iPhone 12 MagSafe: How it works with Apple’s new cases and chargers

Image: Apple

Every iPhone 12 comes with a Lightning-to-USB-C cable, and thats pretty much it. So out of the box, those who don’t currently have any Apple power adapters will need a USB-C power adapter to charge the iPhone 12.

Plus, this is the first iPhone to ship without EarPods, so you’ll need to supply your own headphones to listen to music and podcasts. Apple sells its own AirPods wireless earbuds, but there are plenty of alternatives that won’t break the bank, not to mention our picks for best wireless headphones and those made with runners in mind.

As Apple explained during its iPhone 12 event, excluding the power adapter reduces the size of the box. This means 70% more devices can fit on a shipping pallet, which means more iPhone 12 devices can ship to users. Smaller boxes also allow Apple to reduce yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons, it says.

Apple’s Stance On Commonality Between Adapters

At the heart of the issue remains Apple’s point about e-waste and stifling innovation.

“The European Commission argues that further harmonisation would lead to increased consumer convenience,” says the Impact report, “as they would be able to charge not only mobile phones but potentially also other portable devices with a common cable , as well as being offered the option of retaining existing chargers and purchasing mobile phones without chargers for a lower price.”

“A harmonised solution, according to the Commission’s initial analysis, is also expected to reduce the number of counterfeit chargers in the market,” it continues, “reduce the import needs of chargers , and reduce electronic waste.”

The same report, though, separately argues that if it’s successful in stopping phone vendors always providing a charger, counterfeits will increase.

“However, the higher decoupling scenarios would also be likely to lead to a certain growth in the market for standalone chargers and, by extension, in the sales of unsafe and/or counterfeit chargers,” the Commission says.

The fact that counterfeit chargers may increase or decrease, is typical of the detail in the Commission’s findings which also demands both standardization and innovation.

“At the same time, the Commission recognises that any further harmonisation should not limit innovation, i.e. the development and diffusion of new generations of chargers,” it says.

iPhone 11 Xr And Se No Longer Come With Earpods And Power Adapter But Usb

Apple’s new iPhone 12 models don’t come with EarPods or a power adapter in the box in order to save on packaging materials to reduce environmental impact, and following today’s event, Apple has removed the power adapter and EarPods from the box for all other iPhone models as well.

As was rumored this morning, the iPhone 11, XR, and SE will no longer be shipped with power adapters or EarPods, much like the iPhone 12 models. This will allow Apple to use new, slimmer packaging.

All of the iPhone models will, however, come with a USB-C to Lightning cable, an upgrade from the standard USB-A to Lightning cable that used to be included.

Despite rumors that Apple would introduce a Lightning cable with a braided design, that did not happen, and iPhones new and old ship with a standard Apple-designed rubber USB-C to Lightning cable.

Cons Of Wireless Charging

How Do I Charge My Phone? Powerstick.com

It may seem like a no-brainer to go wireless. But there are some disadvantages of wireless charging.

Its slow: Wireless charging typically takes 30-80% longer to fully charge your device than a cable. Keep in mind: how you place your device on the mat can affect how long it takes to charge. And even in an ideal setup, 20% of the power running through your device will be wasted not great in terms of conserving energy.

You cant use your phone: Your device has to stay on the mat while its charging, meaning you cant pick it up and use it in the way you can when its plugged into a charging cable.

Its more expensive: Wireless chargers are a relatively new technology with a hefty price tag, especially compared to cables. Depending on the size, they can cost anywhere between $40 and $100.

Pro tip: Larger pads can charge multiple devices, potentially resulting in some cost savings.

As smart devices continue to advance, wireless charging will likely become the norm. Until then, weigh the pros and cons, and keep an eye on the latest phone accessories to help you decide if youre ready for this new technology.

Anker Powerline Iii Flow Usb C To Lightning Cable

Anker’s powerline III MFi-certified USB C to lightning cable claims to be its softest texture-wise and the strongest for avoiding fraying and tears. That’s thanks to a combination of copper wires, flexible graphene, and a soft silicone gel exterior. Beyond functionality, it also nails the aesthetics, taking the millennial pastel route . Besides the standard white and black, Anker’s cords also come in the delicate grey purple seen here, seafoam green, and pinkall edged in rose gold.

Whats The Best Way To Charge My iPhone 12

The best way to charge the iPhone 12 is to use the included USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C charger.

Apple will suggest you use its 20W USB-C charger. There are plenty of good third-party chargers like this 2-port charger from Anker, and many others available online.

Using a USB-C cable and USB-C charger will allow the iPhone to charge at faster speeds. Using USB-C, you can charge the iPhone to 50% in about half an hour. The highest wattage the iPhone 12 will use is around 22 watts, so a 20 watt or 30 watt charger will result in the about same charging speed. But basically any USB-C charger will be significantly faster than the old USB-A chargers.

iPhone And Android Wireless Charger Pads 201: Which One Is The Best

Choosing a Qi charger pad for your smartphone is not as easy as it sounds.

Which Qi charging pad to use?

If you’re a new iPhone 11, Samsung Galaxy S10/Note 10, or Pixel 4 owner, you probably know one of the advertised features of each device is their ability to wirelessly charge.

There are many charging pads on the market, but picking one that is optimized for your phone is not easy. We’ve narrowed it down to these four manufacturers to simplify this process for you.

Why Is Apple Selling iPhone 12 Without A Charger

iPhone 6 Plus Fast Charging: 5W charger VS Apple 12 Watt USB power adapter, charging time comparison

I think this is a two-fold answer. I think some of this is about saving Apple money. Not money on manufacturing so much, though, as money on shipping. Apple isn’t just removing the chargers and headphones from iPhone boxes it’s actually shrinking the boxes themselves.

And this is where Apple’s economic needs and environmental messaging shake hands. Because smaller boxes mean that more iPhones can be packed into shipping pallets. More iPhones per pallet means more iPhones per flight. More iPhones per flight means fewer overall cargo flights. This not only reduces Apple’s shipping bill, but it also brings down its overall carbon footprint.

While it’s easy to take a fully cynical view of Apple’s environmental stances, the fact of the matter is that the company continues to make these environmentally-friendly moves. But the key here is that they don’t have to do it. Nothing is requiring Apple to be more environmentally friendly. Yet it is. It’s hard work, and it costs Apple not a little money to do things like go carbon neutral at its facilities.

So yeah, there are cynical business reasons to remove the chargers. Of course. But the amount of e-waste these components produce is no joke. Apple’s Lisa Jackson said this move is the equivalent of removing some 450,000 cars from the road every year. That isn’t nothing, even if it kind of sucks for people who need a charging brick.

Is It Worth Upgrading If I Have An iPhone 12

It depends on. If you’re somebody who needs to be on the cutting edge of smartphone photography or you’ve had issues with the iPhone 12’s battery life, then I think making the jump to an iPhone 13 makes sense. That said, Apple is so ahead of the curve when it comes to chip processor and mobile photography that the iPhone 12 is still an absurdly good camera, so waiting another year to upgrade isn’t the end of the world.

Also, if the rumors are true, the iPhone 14 is expected to be the one to get the “big” redesign.

What Are The Tradeoffs With The iPhone 13 Mini

The only tradeoff with the iPhone 13 mini is how fast it’s able to charge over MagSafe. Just like last year’s iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 13 mini charges a little slower over MagSafe compared to other iPhone 13 models. It charges at a max of 12-watts instead of 15-watts.

The reasoning is that the iPhone 13 mini has a smaller battery and Apple likely doesn’t want to risk overheating. Also, Apple likely believes that most iPhone 13 mini users likely won’t notice the drop off in speed because the smaller battery fills up quickly and it’s still much faster that the he max 7.5-watts speed that all iPhones can pull from a Qi-based wireless charger.

Aside from MagSafe charging speeds, screen size and battery life, the iPhone 13 mini has all the exact same features as the iPhone 13.

How To Tell Which Apple Charger To Use With Your iPhone/ipad/ipod/watch

Tweet This

If you happen to own more than one of Apples mobile iOS devices –the iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch– or you live in a household where there are multiple generations of of the products present, then at one point or another youve undoubtedly asked yourself: which Apple charger can I use? Should I throw out that little one from a few years ago, or can I keep it as a spare?

A typical rats nest of new and old Apple chargers .

After a few years, we all inevitably end up with a drawer thats a tangled mess of white cables and white USB chargers stamped with the Apple logo. Theyre different sizes, but most accept a USB cable. If look closely at the fine print, some are labelled as 5W, some as 10W and you may have a 12W one. How do you tell which is safe to use with any given Apple product?

Start With Cables

This part is easy, but I may as well mention it. Apple mobile devices began switching to the current Lightning connector cable in 2012. Earlier devices used a much larger 30-pin cable. Both cable styles can be used with an Apple USB charger , but you need to make sure you have the appropriate cable. Oh, and the Apple Watch requires an entirely new magnetic charging cable.

Which Apple Charger?

The good news is that its a lot less complicated than you might think.

This little 5W Apple charger is standard issue with iPhones and the Apple Watch.

Next along is the 10W Apple Charger, introduced with the iPad.

What About Wireless Charging

Apple supports fast wireless charging up to 7.5 watts. You can use any Qi-compatible wireless charging mat, like this one from Anker or this one from Belkin. Wireless charging is convenient and safe but it is not the fastest way to charge an iPhone. As the phone gets hotter on the pad, the amount of charge is reduced to protect the battery. This means wireless charging is slower than charging via a USB-C cable.

The iPhone 12 also includes a magnetic area on the back of the device, called MagSafe. This can be used with MagSafe accessories like the Apple MagSafe puck charger or the Belkin MagSafe dock. MagSafe is essentially a better version of Qi as the magnets auto-align with the case. Using the secure magnetic attachment, Apple enables up to 15 watt charging for MagSafe chargers. So for the best wireless charging, choose MagSafe over Qi but the USB-C cable is still the fastest overall.

Does Magsafe Work With A Case

Short answer: Yes. But there are caveats.

Those who want to protect their iPhone 12 with a case and make use of MagSafe magnetic charging will need a MagSafe-compatible accessory. Naturally, Apple is selling several MagSafe chargers and a magnetic wallet on Apple.com. Third parties, like Belkin and Otterbox, have their own MagSafe products, too.

If you have a non-MagSafe case without the magnet, you should be able to charge it with the MagSafe charger as it’s Qi wireless compatible, but it won’t snap on to the case.

Airpods And Apple Watch

You’ve probably noticed that your Airpods and other Bluetooth headphones may have wireless charging cases, and your Apple Watch also has a magnetic charging connector. Can you use just any charging pad to charge them? The answer is, maybe. Possibly.

Mophie 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad

While the AirPods charging case uses Qi, there’s no guarantee that a third-party charger is going to mate correctly with it unless it is specially designed for it.

Additionally, the Apple Watch itself doesn’t use Qi it uses its special magnetic connector. That’s why several manufacturers, such as Belkin and Mophie, have made 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 charging docks to support the iPhone, the AirPods, and the Apple Watch, simultaneously. Apple attempted to create a 3-in-1 pad to support all three products, the AirPower, but it failed to launch the product due to difficult engineering issues.
