Apple announced the 5G-enabled version of the iPhone SE earlier this week, and at the outset, it doesn’t look all that different from its predecessor that launched two years ago. That’s by design the iPhone SE is aimed at users that want a familiar iPhone experience, so it features a physical home button with integrated Touch ID and a form factor that makes it easy to use one-handed.

With iPhones getting taller, wider, and more complex with every new generation, the iPhone SE is designed to deliver the basics while still giving you a great camera and the latest internal hardware.

5G still isnt a revolution in 2022

While 5G isnt worthless, in 2022, its not the revolutionary, must-have technology that cell carriers are pitching it as. Speeds are still lackluster in most cases, requiring very specific conditions with mmWave networks or the still-nascent mid-band networks that most of the USs main carriers are still struggling to roll out. Several years in, and 5G is still more a marketing note than a revolutionary change to how most people use the internet on the go.

I included design on my list of top features for the iPhone SE 3 because some people really enjoy the smaller form factor and physical Home button. But for those of you who are primarily attracted to the iPhone SE 3 due to its price, the old long-in-the-tooth iPhone 8-era design can be seen as a negative. The screen, at 4.7-inches, is smaller than the iPhone mini, and it genuinely feels cramped to use, while the large bezels make the device feel ten years old.

Up to 2 hours of extra video playback over the iPhone SE 2nd Gen that is what Apple claims on its website. A little digging around on the internet revealed a gain of 200mAh of extra capacity over the iPhone SE 2nd Gen’s battery. The real world result? It is still no battery champ like the iPhone 13 but it now crawls into the full-day battery territory when used in 4G network all day. Note this, since 5G networks are bound to offer higher battery drain.

With my moderate use pattern involving the usual social media browsing, taking 2 hours of calls on an average daily, music streaming, and some good amount of still photography, the iPhone SE 3rd Gen can now easily make it to the end of the day, with 20-25 percent battery left. On my 2nd Gen iPhone SE, it needed a mid-day refill under the same use case.

You will need the 20W Apple charger to fill up its battery the fastest, and a 0-50 percent recharge can be done within 30 minutes. From 50-100 percent, you will need to wait at least an hour. This is not the fastest charging mechanism but it does the work. I still recommend keeping a power bank handy while venturing outdoors for a whole day.

Get The iPhone Se 2020 If You Like Compact Phones

You just have to look around you to see that phone screen sizes are growing ever larger. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, for instance features a 6.9-inch screen, while even the smallest member of the Galaxy S20 family boasts a display that’s larger than 6 inches. So heavy is the demand for expansive smartphone screens that companies are now trying to develop foldable phones with displays that fold out into even larger panels.

And if you’re someone with tiny hands like me, you look at these comically oversized smartphones and shake your head, wondering if there’s even a place for folks like us in this Bigger Must Be Better world.

Since my current phone became unreliable, I’ve been using the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max as a replacement. And having to fumble my way with this super-sized iPhone has only cemented my disdain for phablets. It’s impossible for me to use this phone one-handed. The iPhone 11 Pro Max slips out of my tiny mitts with depressing frequency. When I put it into a pocket, I feel like I’m lugging around a flat-panel TV.

I will not have that problem with the iPhone SE 2020. Even though it’s larger than the original 4-inch model, the new 4.7-inch phone should fit comfortably in my hand and even more comfortably in my pocket. Despite the industry push toward large screens, there’s still a thirst out for compact phones, and the iPhone SE figures to immediately land on our list of the best small phones.

iPhone Se: Design And Display

Currently, the most reliable analysts expect the next iPhone SE to physically resemble the current model. Thats perhaps a little disappointingthe iPhone SE is based on the body of the iPhone 8, which is now discontinued. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple plans to move ahead with another SE model to feature the 4.7-inch LCD display, a Home button with Touch ID, and no Face ID. In October, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants reported that the next iPhone SE will have the same 4.7-inch display as the current model, adding that the rumored iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch LCD is now pushed to 2024.

In other words, the next iPhone SE is once again rumored to be based on the iPhone 8s shell, with select new components. Nikkei Asia reported in July that the next SE will look like a refreshed version of the iPhone 8 and have a 4.7-inch liquid crystal diode display.

Apple is also said to be working on an updated version of the iPhone 11, with an LCD display between 5.7 inches and 6.1 inches and Touch ID either in the display or part of the power button, but likely for a 2023 or 2024 release. Apple still sells the iPhone 11 for $499 and a new SE with a similar design would directly compete with it at a lower price.

If it were just about saving money, the iPhone SE 2020 would already be a compelling buy. But you’re getting a lot of features for just $399.

For starters, the iPhone SE has the A13 Bionic chipset, the same one powering Apple’s iPhone 11 lineup. The A13 has proven to be the best-performing mobile processor we’ve tested, beating out even the newer Snapdragon 865 in head-to-head benchmarks. For The iPhone Se Is 3 The Magic Number

The iPhone SE will be priced to sell, coming in considerably cheaper than the iPhone 14. Although some reports say it’ll be called the iPhone SE 3, that’s believed to be a larger model due in 2024: this SE may be called the iPhone SE Plus, because Apple’s naming strategy doesn’t make sense any more.

Inside it’s effectively an iPhone 13: an Apple A15 processor with 5G and the same performance. But the outside is expected to remain the same as the current generation, thick bezels and all: the panel is expected to remain 4.7 inches and LCD rather than the OLED displays of other iPhones. Don’t expect a mini-LED iPhone SE any time soon.

So it’s not the greatest display and nobody’s going to think it’s as exciting as a Samsung Galaxy S21. But it doesn’t need to be. More Storage In The Base Model

The 2022 iPhone SE got its debut at Apple’s Peek Performance event.

Apple increased the iPhone 13 lineup’s base storage capacity up to 128GB from 64GB. Unfortunately, that approach didn’t trickle down to the new iPhone SE, which starts at 64GB of storage. You could argue that the 128GB iPhone SE, which costs $479, is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the base iPhone 13. But Apple is still behind its competitors in this regard: Samsung’s $400 Galaxy A42 5G, comes with 128GB of internal storage, as does Google’s $449 Pixel 5A with 5G.
