Common iPhone Sound Not Working Causes
The cause for sound not working on iPhone can be many. Some of them are:
Speaker Error: Moisture, or sometimes when you accidentally drop your iPhone, it loosens the connection of the iPhone speaker, causing the audio failure.
DND: The Do Not Disturb mode of the iPhone turns off the entire sound of the iPhone. The features are designed to make it silent. At times when you accidentally turn it on, the phone won’t play any audio. It may be the reason for the error you are experiencing.
External Connectivity: If you have connected your iPhone to an external Bluetooth device, it will be using that device for audio playback. Any error in the output device or obstacles between the device and your iPhone interrupts the sound and causes the audio error.
Dusty Ports: The newer version of iPhones doesn’t have a dedicated audio jack like the older models, but they do have a hybrid jack. If this jack gets clogged with dust or debris, it can interrupt the normal working of the iPhone audio system. The phone may detect an earphone and try to send audio output through it, but since nothing is connected, you won’t get any playback.
Screen Recording Without Sound
On the other hand, if you don’t want to create a video with external sound and outside noises, you can do so in a simpler way. Here are some steps that are opted for recording internal sound only.
Step 1â Slide up your iPhone screen for accessing the Control Center.
Step 2â Press firmly on the Screen Recording Button and hold for 2 seconds.
Step 3â Turn OFF the external audio by clicking the Red Microphone Icon.
Step 4â Press the Start Recording button to get a video without sound.
In short, you only need to turn ON and OFF the Red Microphone icon for screen recording with and without sound respectively.

The next setup will allow you to connect an XLR condenser microphone, or really any XLR professional microphone, to an iPhone using an audio mixer or soundboard. This setup certainly involves more setup and practice, as well as introduces more potential points of failure or sources of noise into you recording. It also offers the greatest flexibility and degree of control over your recording and audio quality.
Connecting a Rode NTG-2 condenser shotgun microphone to an iPhone using an audio mixer.
Using a dedicated audio mixer or soundboard to record audio on your iPhone not only allows you to use any microphone or audio source you have, but it also allows you to use multiple sources. Each pot, or audio channel, has independent controls that allow you to adjust the audio level for that microphone in addition to fine tuning things like the low, mid and high audio frequency for each source. For example, hearing a low level refrigerator hum? You can minimize that with your low frequency adjustment. And an audio mixer or soundboard also has the option of providing the 48v of phantom power you need for a condenser microphone. In this example, well be using the Rode NTG-2 XLR Condenser Shotgun Microphone.
iPhone: Record Video While Listening To Music
The good news is that it is possible to record a video on your iPhone while listening to music simultaneously. However, this technique is only possible on iPhone models that support the QuickTake video capture feature. This is included only on the iPhone 10S and above.
That said, if you wish to record videos while playing music on an older iPhone, youll need the help of third-party apps from the App Store. For example, lets users record videos without interrupting any background music. Its possible to save the video into your camera roll then.
The only downside to using Instagram for this purpose is the 60 second limit to each video recorded.
iMovie is another great app for recording music over a video. This free app lets you conveniently record videos while playing the song of your choice in the background.

How To Use Your iPhone As A Recording Device
The iPhone is a universal tool with a ton of impressive capabilities. One of those skills is the recorder , which is a part of Apple’s core applications that come pre-installed on all its mobile devices. This feature allows you to easily turn your iPhone into a recording machine that can create decent audio for any personal or professional needs all with just a few taps.
To get started with using Voice Memos, you need to first find the app on your phone. Typically, this can be found on your home screen. Cable Into The Headphone Jack
Heres where we get fancy. Its possible to plug anything into the audio jack of your iPhone and record it. If your iPhone doesnt have an audio jack, then just plug in the Lightning to 3.5mm jack adapter that came with your iPhone, and plug the cable into that. If you recently spent almost $1,000 on an iPhone XS, then you wont have gotten one of these dongles. Youll have to buy your own.
After youve dealt with the dongles, theres one more hurdle. The iPhone wont record through its headphone jack unless it thinks its connected to a headset. That means you need a special cable. If you ever bought some headphones that have a detachable cable with an inline remote and mic, then youre in luck.
Just unplug it from those headphones, and plug it into the output of your audio source instead. A little keyboard, for example. Or another iPhone playing music. To record, press play on one device, and record on the other, and youre off.
Here Is How You Can Record While Playing Music On An iPhone
The iPhone is more than a phone. It offers a wide selection of communication options. In addition to phone calls, texts and emails, it comes with Apples facetime software, which allows you to hold video calls with other Facetime users directly from your phone. In the age of podcasting and live streaming, playing music simultaneously while recording an audio or video can be a useful feature. However, if you are an iPhone user, you will probably notice that your device automatically stops playing music when you try to record a video or audio clip. It can be a major inconvenience if the goal is to add a soundtrack to a recording.
The good thing is this can be fixed.

Can I Screen Record With Sound On My iPhone iPad Or Ipod Touch
If you have an iPhone or iPad that’s running iOS 10 or earlier, you can’t use the methods in this article to screen record, but you can use Quicktime. You can use the screen record feature on any iPhone or iPad that can run iOS 11 or later, or iPadOS. Here’s a list of every iPhone and iPad that can screen record.
The Pro Method: Use A Recorder With An Input
This method is the one we recommend for any broadcast-quality recording. Unless youre tape synching your interview , this is the best way to go because it eliminates as much signal noise as possible. There are no third-party servers, and youre reducing as many laggy internet and bad-signal phone issues as you can. The downside is its complicated and expensive.
The first item you need is a recorder with an input. There are many options at varying price points, but the Zoom H5 recorder is one of the best. It has all the I/O you needinputs for recording and outputs for headphones. Plus, it has MicroSD expansion and is quite versatile for all your recording needs.
Next, you need a cable to connect your iPhone to your recorderlike this Cable Matters 3.5mm male to XLR male audio cable for a little over $8.00. If your phone has a headphone jack, youre all set. If youre using a newer iPhone, however, youll need a lightning to headphone jack dongle . If your iPhone came with a dongle, that one would work. If not, you can get one for $9. From there, grab your iPhone , and plug the 3.5mm cable into the phone/dongle. Plug the other end into the Zoom recorder.
If you want to record your side of the call, youll also need a mic and an XLR cable. We recommend the tried-and-true Shure SM58 Microphone along with this $7 . Plug That into the second input on the Zoom recorder.
Heres the whole setup in action.
