Will I Have To Buy A New iPhone Charger For The iPhone 12

iPhone 12 comes with a new cable instead of EarPods and Charger?

Whether or not you’ll need to buy a new power adapter depends on what you have lying around the house.

As mentioned above, the iPhone 12 series will come with a USB-C power adapter.

Type-C is a smaller kind of USB connector found on most modern laptops, including every Macbook released in the past few years.

The trouble is, iPhone adapters until now have been USB type-A, meaning the one you got with your last Apple mobile won’t fit the iPhone 12’s cable.

What this means is, unless you have a laptop with a USB-C port or a random USB-C adapter lying around you’ll likely need to buy a new adapter to charge any of the iPhone 12 series.

A new 20W USB-C wall adapter popped up on Apple’s online store on October 13 selling for £19 in the UK or $19 in the US.

That may seem a bit of a cheeky move, but Apple actually reduced the price of its USB-C adapters in the wake of Tuesday’s announcement.

Previously, an 18W USB-C charger on its store was priced at £29 / $29.

Does The iPhone 13 Come With A Charger

The iPhone 13 comes with a USB-C to Lightning cable, which you could use to plug your iPhone in to charge if you already have a USB-C adapter plug, or a USB-C port on your computer.

However, if the only adapter plugs you have in your house are the older USB standard then you will need to purchase a new adapter.

Apple has confirmed that all four new iPhone 13 models will not come with any charger or headphones, just like the iPhone 12 series lacked these features in 2020.

Does Apple Sell An iPhone 12 Charger

Apple doesn’t sell a specific charger for the iPhone 12. However, the company does sell chargers that work with the iPhone 12.

Other companies like KEUTEK sell chargers compatible with the iPhone 12 as well. Luckily, these chargers are completely safe for your iPhone 12, and they’re cheaper than the chargers that Apple offers.

The Quickest Charge: Anker Nano 20

At just $16.99, originally $19.99, this charger is both smaller in size and cheaper than Apples own 20-watt charger. It has some super-neat tech inside gallium nitride, or GaN, is replacing silicon inside. These electrical components, which power the charge, are both smaller than silicon and dont get as hot. Even when deep into a charge, the brick does not get overly warm to the touch. And with a single USB-C port on the front, it works with the included cable that comes with your iPhone.

During our tests, charging speeds with the Nano were lighting quick.

For our charging testing, we ensured the iPhones battery was fully drained. After just two minutes and 16 seconds of being plugged in, the Apple logo appeared and the iPhone turned itself back on. And at three minutes and 42 seconds, it was already at 10%.

We should note that, generally, iPhones are quicker to charge in the beginning and slow down as they reach closer to 100%. This goes back to the technology inside the lithium ion battery. At 15 minutes flat, the iPhone 12 Pro reached 27%, and at just 27 minutes it was already at 50%. It fully reached 100% in under one hour.

Whats The Best Way To Charge My iPhone 12

The iPhone 12

The best way to charge the iPhone 12 is to use the included USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C charger.

Apple will suggest you use its 20W USB-C charger. There are plenty of good third-party chargers like this 2-port charger from Anker, and many others available online.

Using a USB-C cable and USB-C charger will allow the iPhone to charge at faster speeds. Using USB-C, you can charge the iPhone to 50% in about half an hour. The highest wattage the iPhone 12 will use is around 22 watts, so a 20 watt or 30 watt charger will result in the about same charging speed. But basically any USB-C charger will be significantly faster than the old USB-A chargers.

What Charger Do You Need For The iPhone 12

Now that Apple is shipping charger-less boxes, you may be wondering, “What charger do I need for the iPhone 12?” You’ll need to use a USB-C power adapter for the iPhone 12 and you can also use a Qi charging pad.

If you plan on purchasing the MagSafe charging pad for the iPhone 12, keep in mind that you will still need a USB-C power adapter for it, too.

What Accessories Come With The iPhone 12

Charge Your iPhone 12 Without Buying A New Charger-How To-Tutorial

Along with its simple packaging, Apple has decided to simplify the inside of the iPhone package as well. The company is only including the following accessories:

  • Your new iPhone
  • A USB-C-to-Lightning cable
  • Documentation/instructions

Many people are surprised not to find the typical package from Apple. Along with these accessories, you’d typically find EarPods and a charging block. However, as we’re going to explain, Apple has decided to step away from this delivery method.

With that in mind, you may need to supplement your iPhone 12 order or consider investing in charging equipment other than the new charging cord that you are given.

iPhone 12 Wall Charger

The iPhone 12 box doesn’t come with a wall plug, and you’ll need one to connect your phone to the mains.

It’s very possible you already have one of these so won’t need a new one – but you really should check first. Most wall chargers that come with gadgets have USB-A ports – that’s the big, rectangular input – but the iPhone 12 cable plugs into USB-C – that’s a smaller input with rounded edges.

If you need to buy one of these, the Apple website sells one, but it’s a touch pricey, so it could be worth searching for an instead.

What Could Apple Have Done Instead

Were not here to question Apples eco-friendly initiatives. Ditching the charging block and EarPods are both environmentally conscious moves. However, were not so fond of Apple trying to turn the situation into a profit by selling the charger and Pods back to you. It makes everything seem a bit more cash-dependent, rather than trying to protect the Earth. MagSafe makes matters even worse, as youd have to shell out $39 for a compatible charger.

Even though Apple seems to have taken the slightly wrong direction with its chargers and EarPods, there are things that the company could have done instead. They could have made a charger and EarPods available in stores, free of charge. iPhone 12 owners could walk into the Apple Store, pick up unpackaged blocks and buds, and be on their way. It still consumes resources to create the chargers, which still have to be shipped in, but its the first step.

If Apple really wanted to make life easier, they could ditch Lightning altogether. Then, users could rely on universal chargers and cables to keep themselves moving, and Apple wouldnt have to produce nearly as many chargers. Yes, USB-C is still a mess in 2021, but its far more flexible than Lightning.

After all, Apple has already swapped Lightning for USB-C on its iPads, so whats the hold-up?

Which New iPhones Won’t Come With Power Adapters

According to Apple, the entire iPhone 12 range won’t come with a power adapter in the box.

They’ll also be missing Apple’s wired earbuds, the EarPods.

The phones will still come with a USB type-C charging cable, however, which you can connect to a laptop or your own power adapter.

For clarity, the iPhone 12 range announced October 13 includes: The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone Mini.

What If You Have Another Phone

Why No Charger in iPhone 12 Models?

Thats all fine if you own a new Apple or Samsung phone, or have purchased a phone with its own fast-charging system like OnePlus. But what if you own an older phone, and are simply unsure what the fastest charging method will be? This will take some research, as there isnt a simple one-size-fits-all answer.

If youre not sure what charging system your phone uses, our phone reviews include sections on charging and the type of charger included, or visit the manufacturers website to check the specifications of your device. Motorola, for example, states the Moto Edge Plus uses its 18W TurboPower system, and that it includes a TurboPower charger in the box.

A pretty safe bet if you own an older Motorola, Samsung, LG, BlackBerry, or Sony Xperia phone, or numerous HTC and Xiaomi phones, is to opt for a charger that complies with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Like OnePluss Warp Charge, Quick Charge is a proprietary charging technology, but it can be found on a wide variety of devices powered by Qualcomm chipsets from different manufacturers. Motorola and Samsung even base the proprietary Adaptive Fast Charge and TurboPower systems on it.

To ensure the charger remains useful for the future, this Aukey dual-port wall charger has a USB Type-A port along with a USB Type-C port, which is important if you have an older phone. Alternatively, if you only want USB Type-A ports and guaranteed Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 support, this Aukey charger may be for you.

What Comes In The Box

The Apple iPhone 12 series has the same old lightning-to-USB-C cable in the box, but without the adapter. So if you dont have the old charger with you, you would need to shell out some bucks on purchasing a new one. Moreover, there are no earphones or cases, so youll need to purchase them at an extra cost too. While Apple is selling their own AirPods and MagSafe compatible chargers, there are some aftermarket options that wont break the bank, not to mention the range of cases and Apple iPhone 12 series chargers andMini PD Chargers that ESR has rolled out.

What Can I Use To Charge iPhone 12

Apple no longer includes the standard USB charging brick with the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 mini. There is only one cable included in the box a USB-C to Lightning cable. But how can you charge the iPhone 12?

If you are coming from an older iPhone, you probably have a lot of USB-A to Lightning cables laying around.

These cables have a rectangular USB connection on one end a Lightning cable on the other you put the Lightning connector into the iPhone to charge it. The iPhone 12 series of iPhones instead comes with a USB-C to Lightning cable. These cables feature the same Lightning port that goes into the iPhone but the other end is a rounded capsule-like shape this is a USB-C connector.
