Unpairing Your Apple Watch

If any insurmountable problems do arise, unpairing and repairing your Apple Watch may be the only course of action. Luckily, this usually solves a lot of them:

  • Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and has Bluetooth turned on.
  • Keep the watch and phone close to each other throughout the unpairing process.
  • Open the Apple Watch app on your phone.
  • Tap All Watches, then find the watch you would like to unpair.
  • Tap on the i symbol next to the watch, then select Unpair Apple Watch.

Importantly, Apple recommends that you remove any transit cards stored in the Wallet app on your Apple Watch before unpairing it. You can do this by heading to the Apple Watch app on your phone, then My Watch tab > Wallet & Apple Pay> Express transit cards.

How To Pair Your Apple Watch

To pair your Apple Watch, youll need an Apple Watch Series 3 or later running watchOS 7 and an iPhone 6s or later updated to iOS 14.

Put the watch on your wrist. Then, simply follow the steps below:

  • Turn on your Apple Watch by pressing and holding the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Hold your iPhone up to your watch and, when the pairing screen pops up, tap Continue.
  • Alternatively, you can also connect your Apple Watch with your iPhone by opening the Apple Watch on your phone and tapping Pair New Watch.
  • Tap Set Up for Myself and follow the instructions on-screen to pair the two devices.
  • Then, all you need to do is hold your iPhone so that your watch appears in the viewfinder and continue to follow the setup instructions on-screen.

So, what if your Apple Watch is having a hard time pairing? If you see a watch face when youre trying to pair, it means your watch is already connected to another smartphone and youll need to reset your watch to pair it with another phone.

If you want to conserve your existing Apple Watch set up on your new iPhone, follow these steps.

1) Create a backup of your Apple Watch set up. To do so, you first have to go to the Watch app on your iPhone, then tap on your watch at the very top. Tap the i icon next to your watch, and finally, select Unpair Apple Watch.

Unpairing is the only way to create a backup of your Apple Watch. All contents and settings will then be backed up to your iPhone.

The next step is to backup your iPhone itself. You can do so either using iCloud backup, in which case, your Apple Watch backup will automatically be part of the iPhone backup.

You can also choose to do a backup of your iPhone using iTunes, or Finder on macOS Catalina and later. If you choose that option, make sure to tick the Encrypt iPhone Backup option before backing up your iPhone.

2) Once you have unpaired your watch from your old iPhone and backed up that old iPhone, you can grab your shiny new iPhone and go through the set up process. Make sure to set it up from backup, and not as a new device. You will be offered to set up your new iPhone from the most recent backup we just did in step 1 above. Choose that back and continue on with the set up process.

Restoring an Apple Watch is a lengthy process so you will have to be patient. After an hour or so, your Apple Watch should be all ready to go, and so should your new iPhone.

    Matt Elliott

Matt Elliott, a technology writer for more than a decade, is a PC tester and Mac user based in New Hampshire.

This blog post should first serve as a public service announcement: Before you sell, erase, lose or otherwise divest yourself of your current iPhone and move to a new iPhone, Apple Watch wearers should unpair their Apple Watch from their old iPhone. • How To Use Your Apple Watch With Multiple iPhones

So you love your Apple Watch. And maybe, for some reason, you have two iPhones. It could be that one’s your personal phone, and one’s a work phone. Or maybe you’ve really bought into the idea of having a day phone and a night phone. Doesn’t really matter. The point is this: you have one Apple Watch, and two iPhones. Can you feasibly use your watch with both phones on a regular basis?

No. Not even a little bit.

Because when most people who express the wish to use their Apple Watch with two different iPhones, I have to imagine that they want to move freely between iPhones, being able to quickly transfer the watch’s ability to accept calls, texts, and all sorts of other notifications, between both devices, and keep workout data consistent between the two, as well. And unfortunately, Apple doesn’t provide that capability. While you can now use multiple Apple Watches with the same iPhone , you, as of yet, cannot use the same Apple Watch with two different phones in any practical sense that would benefit most people in this situation.

    But

If you really need to switch between two phones a lot, and want to use your Apple Watch with both of them, there are some things to consider and options before you.
