Turn On Push Data For Your Email Accounts

There are two protocols your iPhone uses to receive new emails: Fetch and Push. With Fetch, your iPhone checks for new emails on the server at set periods. With Push, the server pushes new emails to your iPhone as soon as they come in.

If your Mail app notifications arent working or your emails are delayed, change the email account to Push:

  • Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts.
  • Turn on Push at the top of the screen.
  • Tap each email account and set the schedule to Push, if you can.
  • If you choose Fetch instead, select a schedule at the bottom of the screen.
  • Push

    It Wasnt The Phone Itself

Laura went to a nearby Apple Store, told them her story, and they sold her a nice new iPhone 7, hoping it would solve her problem. She left the iPhone 7 in the box for me to set up upon her return to Los Angeles.

At this point, the old iPhone still didnt work right. Actually, the only thing it had trouble with was Mail the iPhone would not send nor receive email unless the iPhone was on WiFi. Everything else worked fine Messages, phone calls, Weather, other apps.

The old iPhone was backed up to iCloud, so I set up the new one by restoring that backup to it. Restoring a backup to a new iPhone can be a very lengthy process, as this one was, but I had to wait it out to see if the new phone could get mail when not on WiFi. When the new iPhone was ready I tested sending and receiving email over WiFi, and it worked perfectly . Then I turned WiFi off and tried doing it over cellular and it did NOT work.

Now I knew we had a software problem, because the new iPhone had the exact symptom exhibited by the old iPhone. In effect Id copied the problem to the new iPhone.

Why Does Email Disappear From iPhone Inbox

It is quiet annoying to lose the valuable emails from your iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max/XR/XS/XS Max/X/8 Plus/8/7 Plus/7/6s Plus/6s/6 Plus/6/5S/SE with no reason. Relax, you can check the possible reasons as follows before fixing email disappearing from iPhone issue.

    1. Improper Mail Settings. iPhone allows you to customize the Mail app with several mail settings. If the Mail app is not set up properly, it may lead to mails disappearing from iPhone inbox.

    2. System Error. Even though iPhone acts as one of the most advanced digital devices on the world, the iPhone system crashes issue happens from time to time. The system error is one of the common reasons to cause mails disappearing from iPhone inbox.

    3. Misconfigure POP3 to IMAP. Most desktop email programs are configured to use POP3 email fetching protocol. And by default, the POP3 moves or download the email from the email server to your computer. As a result, the email is copied to your computer and removed from the email server. However, most of email programs on on mobile phone use a different protocol called IMAP to access email. And IMAP simply make a copy without removing emails from email server unless you set up that, and importantly, the email server is the official place to keep the emails, not your device. In a word, there is a conflict between POP3 and IMAP, which causes emails disappearing from iPhone.

The Fix For The iPhone That Wouldnt Get Mail Over Cellular

I looked at Cellular again. Yes, it was on. But this time, I scrolled down. This revealed a section of Cellulars settings that I hadnt looked at. Its called Use Cellular Data For: and heres how it looked .

Scrolling down a little more I saw this:

I was very, very surprised to find that Use Cellular Data For was turned OFF for Mail! So many apps were allowed, but not Mail. Naturally I flipped the switch for Mail to On and the problem went away.

Note: if, for some reason, you turn Use Cellular Data For to OFF for Mail, youll get a big warning telling you your mail wont work right if you do that. Apparently, with Lauras iPhone, the warning was not shown, or not seen, or not understood certainly not remembered.

UPDATE: in iOS 13, Mails settings include the Use Cellular Data switch. If you turn it on here, it turns it on in the Cellular Data/Use Cellular Data For section. One setting, in two places. Looks like this:

Icloud Plus Private Relay Feature Encrypts Web Traffic

Apple also announced the paid subscribers to iCloud Plus will get a couple of new privacy features.

One of them is Safari’s private relay feature, which is designed to hide an individual’s web browsing behavior from advertisers and internet service providers. It’ll do this by encrypting the traffic leaving an Apple device, so that it cannot be intercepted by third-parties including Apple, who can then go on to read what’s being searched for.

The second feature is called hide my email. If you’re a subscriber, it will let you enter a randomly generated email when you’re signing up for things — such as a new account with an online retailer — and the feature will have whatever it’s sent forwarded directly to your actual email address. The idea is that fewer companies will have access to people’s direct email addresses.
