Is The Apple Pencil Worth The Money

How to Use Apple Pencil on iPhone & ANY iPad

For anyone who wants to take advantage of the iPad for drawing, sketching, note taking, or other similar activities, the Apple Pencil is absolutely worth the money, but for those who don’t need all of the advanced features, there are some similar styluses on the market like the much more affordable Logitech Crayon.

Is Apple Pencil Support Finally Coming To iPhone

Apple Pencil isn’t just for creatives. To highlight this notion, Apple’s likely to add an essential feature for the writing tool in the coming weeks that could prove useful to everyone from students and teachers to business users. The move, however, only makes real sense if something else is announced. Could this be the year Apple Pencil support finally arrives on the iPhone?

According to 9to5Mac, code in iOS 14 suggests big changes are coming to mobile Safari. Among the changes could be Apple Pencil support for the native app for the first time. If correct, the support could allow users to draw and markup website pages on the fly.

Cupertino launched the first Apple Pencil nearly five years ago. At the time, the wireless stylus only worked with iPad Pro tablets and was marketed to the drawing and note-taking crowd almost exclusively, as was the iPad Pro itself. Since then, first-generation Apple Pencil support has been extended to other iPad models, including the 2019 iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad. The second-generation Apple Pencil arrived in late 2018. This model, which offers magnetic wireless charging, only works with iPad Pro models that have a USB-C connector.

I believe we’re likely to see Apple Pencil support arrive in iOS 14 for the upcoming iPhone 12 series. Further, a next-generation Apple Pencil could launch in the color black. Previous models, of course, are white.

How Apple Pencil Works

In the absolute simplest terms: Apples 9.7-, 10.5-, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models are equipped with a thin layer of electromagnetically-charged film underneath their display, which enables Apple Pencil functionality by detecting input elements from the stylus precision tip such as pressure/force, angle, or speed. Its a two part system, in other words, that allows Apple Pencil to communicate with iPad Pro via Bluetooth, utilizing an ultra low-power ARM-based M3 chip, a 3-Axis accelerometer, and other advanced components to churn out buttery-smooth digital ink on those massive iPad displays.

Tilt To Shade Press For Pressure

When drawing using the Apple Pencil, you can easily shade in an area of your work by tilting the Apple Pencil towards one side and moving the flat side of the Pencil tip to shade it in, just as you could with an analog pencil on paper.

The Apple Pencil is also pressure sensitive, with most drawing and writing apps that support Apple Pencil allowing you to create thicker or thinner lines and shapes depending on how much pressure you put on the Pencil tip.

Steve Jobs famously said, about tablets, “If you need a stylus, youve already failed.” But he was talking about using a stylus as the main input device for a tablet. When Apple released the Apple Pencil in 2015, this quote was revived to remind people that a) things have changed, and b) Steve Jobs wasnt always right.

In 2018, Apple released a second version of the Apple Pencil, with more advanced features designed for the then new iPad Pro models. And Logitech also sells the Crayon, their less expensive pencil, which is compatible with certain iPads.

iOS 14 takes the Pencil further, with Scribble, a new technology that allows you to write in any location where text is accepted.

In this article Im going to tell you everything you can do with the Apple Pencil, and the Logitech Crayon.

Best Apple Pencil Alternatives 202: What Stylus Is For You

The best Apple Pencil rivals for writing, painting and drawing

The Apple Pencil is a lovely thing for scribbling and sketching, annotating and illustrating. Whether youre writing notes or creating intricate artworks it delivers impressive results thanks to a combination of pressure detection, tilt detection and rotation detection. Why would you want to use something else instead?

There are a few reasons. First of all theres price: the first-gen Apple Pencil is $99 / £89 / AU$145 and the second generation is $129 / £119 / AU$199. Many rival devices are considerably cheaper.

Secondly, theres compatibility, because Apple Pencils only work with certain iPads and the second generation model only works with iPad Pros including the latest iPad Pro 12.9 model, along with the new iPad mini. Regardless, many rival styluses work on more devices, and some of them work on other firms tablets too.

Theres its charging, which requires you to stick the Pencil into your iPad in a rather inelegant way because you lost the little Lightning adapter months ago.

And finally, and possibly most importantly for artistic types, theres personal taste. Artists care deeply about their tools, and what feels right in one hand might not feel right in another.

Thats why weve investigated the best Apple Pencil alternatives, ranging from the simplest, cheapest styluses for scribbling notes to serious models for professional artists.

Would You Make Use Of Apple Pencil Support On iPhone

A pair of recent reports indicate that this year could bring the first iPhones to offer Apple Pencil support. After the $329 2018 iPad was updated to work with the $99 accessory earlier this year, is this something youd find useful on the 2018 5.8-inch or 6.5-inch iPhones?

Speculation on Apple Pencil support for iPhone has been going on for years now. After Tim Cook accidentally referenced Apple Pencil use with iPhone in 2016 ahead of the iPhone 7/7 Plus launch, some thought support was going to come with those devices.

Since then, weve seen numerous patents around iPhone use with the accessory, and one report about the possibility of a smaller sized Apple Pencil.

Samsungs Galaxy Note series has offered a built-in stylus since the first generation debuted in 2011 with a 5.3-inch screen. The companys latest, the Note 9, features a 6.4-inch screen with an updated S Pen stylus that can also be used to snap photos and control presentations. Samsung even used the current lack of Apple Pencil support on iPhone as material for its Ingenius ad series.

Back when Tim Cook slipped and mentioned iPhone Apple Pencil use, 33% of 9to5Mac readers said theyd definitely use the Apple stylus with a compatible iPhone, while 35% said maybe.

How about you? Whether youre already using an Apple Pencil with iPad now or not, is iPhone support for the stylus something youd use? Let us know in the poll and comments below!

Tale Of Two Technologies

A while ago I wrote about the different requirements for 3D Touch-based pressure sensitivity and Apple Pencil-based pressure sensitivity:

With 3D Touch on the iPhone, an array of capacitive sensors integrated into the LED backlight system measure microscopic changes in the distance between the array and the cover glassthe kind of changes created by pressure from your finger.

That’s combined with data from the accelerometer, which knows how your iPhone is moving through space, and with data from the capacitive multitouch sensor, which knows where your finger is on the horizontal and vertical planes. That way, Apple’s algorithm can provide for the precise, linear, and continuous tracking of pressure events.

And because Apple is likely moving away from LCD/LED to OLED in iPhone 8, and will need to implement a different force detection system:

Rumor has it Apple will use a film sensor instead. It’s reportedly more expensive but takes up less space, is even more precise, and could theoretically allow for multiple simultaneous points of pressure detection.

Both implementations are different than how Apple Pencil currently works. From my original iPad Pro review:

Putting the two technologies together adds both complexity and cost. It has to be done in such a way that neither interferes with or compromises each other, nor raises the bill of goods higher than Apple’s price points would allow.

Why There’s No Apple Pencil Support On iPhone

iPhone 11 Adding Apple Pencil Support? – Do we want this or 3D Touch?

I’ve wanted Apple Pencil support on iPhone specifically iPhones with larger than 5-inch displays for a long time. My background is in art and design and the idea of having a tiny drawing pad delights me. It’s my favorite thing about Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 series. It’s not my favorite implementation , but the idea of being able to doodle anywhere, any time I have my phone in hand is beyond compelling. Same for markup, notes, all of it.

So far, though, Apple’s kept Pencil exclusive to iPad. Why?

Wacom knows more about writing on tablets than anybody since Moses, so its no surprise to see two of its styluses in our top five. The Sketch is a fine-tipped, pressure sensitive stylus that works on iPad and iPhone via Bluetooth. Its compatible with iPhones from the iPhone 6 onwards, although check the app compatibility list before buying: for example Adobe Sketch and Procreate are not compatible on iPad Pros.

The Sketch has a choice of replaceable soft and firm tips as well as two customizable buttons to make it fit your particular preferences. Unlike the Apple Pencil it charges via USB rather than a Lightning port, and you can expect around 16 hours between charges. Its brilliant for sketching and drawing, and its worth shopping around for: the Sketch can be hard to find but its worth tracking down.

Logitechs Apple Pencil alternative has something many other styluses lack: the Apple seal of approval. On paper the seven-hour battery looks a bit rubbish compared to rivals, but you can get 30 minutes of use from a two-minute fast charge so we dont think thats a deal-breaker.

Reasons to avoid

For note taking, though, its brilliant. Its nice and chunky in the hand and it has a twist mechanism to turn it on and off, and to hide the fine tip when youre not using it. It comes in four colors, has a single programmable shortcut button and charges via USB expect around 15 hours of use between charges.

Heres Which Apple Pencil Works With Which iPad

Steve Jobs was famously not a fan of styluses, but regardless, you have to admit the Apple Pencil is tremendously useful when sketching, writing, or doing any sort of detail work on a touchscreen. That was even more true from iPadOS 14 on, thanks to the amazing Scribble feature, which allows you to handwrite in any text box and have it translated to plain text.

If youre a keen artist or note taker, then the Apple Pencil is a must-buy for your iPad. But wait a moment before you tap Buy do you know whether your iPad is compatible with the Apple Pencil and which generation of Apple Pencil you need? Thats right, the Apple Pencil isnt a one-size-fits-all tool youll need to buy the correct Pencil to suit your iPad. And since prices for the Pencil start at around $100, youll want to be absolutely sure youre buying the right one the first time. But dont worry weve got a simple guide so you can be sure youre buying the right Apple Pencil.

The Best Stylus For iPads And iPhones In 2021

The best stylus for iPads and iPhones isn’t just useful for digital art. It’s something that can really enhance everyone’s experience of using their smartphone and tablet on a daily basis.

You can use a stylus to make quick notes, annotate documents, create technical drawings, or make quick sketches when you’re hit by inspiration. Plus they make using apps and the web much easier, letting you click on tiny icons without fumbling around with your fingers.

Not all styluses, though, are equal. They vary wildly in terms of battery life. Some offer palm rejection, which means that the screen won’t register if you accidentally touch it with your hand. Others offer pressure sensitivity, making them as responsive as a real pencil on real paper ideal for artists.

Below you’ll find the best stylus for iPads and iPhones, and discover what each has to offer. The first are for iPads only, while numbers 7 onwards also work on iPhone.

Just Buy A Proper Stylus

If youre really sold on the idea of using a stylus on your iPhone, though, there are much better options. Amazon has them from as little as $2, and you can even buy a 10-pack for less than $9, making the pens 87 cents each. Thats probably cheaper than napkins in the long-term, and you dont have to dip your $100 Apple Pencil in water every time you want to use it, like some olde-timey quill and inkpot.

If nothing else, though, this is a neat demonstration of how capacitive touchscreens work, and why they work so badly when they get wet.

There are two different versions of the Apple Pencil: Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil . But it’s important to know the difference between both generations because neither are supported on all iPad devices. The second-generation Apple pencil only works on certain iPad Pro models .

Change What A Double Tap Does

One useful feature of your Apple Pencil is the ability to double-tap it to change the functionality of the stylus. It’s limited to a few options, but you can choose to either have it Switch Between Current Tool and Eraser or Switch Between Current Tool and Last Used. You also have the option to double-tap to Show Color Palette if you prefer, which is a handy feature if you’re using your iPad for lots of graphic works in programs like Photoshop or Procreate.

    Apple Pencil Cost & Compatibility

Neither the first generation nor second-generation Apple Pencil comes with any iPad. Its an optional accessory. The first-generation Apple Pencil costs $99 and the second-generation Apple Pencil costs $129.

Yes, thats a bit steep, but Apple Pencil fans say the cost is worth it.

However, which one you can buy depends on which iPad you own. Thats because the first-generation and second-generation Apple Pencils only work with select iPads. Heres which Apple Pencil works with which iPads, according to Apple

    1st gen Apple Pencil:

    • iPad
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Pro 12.9-inch
    • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
    • iPad Pro 12.9-inch
    • iPad Pro 11-inch
    • iPad Air

Does Apple Pencil Work With iPhone?

No, the Apple Pencil does NOT work with the iPhone. Neither the first generation nor second-generation Apple Pencil works with any iPhone, including the iPhone 13 series or any iPhone Pro model.

The fact that the Apple Pencil does not work with any iPhone is a big bummer to make iPhone users. Thats especially true as iPhones keep getting larger displays year after year. Many think that this reason alone is more than enough reason for Apple to add Apple Pencil support to iPhones.

After all, the iPad mini 6th generation, which works with the Apple Pencil has an 8.3 inch display. But the largest iPhone, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 6.7 inch display, which isnt much smaller. Its easy to see how that iPhone, at least, could work well with the Apple Pencil.
