Subscribing To Visual Voicemail
Nearly every cellular service provider in North America supports Apple’s Visual Voicemail, even many of the smaller ones. Apple offers a full list of carriers and what features they support for your reference, but it’s safe to say that you’re covered if you use any of the big carriers.
However, it’s important to be aware that not every plan includes Visual Voicemail by default, and some carriers may charge extra for it. To make matters even more confusing, some carriers use the term “Visual Voicemail” to refer to a variety of different services that also cover Android smartphones and other devices, so make sure you have iPhone Visual Voicemail set up as part of your plan. Most carriers do this automatically if you purchased your iPhone directly from them, but you may need to be more specific about your requirements if you’re bringing your own iPhone onto a new carrier.
It’s pretty easy to tell if you don’t have the correct iPhone Visual Voicemail plan, as none of the steps below will work. Instead, tapping the Voicemail button in your Phone app will simply place a call to your basic voicemail service, where you’ll need to key in your passcode and retrieve messages the old-fashioned way, using the numeric phone keypad.
Apple iPhone: How To Set Up Voicemail
If you are new to Apple`s ecosystem, just bought a new iPhone or even just recently switched from Android to iOS, one of the things you would surely like to know is how to set up voicemail on your brand new shining iPhone.
Alternatively, you already have an iPhone, but didn`t manage to set up that voicemail feature yet.

If it is your first time that you are on this page, the system will prompt a message in the centre of the page requesting to set up your voicemail. Setting Up Sprint Voicemail On Your iPhone
As with AT& T, you need to go through an extra setup step with Sprint. Press and hold 1 on the dial pad in the Phone app to begin.
For a new voicemail box, you need to create a four to 10 digit passcode. Then you need to record your name. After you’ve done this, you can choose between recording a personal greeting or using the standard greeting. Finally, you can choose whether to enable One-Touch Access to your voicemail.
Make sure to do this all without hanging up or canceling the process. If you don’t go through all the steps, you’ll have to repeat everything again.

How To Listen To Voicemail On iPhone
When someone leaves a voice message, you will see a badge with a number next to the Voicemail tab in the Phone app. The number represents all unheard voicemail messages.
Tap a voicemail to open the playback options.

When you have Bluetooth speakers connected to your iPhone, tap Audio, and then choose either listening directly from the iPhone, listening with the iPhone speakers, or listening with the connected Bluetooth speaker.

Setting Up Basic Voicemail
If your carrier doesn’t support Visual Voicemail, or it’s simply an add-on you’d rather not pay for, then you can still use your iPhone with a basic voicemail service. The exact setup procedures for this will vary depending on your carrier, although they all typically follow the same steps of dialing the correct number and setting up your voicemail over the phone. Here’s a quick overview of how this works for the major U.S. carriers:
AT& T: You can find AT& Ts specific instructions here. Tap 1 or the Voicemail button to specifically navigate to your voicemail. You will be prompted to choose or record a greeting if you have not done so previously. AT& T will request that you create a password. If you get many calls, you can choose to upgrade your voicemail for more storage, but that isnt necessary for visual voicemail.

Record A New Voicemail Greeting

Setting up voicemail on your iPhone will only take a minute or two of your time. Once you record your voicemail greeting, you wont have to worry about missing a call. You can also let the phone call go straight to voicemail when you dont recognize the incoming number.
If you have an iPhone X, 12, or 13, heres how you can set up voicemail to answer calls.
Every time you miss or decline a call, it will go straight to voicemail, and whoever is calling you will hear your recording. When you want to check if you have any messages, simply tap on the Phone app and go to the Voicemail tab. All the voicemails youve received will be listed there. You can also use Siri to play a voicemail recording. Just say, Hey, Siri. Play the voicemail from John.

Tap Voicemail.
The first time you tap any recent voicemail, the app will begin transcribing the message. After a few seconds, the transcription should load on the voicemail page.
If you notice blank lines in the transcription , those are missing words that were not able to be transcribed due to the message being garbled or unclear.
Once the transcription is complete, you can tap the button to send the voicemail transcription via AirDrop, Mail, or iMessage.

The most effective and easy way you can use to set up voicemail on iPhone SE is to select the phone app and then press and hold the 1 key. If prompted, enter your voicemail password, then follow the rest onscreen instructions to set up your voicemail.

‘Need inspiration for a custom message?’ Troy asks. ‘Here is one that is commonly used and works in most scenarios: “Hi, you have reached . Sorry, I cant come to the phone right now, please leave a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Thank you.”
‘If you have chosen your selected greeting, press save, and your Voicemail is ready to go! To double-check that your voicemail works, have someone call your phone,’ says Troy.

S To Set Up Voicemail On iPhone
Open the Phone App on your iPhone and tap on the Voicemail tab in bottom menu.
On the Setup screen, tap on Set Up Now option.
On the next screen, type a Password for your Voicemail box, re-enter the Password and tap on Done.
Note: If you do not see the option to enter Password, your Voicemail is already setup and you will land on the Greeting screen.
On Greeting screen, select the Default option, if you want to use your Service Providers Default Greeting. If you want to record your own Custom Greeting, tap on the Custom option.
If you selected the Custom option, tap on the Record button and Speak your Custom Greeting Message. When you are done recording, tap on the Stop button.
Tap on the Play button to hear your recorded Greeting, if you are happy with your recorded Message, tap on the Save option, located at top-right corner.
At any time, you can erase your recorded Greeting Message by going back to Greeting screen and selecting the Default option.
How Do I Manage My Settings
To adjust voicemail settings, tap the Menu icon on the Messages screen and then tap Settings.
The Settings screen includes:
- Greetings: lets you change the type or record a new greeting
- Change Password: reset your password
- Convert to Text: makes your voicemail available in text format
- Proximity Sensor: deactivates screen when you’re on a call
- Notifications: displays new message notifications in the status bar

How To Choose The Greetings In Voicemail
On the greetings page, there will be a Default open, which you can use for the default voicemail greetings of the provider. If you want to record, you can even record it by tapping on the Custom. There you will find two options, one will be the default, and the other will be Custom. If you want to record it, select the Custom option and tap on record.
You can just record whatever you want to say and how you want to greet people. You can tap on play to preview the message, and if you want to cancel the recording, there will be an option to cancel and record it again.
If you are happy with the message you have recorded, you can just tap on the save option and save it. Your voicemail is fully protected and features the custom or default greeting.
Access Visual Voicemail From Another Phone
You can also dial into Apple’s Visual Voicemail service like a traditional basic voicemail service, so you can still check your messages when you’re away from your iPhone or otherwise unable to use it. Here’s how:
Step 1: Using another phone, dial your own mobile number.
Step 2: When you hear your voicemail greeting, press * or # to bypass the greeting.
Step 3: Enter your voicemail password.
Step 4: Follow the verbal instructions to listen to your voicemail messages. This may vary between different carriers.
Also note that since Visual Voicemail requires a data connection, it won’t be available if your cellular data is off and there’s no Wi-Fi network nearby. In this case, you’ll see a message at the top of your Voicemail screen letting you know that Visual Voicemail is currently unavailable, along with a button that can be used to dial into your voicemail directly.

Using Visual Voicemail Transcription
Once you’ve set up Visual Voicemail, you may also be able to take advantage of Voicemail Transcription, a feature that Apple introduced in iOS 10 that uses Siri’s on-device intelligence to attempt to translate your voicemail messages into readable text. Note that this feature is still technically in “beta,” so it doesn’t usually produce a perfect rendering of the message. Still, it’s usually enough to get a gist of what the person wants, and it can be a great timesaver if the message is something really simple like “call me back,” since it will save you the trouble of listening to the message.
Since Voicemail Transcription occurs entirely on the iPhone, and not on Apple’s servers, it only works on the iPhone 6s and later models. You’ll also need to be running at least iOS 10, and Siri’s language must be set to either English or English .
Step 1: Open your Phone app.
Step 2: Tap the Voicemail button in the bottom-right corner.
Step 3: Tap on a voicemail message to open it. If Voicemail Transcription is working properly, you should either see a transcript of the message below the playback button, or the phrase Unable to Transcribe This Message if your iPhone wasn’t able to make any sense of it at all. Note that for longer transcripts, you may need to scroll to read the whole thing, as the voicemail details only expand so far.
