have a LiDAR scanner that makes the Measure app more accurate on those devices. We’re also expecting this feature to be available on the iPhone 13, too.

Where Is Your Measurement Saved
If you take a measurement of an object on the Measure app, the measurement will be displayed on the screen. You can save your measurements by tapping on the Copy button on the screen.
When you copy a measurement, its value is saved on your iPhones clipboard. You can later access this value by opening any text field on any app and then pasting the contents of your clipboard.
The Measure app also allows users to capture a photo of the object along with its measurement. The photo that you click using the Shutter button inside the Measure app will be accessible inside the Photos app.

How To Use Your iPhone Or Android Phone As A Ruler
ByCarrie Marshalllast updated 10 August 21
It’s surprising how often we need to measure things. Whether it’s tracking the kids’ heights or working out if thing X will fit in space Y, the ability to measure things with our phones is really useful.
Both iOS and Android enable you to point your phone at things to see how big, small, long or far away they are, and they can also do useful things such as help you calculate the area of an object or dimension. In most cases the apps use augmented reality to map what your camera sensor sees, overlaying measurements and lines on whatever you point your phone camera at.
Before we start it’s important to stress the limits of smartphone measuring apps. No matter how good the phone or how clever the app, it wont deliver 100% accuracy: weve found with the iPhone 12 Pro and its built-in LiDAR scanner that the accuracy is just over 95% in most cases.
Like most measuring apps, Apples Measure is not designed for precision measurements: while weve found it to be pretty accurate for measuring physical objects and the odd child, its not as accurate as the laser measures or good old-fashioned tape measures that professional tradespeople use.
If you need accurate measuring for your job or project, a laser measure with Bluetooth connectivity is a better option. For everything else, read on.
