One of my favourite things about the iPhone is that Im able to share its 3G data connection with a Mac by tethering it. Its incredibly useful when I need to do some real work but cant get to a coffeeshop. or the available public Wi-Fi is awful.

Although Im saying iPhone, if youve got a 3G capable iPad the process is the exact same.

Whether you’re able to create a personal hotspot or not with an iPhone depends on the service plan youre on. The plan from my network provider draws no distinction between data used by my iPhone and data it shares over a personal hotspot but that is not always the case.

Some plans, especially in the US, require you to pay extra to be able to share the Internet connection. If the options dont appear in Settings, its probably because your plan prevents tethering the iPhone.

Assuming your particular network provider allows you to share your Internet connection, open the Settings app on the iPhone. Select Personal Hotspot and turn the switch On. By default iOS will create a Wi-Fi password but you can set your own by entering a new one.

With Personal Hotspot you can share a connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB. Youll need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on if you want to use them. If theyre not, iOS will prompt you to do so. Its only possible to share the iPhones data connection you cant use it as a repeater to share a Wi-Fi connection.

Use Your iPhone As A Personal Wi

Youre on a trip, accompanied by your trusty iPhone and MacBook Air. Suddenly theres an emergency at work, and you need to get online with your Mac. You can pick up a cell signal with the iPhone, but theres no Wi-Fi to be foundwhat to do?

Never fear, since you can use your iPhones cellular data plan to create a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that lets your Mac access the Internet through your iPhone. Also called tethering, its fast, easy, and can be a life-saver when you just have to get online with a Mac .

Before we explain how to do set up a personal hotspot, note that most but not all cellular carriers allow tethering on existing plans. For some, you might have to pay more for tethering. Regardless, any data consumed by your Mac while tethered will count against your data allowance and may generate overage fees. Carriers with unlimited data, like T-Mobile and Sprint, generally throttle your bandwidth to slower speeds if you use too much data.

Along those lines, if you use a file-sharing service like Dropbox or Google Drive, or an Internet backup service like CrashPlan or Backblaze, turn them off before connecting. Particularly if they havent connected in a while, those services can transfer a lot of data quickly, which could result in a hefty overage charge or awkward data throttling for the rest of the month.

  • Once youve entered a password, enable the Personal Hotspot switch.
