iPhone Se Review: Display
Lets just say that watching shows and movies on the iPhone SE is not exactly immersive. This 4.7-inch LCD panel has a resolution of 1344 x 750 pixels, so it’s not full HD, and it’s impossible not to notice the large bezels when watching movies and videos on this phone.
When watching the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer on YouTube, the iPhone SE did a fine job rendering the warm colors of Tatooine and concerned grizzled look of Ewan McGregor, but the black bars above and below the action proved distracting. I wanted to pinch-to-zoom to make the picture bigger.
One could argue that the Pixel 5a is for a different target audience with its 6.34-inch display, but you can’t ignore that you can get a much bigger full HD OLED screen for just $20 more.
Still, the iPhone SE ‘s display performed well in our lab tests. The panel registered 114.7% of the sRGB color gamut and 81.2% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space. That’s good, but behind the 119.3% and 84.5% turned in by the Pixel 5a. However, the new iPhone SE still wins on color accuracy with a Delta-E score of 0.21 the Pixel 5a scored 0.32.
What Does The S Stand For Then
The word SE in Spanish means I know, but when it comes to the S in iPhones nobody really knows. It might have been the case that at one point S indicated speed, or Siri, but as time has gone on the S has come to indicate that this is a more minor update, with numbered version updates being considered more significant. Thats not Apples intention, but its what people have come to believe.

Many of us probably knew already what SE stands for in iPhone SE Apple revealed it last time when they first introduced the first gen iPhone SE back in 2016.
The official translation from Apple is: SE Special Edition, assuming they stick with the name.

The $400 for this Smartphone Extraordinaire is a Smart Expenditure. On one hand, it still has the Sharp Edges of the iPhone 5s, and its addition to the lineup will remind critics of Samsungs Excess. On the other hand, its 1.5-day battery life means that it only Sips Energy. This is a piece of very Solid Equipment, even if it is a Special Edition for people with Small Extremities.

The Cupertino-based giant has put an end to the speculations by confirming that in iPhone SE, the ‘SE’ stands for ‘Special Edition’, a name that had been rumoured since early this year. Apple’s Philip Schiller, Senior Vice President of Marketing, confirmed the naming to Jason Cipriani of FortuneTech.
Apple on Monday also announced that the iPhone SE will be available in India at a starting price of Rs. 39,000. As for availability, Apple said the iPhone SE will be available for purchase in India starting early April.

For $399, its hard not to recommend the iPhone SE. It has fantastic build quality, great cameras, and one of the fastest processors currently available. But this all comes with the caveat that you like iOS, and dont mind the restrictions that come with it. If you do buy this device, I would suggest spending the extra $50 to upgrade to the 128GB storage option, as 64GB is a bit low, especially for a phone slated to last you three to five years.
While I would absolutely recommend this phone to iOS fans, competes almost directly with the iPhone SE in the budget space. Its really a tit-for-tat between the two devices. The iPhone SE has a much faster processor, better build quality, and wireless charging, but the Pixel 4a sports a better OLED display, Googles fantastic Pixel UI, and the legendary Pixel camera system. Plus, the Pixel 4a costs. $50 less, at $350.
If youre willing to spend a little more, the OnePlus 7T is only $500 and offers a variety of cameras, great UI, and a fast 90Hz display. Or you can pick up a , which has just dropped to the same $500 price tag.
Spend a bit more, and you can pick up the OnePlus 8 for $700, which adds 5G connectivity and the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. A bit more still, and you could get the LG V60 for $800. And if you want to ball out, there are a plethora of great phones in the $900 plus range, like the Samsung Galaxy S20, OnePlus 8 Pro, and more.
Who Should Buy The Apple iPhone Se 3
A phone is more than just its processor
I suppose most XDA readers share my views too. But the iPhone SE 3 was not made for people like us. The iPhone SE 3 is targeted at these particular groups:
- Those who want a new 5G iPhone at as low a price as possible
- Those who want a small phone, but find the iPhone 13 Mini too expensive
- Those who dont care about looks and want an easy to use, affordable phone
- Those who really want a physical home button
- Those who want to stay on the latest software update for the longest possible time without spending more than $500
I have read enough articles, internet forum posts and spoken to enough people in real life to know these groups exist, particularly in North America, where iMessage lock-in is a thing. Theres also a group of individuals who are absolutely used to the physical home button on an iPhone, and want to resist change for as long as they have options. There are people who will never consider an Android, even if theyre on a tight budget. For them, an iPhone at $430 is very appealing. And to them, the iPhone SE 3 makes sense.

The iPhone Se Has A Longer Battery Life
The iPhone SE now supports a 5G cellular connection — the more widely available but slower Sub-6 variety, though the SE will be able to connect to the faster C-band spectrum rolling out in the next several months. The SE does not support millimeter wave, but unless you live in specific locations like near a sports stadium in a major city, you likely don’t have mmWave coverage anyway. We have a few guides on CNET explaining C-band and comparing the iPhone SE’s 5G support against the $499, LTE-only iPhone 11. The short version is that this 2022 iPhone SE is set to support what will likely be how most people get that faster 5G network and speeds.
Unfortunately, my carrier doesn’t have 5G coverage where I tested the phone. But keep checking here because I’ll update this review with my experience using the SE on 5G once I can. That said, calls over 4G LTE were good and sounded clear.
The SE easily lasts a day on a single charge.
On the inside, the SE has a larger battery, which — when combined with the new design, iOS 15 and the A15 Bionic chip — gives the phone a longer battery life than the previous iPhone SE. Over the four days I had the SE, it had no trouble making it through a day on a single charge. I often ended the day with the battery between 20% and 30%. The one day I shot a bunch of videos and took lots of photos, the SE’s battery ended up at 19%. My screen time has averaged five and a half hours a day.
The iPhone Se And Its A15 Bionic Chip Outperform The Galaxy S22 Ultra
Apple’s A15 Bionic chip is perhaps the biggest addition to the iPhone SE. It’s the same one in the iPhone 13 that outperforms any other phone currently sold. It’s also powering most of the software enhancements this phone has over the 2020 iPhone SE.
In use, the SE flies and iOS animations look smooth. The only times the phone got warm was when I played games for more than 20 minutes. But I never noticed the SE getting hot, not even when recording 4K 60fps videos.
The A15 Bionic transforms the SE from just a classic throwback into one of the most powerful phones you can buy today.
In benchmark tests, the iPhone SE’s scores were right in line with those from the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. The SE had better scores than any other phone we’ve tested, including the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. The SE’s performance is even more impressive because only the most expensive Android phones have the best processors. Most low-cost Android phones have less powerful processors to help keep the costs down.

iPhone Se Review: Verdict
The $429 iPhone SE is a phone that straddles the future and the past. The A15 Bionic chip inside this phone delivers flagship power for hundreds less than the iPhone 13. And the image quality is mostly excellent despite being limited to a single rear camera. I just wish Apple found a way to include a proper Night mode.
And yet the design of the new iPhone SE looks like a throwback with its small 4.7-inch display and huge bezels around the display the iPhone 13 mini shows that you can cram a larger 5.4-inch display into a small phone, but it costs $699.
If you’re not insistent on buying an iPhone and living in the Apple ecosystem, the Google Pixel 5a is arguably a better bet, offering a larger 6.34-inch display, Night mode and considerably longer battery life for $449. But it’s also not nearly as fast as the new iPhone SE. However, the Pixel 6a is due to launch in July, which might give the new SE some more competition with its Tensor chip and dual camera system.
Overall, the iPhone SE mostly succeeds in terms of providing a great value. But next time I’d like to see a design that better matches the cutting edge vibe of the internals.

The iPhone SE is Apple’s entry-level iPhone, starting at $429. The device offers an affordable entry point to the iPhone lineup, with many important features such as a powerful A-series chip, a high-quality camera with 4K video recording, Haptic Touch, wireless charging, water and dust resistance, and more. What Isnt There An iPad Se Or Mac Se
Fine question, and one for which we can supply no good answer. With customers already familiar with the excellent value and performance that SE devices deliver, it would seem a straightforward decision to extend the branding across the entire Apple hardware range. At the moment theres the awkwardly named iPad that acts as the entry-point to the tablet range. Well, theyre all iPads, so calling one just iPad is a bit silly, not to mention confusing. Changing it to iPad SE would make perfect sense and also group it together with other products that people already love and respect.
For Macs its a bit more complicated, as there doesnt seem to be an SE style device around at the moment. The old ultra-thin MacBook could probably have filled the role, but it was never really noticeably cheaper than some of the other products. Seeing a Mac that retails at around £699/$699/699 that featured M1 chips and an older chassis design , would be a fantastic way to tempt Windows and Chromebook users away from their current hardware. Personally, Id love the MacBook Air design from 2015 brought back to occupy the lower price-point and make the MacBook SE a reality.

If youre feeling generous, the iPhone SE 3s design can be called retro, perhaps even iconic. But if you want to be blunt: the hardware looks very dated, because it is indeed very dated: those gigantic bezels sandwiching the 4.7-inch display the single rear camera with a jarringly small lens and an actual physical clicky home button. This is for the most part, the exact same outer shell as the iPhone 8, which was released in 2017. In 2022 and the age of huge multi-camera setups and large displays with minimal bezels, this design screams ancient.
If you’re feeling generous, the iPhone SE 3’s design can be called retro, perhaps even iconic. But bluntly, it’s outdated.
For me, after using large screens for so long, the 4.7-inch feels really cramped I had trouble typing the first half a day of use, but I eventually adjusted. Because of the bezels and the 16:9 aspect ratio, the iPhone SE 3 is still taller and wider than the iPhone 13 Mini, but the former is a more comfortable phone to hold, because its thinner, lighter and has rounded sides instead of the iPhone 13 Minis flat, angular sides.
