Its true that most people no longer comparison shop for phones. Now were members of iPhone and Android tribes. Apple puts a lot of effort into keeping us members, with services such as iMessage, iCloud Photos and other services that make switching way more trouble than most people would ever consider. I call it the happy trap.

In Silicon Valley, this is usually the point where either some new technology comes along and disrupts the old guard or the government steps in and lays down rules that give some power back to consumers.

Can I Save Money By Getting An Older Model

Everyone tells me I can just get an 11 for much less which will be as good or almost as good as the best 12, writes Laura Haggarty, from rural Kentucky.

Thats true. 5G isnt coming to people like Haggarty any time soon, so the iPhone 11 is a good deal now at $600. Or you can spend even less $400 on this years iPhone SE, which is just as fast as the 11.

If you had an 11 and a 12 in each hand, as I do now, the difference youd feel is a new design. The 12 brings back something iPhones havent had for years: squared-off edges. It makes the phone feel more sophisticated and easier to hold. Apple also cut away some of the excess along the edges, so its a bit lighter and more compact.

The 12 has a new processor, which I suppose feels a bit faster, but Im not sure I could spot it in a blind test of the apps I use every day.

The 12 also works with a new kind of wireless charger called MagSafe that, as the name implies, magnetically snaps into place. Thats nice, but involves buying even more new stuff from Apple, which is the opposite of saving money.

The iPhone 11 is an LTE-only device, and if you don’t care for the next-gen wireless tech just yet , then the iPhone 11 should suit you just fine. Remember that 5G debuted on the iPhone 12 lineup and getting access to faster bands of 5G depends on where you live, so going for the iPhone 12 makes your purchase more future-proof.

Apple’s Future iPhone 5g Lineup

Rumor suggests that 2021 5G iPhone lineup coming in September also includes “mini,” “Pro,” and “Pro Max” variants. There may not be changes in the major design, but we expect to see an improved camera, a faster A15 processor, increased battery life, etc.

In terms of the 5G support, the next-gen iPhone appears to come with a Qualcomm X60 5G modem. With this new 5G chip and a greater battery capacity, the new iPhone can deliver greater 5G performance and last longer when connected to 5G networks.

Therefore, if you want to upgrade from an iPhone 11 to a 5G-supported iPhone and don’t mind waiting, the upcoming iPhone 13 seems to be a better upgrade than iPhone 12.

We strongly expect three 5G-ready iPhones to be released in the autumn of 2020 – although one report suggests they will appear later in the autumn than is usual for Apple’s phone updates.

In 2018 it was reported that Apple was working on a 5G modem with Intel, but apparently insoluble connectivity problems cropped up in testing. Neither Intel or later supplier candidate MediaTek were able to supply 5G components for an autumn 2019 launch.

We now expect a 2020 launch, but until Apple reached an agreement with Qualcomm, it was thought that Apple’s iPhone 5G might not arrive until 2021. UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri had told 9to5Mac at the beginning of April 2019 that Apple was targeting 2021 for the 5G iPhone release, and described even that as a “technical hurdle”.

There were a few reasons for the delay, but these have since been rectified. As a result, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple’s 5G iPhone will arrive in the second half of 2020.

In an April 2019 research note, reported by MacRumors, Kuo wrote: “Apple and Qualcomm’s end of patent dispute and entrance into a six-year licensing deal implies new 2H20 iPhone models will support 5G.” He reiterated this prediction in June 2019, writing: “The 6.7in and 5.4in OLED iPhone models will likely support 5G.”

And on 28 July 2019 Kuo responded to the Intel modems acquisition with a further research note in which he predicted that all three late-2020 iPhone models would support 5G.

Which Version Of 5g Will The iPhone Get

The version everyone is hoping for is known as millimetre wave, or mmWave most existing offerings are based instead on mid-band or sub-6GHz 5G, which is faster than 4G but slower than mmWave. Opinions differ over whether or not Apple will roll out mmWave support right away.

Susquehanna analyst Mehdi Hosseini believes Apple will go for a staggered approach, giving us a mid-band 5G iPhone in September 2020 and releasing an enhanced mmWave version three or four months later. Ming-Chi Kuo, on the other hand, thinks there will be mmWave iPhones available at the initial launch in September.

We find Hosseini’s rationale confusing, since it will obviously encourage buyers to put off an upgrade and leave the iPhone 12 launch as a damp squib or massively annoy those who buy the iPhone 12 when it comes out . Either way this seems like a recipe for discontent.

We’re therefore more convinced by the idea that Apple will release a mmWave iPhone in September 2020. At least that way it can bring something new and impressive to the 5G party that it’s late for.

5G doesn’t only cost money. In the phones we’ve tested, using the very fastest 5G technology, called millimeter wave, can chew through your phone’s battery as well, especially in hot weather.

But longer battery life is one theme of this year’s iPhone 11 haul. The most entry-level model among them is designed to last up to an hour longer than last year’s iPhone XR, with the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max set to run up to four and five hours longer than the iPhone XS and XS Max, respectively.

Perhaps by the time the first 5G iPhone comes along, the choice won’t be as blunt.

After decades of covering consumer electronics, Im quite confident that Apple will still sell plenty of iPhone 11s this year despite their lack of 5G support, the same way Nintendo kept selling NES game consoles and games well after the Super NES was released. Not everyone needs to be on the cutting edge of technology.

Just like the iPhone 3G and iPhone 5, I would certainly want to buy an iPhone with next-generation cellular capabilities on day one, rather than waiting around. Over the next year, still waiting data speeds will give way to levels of immediacy that most people will find amazing, fueling new applications that go well beyond what people use today.

Youll need a 5G device to experience this sort of performance, so if youre buying a 4G phone today, youre doing so at a point when every major phone carrier, every major government, and every major device and component manufacturer has already taken significant steps towards bringing 5G to the public. What Maximum Speeds Do The Different iPhones Support

The iPhone 12 range all support 5G as noted, with Apple claiming that they can theoretically reach speeds of up to 4Gbps in real-world conditions. The iPhone 13 range also supports 5G and presumably has the same theoretical speeds, though Apple hasnt confirmed at the time of writing.

Apple additionally claimed that the iPhone 12 range supported more 5G bands than any other smartphone at the time of their launch, and the iPhone 13 range supports even more than that meaning these phones should be able to tap into the full 5G potential of more networks across the world.

As for the older models, none of them support 5G, but the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max do support Gigabit LTE, which is a very fast form of 4G, which in this case uses 4×4 MIMO and is capable of attaining peak download speeds of 1.6Gbps, or 1,600Mbps.

Technically the iPhone 11, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are capable of similar, but Apple has made additional speed improvements for the 11 Pro models, having moved on from Cat 16 to Cat 19.

This makes the iPhone 11 Pro range theoretically significantly faster than the iPhone XS range, as well as the iPhone SE which is also Cat 16 – and several times faster than the iPhone X and iPhone XR, both of which pack lesser Cat 12 LTE modems.

Magsafe For The iPhone 12 And iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro use a fun new “MagSafe” magnetic accessory system. The name was first used back when Apple’s MacBook chargers had magnets that held them in place.

MagSafe is used for wireless charging and for sticking accessories to the back of your iPhone. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro still work with regular wireless charging pads, but they’ll juice up twice as fast â 15 watts instead of 7.5 watts â with the MagSafe charger. It magnetically sticks to the back of the phone.

MagSafe works well, though I wish the charging puck didn’t slide off tables so easily. Apple partners such as Belkin are building some pretty nice stands, though, and Apple says more MagSafe products are coming.

Apple’s new cases work with MagSafe, too, so the wireless charging puck still attaches even if you have a case on. You can attach things like a new leather wallet to the back of the iPhone 12, though I found that the magnet wasn’t strong enough to keep the wallet on while it was sliding around in in my pocket.

Oh, and the MagSafe charger works with older iPhones that have wireless charging, they just don’t attach magnetically.

MagSafe is a fun new system. It’ll probably help drive accessory revenue even more for Apple. I’m excited to see what Apple and its partners bring in the future.
