The iPhone 7 is undoubtedly a better phone than the iPhone SE by most standards.
Its much more powerful and has a significantly better screen, camera and storage options. The iPhone 7s 3D Touch also comes into play in iOS 10, which actually makes it more usable than the iPhone SE in certain ways, and the new phone will also survive a dip in the bath where the older phone wont.
But its not entirely one-sided. For one thing, some people continue to prefer truly compact phones, and the iPhone SE is much smaller than its tubby brother.
The iPhone SE actually has a 3.5mm headphones jack, the omission of which from the iPhone 7 has outraged a fair proportion of traditional iPhone users.
However, the biggest advantage the iPhone SE has, beside price, is battery life. We found that the smaller phone could get us through a day of usage much better than the iPhone 7, even with the SEs smaller battery. That will be a big factor for a lot of people.

iPhone 12 Vs iPhone Se: Battery Life
The iPhone SE doesn’t deliver much on the battery front. Apple doesn’t disclose the size of its phone batteries, but iPhone SE teardowns point to an 1,821 mAh power pack inside the device. That doesn’t translate to a very good battery life in our testing, which involves continuous web surfing over LTE until a fully charged phone runs out of power. The iPhone SE lasted just 9 hours and 18 minutes, which is below the average time of around 10 hours for a typical smartphone.
The iPhone 12 series hasn’t impressed in our battery test, either, with the exception of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple’s largest phone held out for an equally super-sized time of 10 hours and 53 minutes, falling just short of landing on our best phone battery life list. The iPhone 12 Pro made it past 9 hours, but the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini couldn’t beat the iPhone SE’s result.
The iPhone 12 series holds one advantage over the iPhone SE when it comes to charging. While all of these phones can charge wirelessly, only the new iPhone 12 models contain the magnets that work with Apple’s new MagSafe accessories. The magnets snap any compatible charging pad into place to ensure that you’re getting the strongest charge.

Portrait Mode debuted with the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016, but it’s only available on the larger model. The regular 4.7-inch iPhone 7 doesn’t support Portrait Mode.

Improved Camera With Portrait Mode
Apple’s older iPhones all had single-lens rear cameras, and the same is true of the 2020 iPhone SE. It’s equipped with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera that isn’t quite as good as the wide-angle camera in the iPhone 11, but it’s close.
Though there’s still a single-lens camera, Apple is using improved sensor technology in its modern iPhones, which means you’re going to see better photos from the iPhone SE than you see from the iPhone 6s and other older iPhones. The camera in the SE is better than the camera in the iPhone 8, and seems to be similar to the camera in the iPhone XR.
People coming to the 2020 iPhone SE from an older iPhone can expect bright, vivid photos with true-to-life colors and Smart HDR support, which means much better detail in the areas of the photos that are bright and dark. It’s not as good as the flagship iPhones at low light photography , but it’s a notable improvement over older devices.
That said, if photography is what you’re going for, you might want to take a look at the iPhone 11 as it has two-lens setup with an ultra wide-angle lens, but for every day use, the SE works great. It’s a fantastic smartphone camera at its price point.
As for video, the iPhone SE offers a lot for the asking price. It’s able to shoot 4K video at 60fps, the same as Apple’s flagship iPhones, with optical image stabilization and some other useful features like QuickTake video for capturing a quick video by holding down the shutter button while in photo mode.

The iPhone SE has the same external case design and dimensions as the iPhone 8. The camera bump and flash are also nearly identical in shape. With the exception of materials the iPhone 7 shape closely matches the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE.
Keep in mind that the iPhone SE back is made of glass to allow wireless charging. Metal cases of any kind placed over the back of the iPhone SE may prevent wireless chargers from making proper contact, making wireless charging impossible.

We mentioned the iPhone SE uses the A13 Bionic chipset, a processor that can outperform top-of-the-line Android devices. That means you’ve got flagship power in a sub-$400 device one of the iPhone SE’s main selling points.
The iPhone 12 outdoes that, though, with the A14 Bionic, a 5-nanometer processor that’s more powerful and power efficient than the 7nm A13.
