iPhone 1: Magsafe & Qi Wireless Charging Options Explained

LK Wireless Charger, Qi Wireless Charging Pad Stand for ...

The iPhone 12 series supports Qi charging and there are good reasons to use it, in addition to the faster and more convenient MagSafe solution.

There are multiple ways to charge an iPhone 12 with Apple providing two wireless standards as well as the older wired connection. Plugging the iPhone 12 into a wall adapter remains the fastest option, but not the most convenient. Wireless is an easy choice when a charger will be handy throughout the day and for overnight where the fastest charging speed isnt critical.

Apple introduced a new charging method with the iPhone 12 series. Using an array of magnets for alignment and attachment, the MagSafe charger can reach 15-watts of power and supply this to the iPhone 12 consistently. Since the magnets guide the phone to the perfect placement, no power is lost, which was a common problem with Qi chargers. MagSafe also supports cases and other accessories, so Apple incorporated an NFC sensor and magnetometer to identity whether a charger or other type of accessory is attached. Apples clever use of the new connection means a MagSafe case can be left on the iPhone 12 while charging with a MagSafe charger. The connection and power is passed through the case to the phone.

How Does The iPhone 11 Fast Charge

The iPhone 11 fast charges using USB Power Delivery technology. PD is an industry standard used to fast charge any compatible device, such as the iPhone 11.

Technically, there are two separate, yet incredibly similarly PD fast charging options for the iPhone 11. Their charging speeds are nearly identical and equally efficient. See the slight variation between the two below.

  • PD protocol fast charging
  • The iPhone 11 supports charging using the standard Power Delivery charging protocol.
  • Any third-party PD-certified charger will charge your phone at nearly optimal efficacy.
  • PD protocol + Apples custom hardware
  • Apples charge supports the standard PD charging protocol and adds some slight modifications on top of the PD protocol.
  • Apples adapters also contain custom hardware that recognizes when another Apple device is plugged in. The Apple hardware in the iPhone and charging adapter communicate more verbosely to create a most optimized, efficient charge for the iPhones battery.
  • Both of these fast charging methods require a wall charger. The iPhone 11 does NOT support wireless fast charging at 15W.

  • 18W+ fast chargers can recharge your phone from 0% to 50% in approximately 30 minutes.
  • Apples USB-C 18W+ power adapters are the best option to charge your iPhone 11.
  • Apples custom hardware in the iPhone 11 and the custom hardware in their branded, certified wall adapters uniquely communicate with one another.
  • This gives the iPhone 11 optimal fast charging efficiency.
  • Can The iPhone 11 Wirelessly Charge

    Short answer: Yes

Because of the iPhone 11s glass back, you can use any Qi wireless charger with your fancy smartphone. To get a bit more technical, the glass back of the iPhone allows for charging currents to easily pass through the back of the phone and into the Qi-enabled battery. Theres a lot more science-y stuff to it, but you get the idea.

Older phones, and some from other companies, use metal in their construction, and while that will be a bit stronger, metal is not a great conduit for charging your phone wirelessly.

Charging Pad Might Be Incompatible Or Defective

Its not uncommon for the wireless charger to fail to charge the iPhone due to defects or incompatibility of models. So even if your iPhone model supports wireless charging, the charging pad might not be a compatible one. Or worse, it might be defective.

To see if its not a compatibility issue, try charging another device that supports wireless charging on your charging pad. If it works with the test device, you might be dealing with a compatibility issue after all.

But if it doesnt charge the test device, the wireless charging pad might be defective. So try swapping it for another. Whatever the outcome, its best to get another compatible one for your iPhone.

    What Is The Qi Standard

Qi enabled Fast Car Wireless Charger Dashboard, 10W/7.5W Charger for iPhone 12 All Qi Devices

What does Qi stand for? Qi is a universal standard for wireless charging and was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium in 2008. It is technically based on the principle of induction, in which electromagnetic waves are used to transfer energy wirelessly over short distances. The chargers are therefore also referred to as induction chargers or inductive chargers. The Qi standard is currently used in smartphones and other small devices and has become established as a wireless charging standard.

The advantage of Qi-capable mobile phones is that wireless charging is possible with all Qi chargers, regardless of the manufacturer. Above all, it is much more convenient in everyday life if you can charge your mobile phone wirelessly instead of having to connect it to the charging cable. With the Qi standard, there are currently several different power levels , but they always remain downward compatible. You will find information on this in the smartphone description. The best Qi chargers and all others in comparison can be found under the overview in the test area.

When it comes to Qi phones, some smartphone manufacturers are among the forerunners, others instead of the laggards nevertheless, this technology had arrived on the broad mass market in 2022. Many current smartphones have already firmly established this standard. You can find more information on the topic of wireless charging in the article Wireless charging What is the Qi standard?
