For $399, its hard not to recommend the iPhone SE. It has fantastic build quality, great cameras, and one of the fastest processors currently available. But this all comes with the caveat that you like iOS, and dont mind the restrictions that come with it. If you do buy this device, I would suggest spending the extra $50 to upgrade to the 128GB storage option, as 64GB is a bit low, especially for a phone slated to last you three to five years.
While I would absolutely recommend this phone to iOS fans, competes almost directly with the iPhone SE in the budget space. Its really a tit-for-tat between the two devices. The iPhone SE has a much faster processor, better build quality, and wireless charging, but the Pixel 4a sports a better OLED display, Googles fantastic Pixel UI, and the legendary Pixel camera system. Plus, the Pixel 4a costs. $50 less, at $350.
If youre willing to spend a little more, the OnePlus 7T is only $500 and offers a variety of cameras, great UI, and a fast 90Hz display. Or you can pick up a , which has just dropped to the same $500 price tag.
Spend a bit more, and you can pick up the OnePlus 8 for $700, which adds 5G connectivity and the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. A bit more still, and you could get the LG V60 for $800. Draw, again. Kind of. Both iPhone SE models are equipped with a 4.7-inch Retina LCD display, which is tiny compared to virtually every smartphone on the market: flagship or not. Plus, the large bezels at the top and bottom of the display only make it seem smaller, and owners will be stuck with a 60Hz refresh rate. The iPhone SE is Apple’s entry-level iPhone, starting at $429. The device offers an affordable entry point to the iPhone lineup, with many important features such as a powerful A-series chip, a high-quality camera with 4K video recording, Haptic Touch, wireless charging, water and dust resistance, and more. A 4.7-inch screen on a modern-day phone may seem antiquated, but those shopping for one of the best small phones wont be disappointed in this panel.
I enjoyed checking out the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer on YouTube on the iPhone SE 2020s Retina Display. The superheros gleaming red, blue and gold suit popped as she deflected bullets with her silver bracelet. The iPhone SEs screen also did a good job rendering finer details in a Tiger King scene: I could make out individual whiskers on the majestic animals face.
Just dont expect a full HD picture. The iPhone SEs display resolution is just 1334 x 750 pixels. We would prefer to see a 1080p display but its not too bad of a trade-off.
The iPhone SEs screen is bright, as its rated for 625 nits and scored an even higher 653 nits in our testing. Its just a bit dimmer than the Pixel 4as 681 nits.
I didnt have any issues viewing the screen outdoors when surfing the web or taking photos. The panel also supports True Tone, which means it can automatically adjust the screens color temperature based on the ambient lighting conditions.
Based on our tests, the iPhone SEs display reproduces 111.2% of the sRGB color gamut, which just barely beats the 105.8% from the Pixel 4as OLED panel. The iPhone SE delivers accurate colors, too, achieving a Delta-E score of 0.2 a score of zero is perfect. The Pixel 4as screen scored 0.29.

The big change with the iPhone SE 2020 is the upgraded engine from the iPhone 8. While the external design is nigh-on identical, Apple has supercharged the insides, with an improved chipset running the show.
That extra power is designed to allow the new iPhone SE to rival the iPhone 11 range in terms of speed when flipping between apps, and editing snaps and video, and should also improve the camera performance .
Apple looks to have implemented some serious performance improvements while keeping the cost of this phone down, and that impression has been borne out in our experience with the iPhone SE: it matched the iPhone 11 Pro Max for speed when exporting an iMovie, and actually compressed a 1080p four-and-a- half minute video at an almost identical speed.
We compared it to the older iPhone 8 Plus with the same test, and when compressing and exporting a movie down to a smaller size, the iPhone SE 2020 managed the task so much quicker.
If youre going to tax the phone to its limits, then the iPhone 11 Pro handsets are more able to handle graphically intensive tasks and apps – but even when playing more powerful games like Pascals Wager, we didnt feel the new iPhone SE losing any performance. The average user will notice little difference unless intentionally trying to tax the SE 2020.
