With an IP68 rating, all the new iPhone 13 models are water and dust resistant. This matches up with what weve come to expect from the iPhone 12, which also had the same protection. While the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have a new smaller notch, their screen sizes remain the same as on the iPhone 12 models.
The iPhone 13 mini features a 5.4-inch Super Retina display, while the screen on the standard iPhone 13 is 6.1 inches. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come with display sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively.
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are in five colours: pink, blue, midnight , starlight and Product . The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are available in a range of four new colours, including Sierra Blue, gold, graphite and silver.
iPhone 12 Review: Video
Apple has gone all in on 4K HDR video recording with the iPhone 12 line. Like the iPhone 12 and Pro Max, the regular iPhone 12 can record Dolby Vision video, albeit only at 30 frames per second to the Pro models 60. Dolby Vision is a type of HDR encoding that goes beyond the standard HDR10 format to provide superior color depth, while ensuring a consistent visual presentation as closely aligned to the source material as possible, no matter where or how the content is viewed.
It may be hard to visualize, but trust us on this one the difference is immediately clear when observing the same content side-by-side in HDR and SDR. I recorded a short video in a park as the sun descended behind the trees, and the gap in contrast in each instance was eye-opening. For one, the sky was markedly brighter in the Dolby Vision capture, and I could actually make out individual leaves and trees reflecting the sun. These aspects were faded, washed out and obscured in the SDR take, and as someone who has been using an iPhone 11 Pro for video for the better part of a year, I had no idea what Id been missing.
Now, to be fair, the iPhone 12 is far from the only smartphone out there that can shoot HDR video. However, it is the only Dolby Vision-certified one, and I can definitely say that HDR video Ive shot on our Galaxy S20 Plus has never looked anywhere near as good unedited as what the iPhone 12 churns out by default.
iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 1: Design And Display
From a design standpoint, there’s not much difference between the iPhone 13 vs. the iPhone 12 save for one very visible exception. That would be the notch on the iPhone 13, which is smaller on all four new models . Otherwise, the look of the phones is the same, with the same flat edges and Ceramic Shield displays for greater durability.
The new models do weigh a bit more probably because of the bigger batteries Apple has included with the iPhone 13 and there are new color options. A Pink model joins the black , white , blue and Product colors on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. The new color for the iPhone 13 Pro lineup is Sierra Blue, which joins graphite, gold and silver options.
It’s the displays where Apple has made the biggest changes from the iPhone 12, though the AMOLED panels used in the iPhone 13 lineup are the same size as their predecessors. Instead, Apple is promising brighter displays 28% brighter than the iPhone 12’s screens in fact. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini can produce 800 nits of brightness while the iPhone 13 Pro models crank things up to 1,000 nits.
In testing, we recorded 795 nits of brightness for the iPhone 13 and 788 nits for the iPhone 13 mini. That’s better than both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini . The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max nites) are terrifically bright, too.

How has Apples smartphone changed?
The iPhone 12 represents a stark departure from its predecessors, courtesy of a completely refreshed design and some notably improved components.
With many an iPhone XR owner due for an upgrade after a long two-year contract, its the iPhone 12 thats likely to be in their crosshairs. So how much of a step up does the iPhone 12 present? And is the iPhone XR still a viable purchase in 2021?
The two-year gap between the release of these handsets represents a long time in the smartphone world. Lets see if Apple has put that development time to good use.
iPhone 1: Battery Life

It looks like Apple is continuing its trend of making sure the standard iPhone is packing good longevity, with the iPhone 12 seeing improvements to battery life that mean fewer trips to the charger.
Apple’s clearly done some work here to ensure that things arent quite so, well, dire when it comes to power management, and in our time with the iPhone 12 we found that it lasted well enough on a full charge, especially compared to iPhones of a few years earlier. That said, its not another leap forward in battery life – its comparable to the iPhone 11 at best, and maybe a tiny bit worse.
For instance, we found that we had well over 50% left in the tank when going to bed one night, and that wasn’t on a particularly low-use day however, when you add in moving around, switching between 4G and 5G networks , and turning on the phone more regularly when on the go, that battery life dropped to around 16-18 hours between charges on a high-use day.
It’s odd that Apple has reduced the video playback stamina on the iPhone 12 stating that it will last 17 hours, rather than the 18 hours offered by the iPhone 11.
The A14 Bionic chipset at the heart of the iPhone is promised to be more power-efficient than before, while still achieving some of the best performance stats of any phone on the market.

In his iPhone 12 Mini review, our own David Imel called it one of the best small phones you can get. Of course, its not without its issues. The camera isnt as feature-packed as the one available with the Pro editions, and the phone is difficult to align on a wireless charging stand. Its biggest selling points are its size and price. As David says, getting great build quality and incredible performance in a phone this small, for this price, is great.
