iPhone 5s And iPhone 6 Series Will Be Missing Out On Ios 14 Support This Year

iPhone SE iOS 14 Review – Will It Get iOS 15?

iOS 14 and other Apple operating systems have been unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2020. These new updates not only bring in new features and some tweaks in the design but also focus on providing smooth software support for compatible devices.

Apple is known for offering software support to its older iPhones. The iPhone-maker has set a standard of releasing iOS 12.4.7 in May 2020 to the likes of iPhone 5s launched in 2013.

This year too, Apple will provide support for much older iPhones, even the ones launched in September 2015. The company has confirmed that the iPhone 6s and newer will get the iOS 14 update in the winter season.

Performance Is Fine All The Other Stuff Is Less Fine

The issues with iOS 14 running on old hardware are basically the same as they were last year, but lets recap.

For the iPhone 6S, the issue is battery life. Even when it was new, the iPhone 6S didnt last as long as the iPhone 6 that it replaced or the iPhone 7 that replaced it. And compared to an iPhone XR or any iPhone 11, which can easily survive a full day of use with battery to spare, the 6Ss battery life is particularly miserable. And thats with a gently used battery operating at 100 percent of its original capacitya years-old battery will be even worse.

The screen size of the original iPhone SE is undoubtedly still a selling point to a shrinking set of die-hards. But for anyone who bought it because it was cheap, its screen feels more claustrophobic than ever once you start adding widgets to your home screen.

As the parent of a one-year-old, though, the thing I noticed the most in daily use was the camera. That the 6S still takes OK pictures in decent light is a testament to Apples phone cameras, but you definitely miss the extra detail, the superior low-light performance, and the better video stabilization you get in newer iPhones.

Ios 15 Review: A Truly Digital Wallet

On the ID card front, eight states Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah have already committed to bringing digital drivers licenses and state ID cards to iOS 15 wallet. Were also waiting on word for more car makers, hotel chains and lock makers to detail on what cars, hotels and offices will offer digital keys through wallet.

If you own the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus or original iPhone SE, you can upgrade to iOS 15. Anything earlier than these phones, such as an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 5S, you’re out of luck.

The iOS 14 upgrade was available on these three devices, but that in itself wasn’t expected as many had anticipated Apple would drop support for those devices in its 2020 upgrade.

At WWDC 2021, Apple confirmed that any device that can run iOS 14 can also run iOS 15. The following shows which iPhones can update to iOS 15 once it’s available on September 20:

  • iPhone 13 / 13 mini / 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max

Ios 15 Review: Facetime Improvements

iOSs 15 revamp of the FadeTime video messaging app would go down as one of the most prominent changes in iOS 15, though the biggest addition faced a small delay. That would be SharePlay, the much ballyhooed feature that lets you watch videos, listen to music and share your screen with everyone else on a FaceTime call. SharePlay arrived in iOS 15.1 after Apple had a chance to fine-tune the capability, and as we’ll see in a moment, it was worth the wait.

Im not going to pretend that FaceTime has been high on my list of go-to video messaging apps, and thats largely because Ive found the app to be too cluttered for my taste, particularly for group calls. iOS 15 fixes that by giving you a grid view option that neatly stacks the faces of the people on a call instead of treating them as floating windows that resize depending on whos talking.

Even better, FaceTime in iOS 15 lets you reap the benefit of spatial audio, at least if youve got an iPhone XR or later. With spatial audio, youll hear the voice of the person speaking emanating from the part of the screen where their square is located. It’s a seemingly small tweak, but it makes a world of difference in letting video calls feel more natural.

Why Some People Dont Trust New Ios Versions

Its understandable that some people remain suspicious. Apple made a huge mistake years ago one that cost it at least half a billion dollars. It started surreptitiously slowing down aging iPhone models. It claimed it was doing so because otherwise the devices could crash when their processor required more peak power than their nearly worn out batteries could deliver.

But there were accusations that Apple was actually throttling older devices to convince their users to buy new ones. There was a huge lawsuit that cost the iPhone-maker $500 million. And other countries piled on with their own multimillion dollar fines.

So Apple stopped throttling devices in secret. Instead, it lets users of older devices throttle these themselves to prevent battery-related crashes.

iPhone SE (1st gen) is Amazing on iOS 14

Apples pushed an iOS 14.8.1 update to the iPhone SE and the firmware has the potential to help, or hurt, your devices performance.

Apple continues to refine iOS 14 as we push deeper into 2021 and the latest upgrade is a small point release that brings important security upgrades to the iPhone SE and other iPhone models.

Many iPhone SE users have moved to Apples new firmware. While a lot of the feedback has been good, were also hearing about various issues ranging from minor bugs to serious performance problems.

If you decide to go ahead with the installation, note that iOS 14.8.1 requires a fairly small download if your device is currently running iOS 14.8.

If youre running an older version of iOS on your iPhone SE, the download could be even bigger. Thats because the features and fixes from iOS updates you skipped are baked into the upgrade.

With all of that in mind, we want to take you through the most important things to know, right now, about the iPhone SE iOS 14.8.1 update.

This walkthrough will guide you through some of the problems plaguing the software, the iOS 14 downgrade status, the iOS 14 jailbreak, and the iOS 14.8.1 updates performance.

Ios 15 Performance: No Slowdowns To Be Found

The comparison tests were done by the YouTube channel iAppleBytes. It ran the Geekbench benchmarking app on multiple iPhone models going back to 2016.

Running iOS 15, the 2016 iPhone SE scored a 1041 on the Geekbench 5 Multi-Core test. It scored a 1042 running iOS 14.8 and a 1042 running iOS 13.7.

The iPhone 6S scored 1039 on that same test while running iOS 15. It got an identical score running iOS 14.8 and 1042 with iOS 13.7.

A test iPhone 7 scored 1393 with iOS 15, a 1407 with iOS 14.8 and 1403 with iOS 13.7. Thats less than 1% difference.

When iAppleBytes tested an iPhone 8 with Apples latest and it scored 2405. The score was 2271 with iOS 14.8 and just 2071 with iOS 13.7. Thats an increase of 16% with the new version.

An iPhone XR with iOS 15 scored 2504 on Geekbench 5. Its score was 2510 on iOS 14.8 and 2556 on iOS 13.7 a 2% decrease with the latest version.

And, finally, an iPhone 11 with the new operating system version scored 3245 versus 3289 with iOS 14.8. Upgrading was a mere 1% decrease.

Why Ios Updates Are Critical

New iOS upgrades provide more than additional features. They are also how Apple distributes security patches. For an example ripped from the headlines, anyone not running iOS 15, iOS 14.8 or iOS 12.5.5 has a device that fully vulnerable to the Pegasus spyware.

Thats why anyone who has an older iPhone running some previous iOS version should consider an upgrade. If it helps, install and run Geekbench 5 to check the performance of your device. If its not significantly better than what iOS 15 is getting, think hard about moving to a more secure version.

Organize Your Alerts With A Notification Summary

Apple wants to help you manage your notifications in iOS 15, starting with the Notification Summary feature. Rather than letting notifications pile up on your home screen, you can schedule non-urgent alerts to arrive in a bundle at a specific time of day. Important notifications like calls, direct messages and other time-sensitive alerts will still appear immediately.

To try this out, open Settings, press Notifications, and tap Scheduled Summary.

You can decide which features you want to access when your phone is locked.

Verdict: Should I Upgrade To Ios 15

All in all, iOS 15 is a comprehensive boost in useful features over its predecessor. Focus mode gives you more control over how intrusive the digital life can be, while the beefed-up privacy settings make sure your data remains your own.

FaceTime will finally become a serious alternative to Zoom and Microsoft Teams in iOS 15, and the improvements to Messages with the Shared With You feature will be sure to make life that little bit easier when trying to recall that cool thing your friend sent you.

Add to this Live Text, Visual Look Up, Group Tabs in Safari, improvements to Notifications plus several other app upgrades, and iOS 15 is shaping up to be a noticeable upgrade when it arrives later this year.

Which Is More Secure: Ios 148 Or Ios 15

The final major version of iOS 14 is the recently released 14.8. Future versions of iOS 14 will probably primarily focus on patching security vulnerabilities of the in the wild and likely to be exploited varieties. We dont know yet whether Apple intends to patch all known security vulnerabilities that apply to iOS 14, but if history is any indication, Apple might leave some issues unresolvedi.e. perpetual zero-days. As for new features, future version of iOS 14 will likely not include many significant ones .

But as of right now, is iOS 14.8 or iOS 15 more secure?

Lets start with the assumption that iOS 15 is more secure. After all, its a higher version number, and it was released a week after iOS 14.8.

iOS 15 addresses a larger quantity of vulnerabilities, when comparing the number of CVEs addressed in the 14.8 and 15.0 security update notes. As of today, Apple identifies 13 separate CVEs fixed in iOS 14.8, and 22 CVEs fixed in 15.0.

However, those raw numbers dont tell the whole story.

Apples security release notes for iOS 14.8 identify two actively exploited vulnerabilities, one of which was leveraged by the Pegasus spyware. But, strangely, iOS 15s security notes make no mention of either of those vulnerabilities. This could potentially mean several things, such as:

  • iOS 15.0 may fix the vulnerabilities, but Apple forgot to document this.
  • iOS 15.0 may not have been vulnerable to one or both of these vulnerabilities.
  • Add An Alternate Appearance To Face Id

iOS 14 on iPhone SE – How Does it Run?

Apple’s facial recognition feature, Face ID, constantly learns and relearns different aspects of your face with each scan. If you’re struggling to get Face ID to consistently recognize you, try the Alternate Appearance option.

Go to Settings> Face ID & Passcode> enter your PIN > Set Up An Alternate Appearance and go through the process of enrolling your face again.

Keep your screen dim to save battery life.

Could Ios Fragmentation Become A Problem For App Developers

A real risk with this change is that iOS and iPadOS will become fragmented. Developers will have to decide whether to upgrade software for iPhones and iPads to only be compatible with the latest version of the operating system. In some cases, this could mean that they wont be able to roll out certain new features to all users, and their apps will perform differently on devices that havent been upgraded.

Over time, its likely that third-party apps will require at least iOS 15, so at some point you may lose out on app updates if you dont move to the latest major iOS version.

Set Up A Focus To Manage Your Notifications

We get a lot of notifications every day, but not all of them are relevant all the time. With iOS 15, Apple introduced a new feature to address this called Focus Mode. Think of it as a sort of custom Do Not Disturb, but tailored to specific circumstances.

This allows notifications from important people and apps to come through so that you don’t miss anything, while blocking out less relevant alerts. You can set up different types of Focus modes for specific circumstances. Apple currently offers options for Do Not Disturb, personal, sleep, work, driving, fitness, gaming, mindfulness and reading, but you can also create your own custom mode. You can schedule Focus modes so that they turn on automatically when needed, and display a status in apps so that others know when you have notifications silenced.

To get started, open the Settings menu, tap Focus, and choose one of the available options to set up your notification preferences. Tap the plus symbol in the top right corner to add a new Focus.
