What Is Homekit On iPhone

Can A Homekit Home Hub Be Used To Talk To Non

Everything New with HomeKit in iOS 13

No, setting up a HomeKit home hub does nothing to change the compatibility of various smart home products nor does it negate the need for a manufacturer-specific bridge device .

Though smart home products have been around for a relatively short time, there’s been a lot of change in the industry and there are many different, competing, and complementary technologies and platforms. Some devices use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, others rely on Zigbee, and newer products are adopting Thread. Plus, manufacturers have to develop their products for different platforms like HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa if they want to offer support.

It’s a problem that the Connectivity Standards Alliance has set out to resolve with the new Matter smart home standard, but that unifying connectivity standard is still a little ways off. In short, adding a HomeKit home hub to your home right now simply gives you a little extra functionality within HomeKit for the devices that already support HomeKit.

What About Homekit Security

HomeKit data is stored encrypted on your iOS, iPadOS and macOS devices. As all communication is direct between devices, data doesnt pass through third-party servers or go into the cloud. All communications are also encrypted, which makes HomeKit exceptionally secure.

If you have a HomeKit Secure Router, then you can add an extra layer of internet security to your HomeKit devices, even preventing them from communicating with the internet. You can find out more in our guide to HomeKit Secure Routers.

How Much Does Homekit Cost

The Apple Home app itself is free, but you’ll need to pay for the smart devices you’ll set up if you don’t already own them. On the less expensive side, a single iHome iSP6X Control Smart Plug costs $27, and on the other end of the spectrum, a Brilliant home controller costs $299.

Depending on how big your home is and whether you want to control your lights, temperature, locks, security cameras and other devices, you could easily break the $1,000 mark. Plus, you’ll need an Apple TV, HomePod or iPad if you want to be able to control your smart home remotely or set up advanced automations.

How We Test The Best Homekit Devices

When reviewing the best HomeKit devices, or any smart home device for that matter, we look at a few things before assigning it a rating. We also compare each of the gadgets within their individual category to see how the devices features stack up relative to its price range.

How simple is the device to install? We look at the ease-of-setup, making sure that the devices dont cause any unnecessary headaches before they even work. With that, we gauge performance. Does it actually work as advertised? Is its app easy to use, with a sensible layout?

Price and value are also factored into our testing. How expensive is it when compared to similar devices? While this isn’t the most critical criteria, it is considered in its final rating.

    How Does Homekit Communicate

Some HomeKit devices are connected to your hub via your Wi-Fi connection. Others need to be in Bluetooth range of your hub, which can be tricky if you want to control devices that are more than 30 or so feet away. In that case, you may want to get a Bluetooth range extender, such as the Elgato Eve Extend or the ConnectSense Bluetooth Extender, which act as Bluetooth-to-Wi-Fi bridges to broaden your devices’ Bluetooth range.

If you have a spare iPad of nearly any make or model, you can mount it on a wall and use it to control your HomeKit devices. Here’s how.

It would be an expensive job buying, say, a 12.9-inch iPad Pro just so you could have a touchscreen light switch in your den. But if you already have a spare iPad, even one of up to a few years old, then it’s better to get some use out of it than not.

And you can get excellent use by turning that iPad into a dashboard. Mount it somewhere handy, and have it always show you useful information, ranging from a clock to providing HomeKit buttons.

There are many different apps you can use when you get to deciding what information or controls to display, but whatever your needs, you have the same considerations for the hardware.

    What Does Homekit Do

Is Apple HomeKit the right Smart Home for you | IOS 14 Tour & Demo

HomeKit is the ecosystem behind controlling your smart home, rather than a product itself. Essentially, HomeKit is what makes your smart home tech work, not the actual smart home devices.

You’ll find HomeKit built-in directly to iOS. The main place you’ll find HomeKit is in the Home app. This is the app you’ll find on all iOS or iPadOS devices that lets you control any smart home devices you have connected. Any HomeKit supported smart devices, the Home app, and any HomeKit features show Apple’s Home logo.

It lets you turn devices on and off, manage settings, and use any other controls the device supports. HomeKit also controls any schedules or automations on your devices, such as turning off at a certain time. Although, you’ll need an Apple Home Hub for these to work when you’re not at home.

You’ll also find HomeKit built-in to Siri and HomePod devices. This lets you ask Siri on any Apple device, including HomePods, to control your smart home devices. For example, you could yell out to Siri to turn off the lights. HomeKit is the technology that lets Siri turn off the lights.

The other side of HomeKit is in your smart home device. HomeKit supported devices have a special QR code you can scan for a quick set up. It also powers the smart technology inside the device that lets it turn itself off. Essentially, HomeKit will handle the functionality of your smart home device.

It’s Not Enough To Just Have An iPad

True, you could prop an old iPad up on your desk and it could be quite useful. But to make a true dashboard, you need to mount that iPad on the wall.

That immediately means three things. You have to decide what wall it would be best on, then physically affix it to that, then run power to it.

It’s obviously up to you where you mount the iPad dashboard but you’re not going to pop it up in a guest bedroom. Have it by your front door, have it in your living room, or have it in your kitchen.

Choose a point in your house or office where you will be able to see what it shows you. And choose a point where you can and will tap buttons on it.

If you have to get up to cross your office to press a button to turn on the lights, you’re not going to do that. You’re just going to use Siri.

Im An Android User What Can I Do With Homekit

In a word: Nothingat least not with your smartphone.

HomeKit works only with the Home app, and the Home app is only available on iOS devices. And theres probably no hope that this will change any time soon.

    Mentioned in this article

Now, as described above, if you use Android and a device supports HomeKit, that does not mean you cant use the device with your phone. You simply wont be able to use HomeKit to set it up and manage itunless you do it on an iPad. Instead, Android users should have no problem using the brands official smartphone app to set up and manage the product.

What Are Scenes And How Do You Create Them

HomeKit lets you create custom scenes that will trigger a number of devices at the same time. These scenes can be activated automatically at a set time, or when certain conditions are met.

For instance, at bedtime, you can set HomeKit to lock your front door, turn off all of your lights and lower your thermostat to your ideal sleeping temperature. Or, if you have a motion sensor hooked up, you can also set lights or other connected devices to turn on or off when motion is detected in a certain area of your home.

    Homekit Secure Video Security Cameras

Smart security cameras used to be an area where Apple was miles behind its rivals, but today there are dozens of HomeKit compatible security cameras from Arlo, Netatmo, Logitech, Eufy and more. Plus, some of these work with HomeKit Secure Video.

The feature changes the way video cameras work with HomeKit, making it not only a way to view live footage but also a way to store recorded footage as part of your iCloud plan. It also brings extra HomeKit features, such as smart alerts, facial recognition and activity zones.

Secure Video brings peace of mind that your footage won’t be seen by prying eyes as when footage is captured, it gets encrypted end-to-end and is then fired into the iCloud, where it will stay securely. Once there, only you and anyone you invite to view will be able to see it.

In the app you can also turn on notifications for any doors, locks, and sensors in your HomeKit home, a sort of de facto security system. The app is also where you go to add any accessory and to set up scenes and automations .
