iPhone 13 Pro Max Review: Verdict
The iPhone 13 Pro Max is that rare phone that gets a 5-star rating from us. You get superior cameras and video recording capabilities including the very compelling Cinematic mode and macro mode blistering performance and a very responsive 120Hz display. Plus, the battery life is even better this time around and among the best weve seen from a 5G flagship.
I also appreciate the slightly better 3x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the brighter screen and the slightly smaller notch. But I wish Apple could deliver faster charging, and Id like to see a sleeker design next time around with the iPhone 14 with less of a camera bump and perhaps full-screen look.
Some may simply prefer the iPhone 13 Pro because its smaller and lighter, as there are no other functional differences between the two handsets. But if you prefer a bigger screen, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the closest thing to perfect you can get in a phone.

As of right now, Apples latest iPhone is the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 range, including the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. As you can see from the table above, Apples iPhone 13 is pretty much exactly the same size as the iPhone 12 it is slightly thicker, however, to accommodate larger batteries.
The only difference with the iPhone 14 series is that there will not be an iPhone 14 Mini instead, this phone will be replaced by the iPhone 14 Plus. This phone will have the same size display as the Pro Max model, 6.8in, but it will have the same spec as the entry-level iPhone 14.

Truedepth Camera And Face Id
For biometric authentication purposes, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max use Face ID, the facial recognition system that was first introduced in 2017. Face ID components are housed in the TrueDepth camera system in the display notch, which is smaller this year.
Face ID is used across iOS tasks for unlocking the iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming app purchases, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.
Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras. A Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin to create a 3D facial scan that maps the curves and planes of each face, with the scan read by an infrared camera.
The facial depth map is relayed to the A15 chip where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to authenticate identity. Face ID works in low light and in the dark, and with hats, beards, glasses, sunglasses, scarves, and other accessories that partially obscure the face.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Problems And Issues
Thus far iPhone 13 owners have encountered a few problems. For example, some iPhone 13 users are finding that the phone won’t unlock with an Apple Watch, though a fix is on the way. In addition, some iPhone 13 owners are complaining about the touch display not being responsive enough in some cases, which could be an iOS 15 issue.
On the iPhone 13 Pros in particular, there are complaints that the cameras are automatically switching between lenses without warning, and Apple has rolled out an update that will enable users to turn this off. And the ProMotion displays on the iPhone 13 Pros are not running at 120Hz with some apps , which Apple will be addressing in an update. Of course, developers need to optimize their apps as well.

Display: Only iPhone 13 Pro And Pro Max Have 120hz Refresh Rate
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models both feature a 120Hz display. The number of hertz a phone screen is rated for refers to the number of frames per second it can display, which determines how fast and smooth the screen feels when you’re scrolling through apps and web pages. The standard and Mini models, however, don’t feature the 120Hz display.
Apple seems late to the game, since other high-end smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 9 Pro, already have a 120Hz refresh rate.

Using Face Id With A Mask
When wearing a face mask, users can enable an “Unlock with Apple Watch” feature for convenience. Unlock with Apple Watch allows iPhone users to take advantage of an unlocked and authenticated Apple Watch as an alternative authentication measure to unlock their device when wearing a mask. It can’t be used to authenticate Apple Pay or App Store purchases, and it can’t unlock apps that require a Face ID scan.
In iOS 15.4, Apple added the ability for Face ID to work with face masks, with no need for an Apple Watch for authentication. Apple says that the feature can “recognize the unique features around the eye” for authentication purposes. If you opt to use this feature during setup, you will need to rescan your face for Face ID. From there, Face ID will be able to unlock your iPhone even when you’re wearing a mask.
Apple warns in the Settings app that Face ID is “most accurate” when it’s set up for full-face recognition only. For Face ID with a mask to work, you must be looking at your device to get it to unlock, and it does not work when wearing sunglasses. Face ID with a mask can authenticate Apple Pay payments and it can be used in lieu of a login and password in apps that support Face ID, unlike the prior Apple Watch Face ID feature.
The new feature is only available with the iPhone 12 or newer. iOS 15.4 has not yet been widely released to the public and is currently in beta testing.

But when it comes to resolution, the Pixel 7 Pro packs in 512 pixels per inch, making it sharper than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s display, which has 460 pixels per inch. Last but not least, the iPhone’s display is protected by a Ceramic Shield Layer, whereas the Pixel 7 Pro features Gorilla Glass Victus on the front.
Google and Apple have equipped their latest flagships with their best chipsets ever. While the Pixel 7 Pro comes with the Tensor G2 processor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has A16 Bionic inside. Comparing benchmark scores from Geekbench, Apple’s A16 Bionic crushes the Tensor G2, which should make a difference while doing graphic-heavy gaming or video editing tasks. However, in day-to-day usage, both smartphones can handle multiple apps while being battery-efficient simultaneously hence, users don’t have to worry about performance on either of the smartphones.

The display gets a 120Hz refresh rate, but there’s still an unsightly notch that interferes with movies. Performance is great thanks to the A15 Bionic SoC. You can choose betweeen 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage options. The main new features are camera-related: Cinematic Mode and Photographic Styles. The camera hardware has also been improved, compared to the previous generation. You can now take macros and the optical zoom goes up to 3X. Although incredibly expensive, the iPhone 13 Pro Max represents the best of the best in the iPhone lineup.

Battery: The iPhone 13 Has Better Battery Life Than Before
Apple says the new iPhones sport longer battery life than the iPhone 12 lineup. The extended battery life results from a combination of a bigger battery, iOS 15 and the A15 Bionic chip, according to Apple.
It says the iPhone 13 and iPhone Mini hold a charge for 17 and 19 hours of video playback, respectively. The iPhone 13 Pro is said to live for 22 hours, and the iPhone Pro Max for 28 hours.
Apple doesn’t disclose exact battery specs for its iPhones, but a teardown by iFixit reveals significantly more capacious cells than in 2020’s models. Notably, the iPhone 13 Pro has a smaller battery than the iPhone 13, apparently because the Pro’s screen uses less energy.

iPhone 14 Vs iPhone X
The iPhone X is about 5 years old, which means it probably feels slow and its battery life isn’t what it used to be. With an iPhone 14, you’ll notice a major upgrade in both categories, as well as design, improved durability, connectivity and camera quality.
Let’s start with performance. The iPhone X runs on a much older A11 Bionic chip that’s now 5 years old, while the iPhone 14 runs on Apple’s A15 Bionic processor. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max run on Apple’s newer A16 Bionic chip. Both new processors are way ahead of the A11 chip, which only has a two-core neural engine compared to the A15 Bionic’s 16-core neural engine.
