Face ID, introduced in 2017 with the iPhone X, is the biometric authentication system that’s used in the iPhone XS and XS Max, both of which feature a notch that houses the TrueDepth camera system that enables Face ID.

Face ID is just like Touch ID, except it uses a facial scan instead of a fingerprint, and Face ID in iPhone XS and XS Max is identical to Face ID in the iPhone X with the exception of speed improvements.

With the new A12 Bionic chip and Neural Engine improvements, Face ID is able to detect your face and unlock your device faster than before.

Face ID is used across the iOS operating system for tasks like unlocking your iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming purchases in iTunes and the App Store, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.

Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras built into the front of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS, called the TrueDepth Camera system. To create a facial scan, a Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto your face, which are then read by an infrared camera.

This depth map of your face is then relayed to the A12 Bionic processor where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to make sure it’s you attempting to access your iPhone.

Unboxing The Apple iPhone Xs Max

Well, this iPhone may deserve the Max moniker, but its retail bundle is eXtra Small for a flagship. Just like the XS, the XS Max comes packed with Apple’s tiny 5W charger, a Lightning cable, and a pair of EarPods. That’s it.

What’s in the box

The iPhone XS Max supports both wireless charging and fast wired charging, though obviously, you can’t benefit from either out of the box. This year Apple has also ditched the 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter, so if you need one – that’ll be extra $9.

The good news is the iPhone XS Max is compatible with all Qi-certified chargers, so you have plenty to choose from.

The bad news is if you want to use fast wired charging, you’ll have to buy both the charger and the USB-C-to-Lightning cable from Apple. And that’ll be extra $70, you’re welcome!

And what’s NOT in the box

We can all agree it’s a bummer that Apple isn’t shipping its most expensive smartphones with a fast charger, but there is one very good explanation why. It’s simple – Apple doesn’t want you to fast charge your iPhone.

Unlike Oppo, Apple doesn’t have VOOC-like tech and relies on the regular USB-C Power Delivery chargers bundled with the latest MacBooks. Using such chargers will likely shorten the battery’s overall lifespan.

The Apple iPhone X features a stainless steel core with a glass front and back, allowing for wireless charging. There is a vertically aligned dual camera on the rear and a notch at the top of the display on the front.

The X comes in Space Grey and Silver colour options, measures 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 174g. It is IP67 water and dust resistant.

The iPhone XS and XS Max successors continue to offer a stainless steel core with a glass rear and front, a notched display and a vertically aligned dual camera on the back. The XS Max is larger than both the iPhone XS and X, but the design remains the same across the three devices. Improvements have been made for Wi-Fi and cellular transmissions in the XS and XS Max however.

The iPhone XS measures 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 177g, making it almost identical to the iPhone X, so it’s very much a replacement for that phone. The XS Max meanwhile, measures 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm and weighs 208g, so it’s more tailored towards the Plus user.

Both are IP68 protected, and they come in Space Grey and Silver colour options, as well as a new Gold colour which is lovely.

How To Turn Off iPhone Xs Via Assistivetouch

There’s a little chance that the shutdown slider will come up or respond if your iPhone XS Side button or Volume button is broken and not working well, let alone be moved to switch off the phone.

That being said, you can restart iPhone XS using AssistiveTouch even though you can’t open any apps or the buttons are not responding to power down. The first thing is to activate AssistiveTouch. On your iPhone XS , go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch, tap AssistiveTouch and turn it on. Now, a dark square with a white circle will appear on your iPhone XS screen.

Next, tap the AssistiveTouch shortcut in iPhone XS screen. To turn it off, go through Device > More > Restart. When prompted if you wish to restart your iPhone XS , select Restart to confirm. If this works for you, your iPhone XS can turn off now, and will then turn back on and boot up to the Home screen without the need of a Power button.

First things first, the camera. The big difference between the XS and the XS Max versus the XR is that the former two have two lenses, while the latter only has one. That means while you can still zoom with the iPhone XR, you cant zoom in as far as you can with the iPhone XS.

The other thing youll notice about the camera in the XR is that you can only use the True Depth filter on human faces. With the iPhone XS, you can use True Depth on any object you select in the frame. Which, lets be honest, will only become a problem when youre trying to take super artistic photos of your pet and turn them into a furfluencer.

There was a general dispute in the community as to whether the camera actually “intended” to “perfect” faces or if they just appeared that way as result of a better quality camera.

Apple said that these results were due to the Smart HDR algorithm incorrectly selecting the blurrier long exposure as its base frame instead of the sharpest short exposure. The issue was resolved with the release of iOS 12.1 on October 30, 2018.
