Should I upgrade my iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S ?

Apple in April 2020 unveiled the iPhone SE, a new low-cost iPhone that marries the design of the iPhone 8 with the super fast A13 chip in the iPhone 11, all for a super low $399 price tag.

If you have an older iPhone, like an iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, or an even earlier iPhone, you may be wondering whether it’s worth the upgrade to a newer device. In a nutshell, the answer is yes, but we’ll walk through the reasons why in the guide below.

Phones Are Built To Last

Smartphones like the iPhone are built from materials like stainless steel and aluminum. The newest devices, for example, include a glass that is the most durable glass ever in a smartphone, Apple says. If your phone is not horribly cracked and its running just fine, think of it like a reliable car. Just keep driving it until you really, truly need another.

Finally, consider what choice works best financially for you, too. Apple has its own upgrade program designed for people who feel they must have the latest device annually. For example, the company charges $49.91 monthly for the iPhone XS, but after youve carried it around for a year, youll be able to get the next gadget if youve been making your payments. You can also trade in a phone directly to the company for some money off the sticker price of another one. Additionally, individual carriers offer their own payment schemes: For instance, AT& T hawks options called Next and Next Every Year the first option divides the cost of the phone into 30 payments. After youve paid off 80%, you can upgrade, or keep paying to keep it.

But if you already own your phone free and clear, and upgrading represents an additional hit to your wallet, you may be best served to wait until next year if youre happy with what you have.

Upgrading To The iPhone 12

Ask Ars: When should I plan to upgrade my iPhone?

The iPhone 12 line of smartphones is Apple’s latest. They come in four different models, which include the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This new set of iPhones is one of the more substantial upgrades. Upgrade highlights include 5G compatibility, Dolby Vision video recording, the A14 Bionic processor, and the largest iPhone ever .

If you have any of the iPhone 11 devices, and you’re on the fence about upgrading, you should probably stick with the phone you have. The iPhone 11 is still one of the better phones available, and you likely won’t be missing the new features enough to make the upgrade worth it. Learn more in our side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11.

If, however, you have an older iPhone and you’re debating on upgrading, it might be time to move on to the iPhone 12. You’re going to get to experience some significantly improved features with your new device. Of course, if you’re perfectly happy with your current phone, there’s no real need for an upgrade.

Haptic Touch Instead Of 3d Touch

If you’re upgrading from an iPhone 6s, 7, or 8, you might be used to the 3D Touch feature that lets you access hidden menus and other features when pressing a finger down on the iPhone’s display.

The iPhone SE doesn’t have 3D Touch, but it does have something similar – Haptic Touch. Haptic Touch isn’t quite the same thing because there’s no pressure sensitivity, but it acts in the same way and can accomplish the same tasks.

You Can Replace The Battery Now

One reason your smartphone doesn’t perform as well as it ages is the battery degrades over time.Think about how little you actually turn your phone off. The battery is running all the time. “As your battery health degrades, so can its ability to deliver peak performance,” reads an explainer on Apple’s website. Unlike the early days of the iPhone, you have the option of replacing your battery. Apple charges $49 to replace batteries on devices ranging from the iPhone 6 to the second-generation iPhone SE. If you own an iPhone X or later, it costs $69. Getting a new battery gives that older iPhone some extra life, and for a lot less than the cost of a new iPhone.

Storage & Battery Life

Once again, when it comes to storage and battery, a lot will depend on what you’re currently working with. If you purchased an iPhone X with only 64GB of storage, you might have decided by now that this isn’t enough to support your music or photography habits. In this case, upgrading to a larger 256GB iPhone 11 would be a great upgrade.

The same goes for battery life. While the iPhone X and iPhone 11 have somewhat similar battery life , an older iPhone 7 or 8 may not be giving you even half of that. So if your current model is barely getting you through lunch before it dies, the long-lasting iPhone 11 could make a significant difference in your daily routine.

Compare iPhone 7 And iPhone 13

iPhone 7 uses the old A10 Fusion processor, without a neural engine chip to handle artificial intelligence tasks. Compared to the latest technologies that Apple is using, the iPhone 7s processor is several years behind.

The iPhone 7 has a single rear camera, without Portrait mode, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a dual camera. The iPhone 7s camera doesnt have modern features like Night mode and Portrait Lightning, which add specific lighting effects to the photos you take.

The iPhone 7 series still has a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and screen sizes of 4.7 or 5.5 inches, respectively. iPhone 7 does not have wireless charging so you only have the option of plugging in to charge and cant use the charging dock.

If youve owned an iPhone 7 for several years, youll feel stuck because of the lack of storage space. The cheapest iPhone 7 model has only 32GB of space, which is a quarter of the capacity of the cheapest iPhone 13.

Compared to the iPhone 7, it is clear that the iPhone 13 is superior in all areas. The standard iPhone 13 has a larger, sharper, and brighter 6.1-inch bezel-less display. However, because there is no Home button, the iPhone 13 feels more compact than the iPhone 7.

iPhone 13 uses Apples latest A15 Bionic chip, so it will better handle new features. The new chip also ensures that all your experiences are smoother and faster. In addition, the 5G connection on the iPhone 13 will obviously bring many benefits to users.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 11

Apple started its Pro and Pro Max iterations with the iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max featured identical hardware, with the only difference being the screen size 5.8-inch vs 6.5-inch and the size of the battery. On the other hand, the standard iPhone 11 had a display with a lower resolution and one less rear camera, with the Pro editions adding a telephoto lens.

Powered by the Apple A13 Bionic and backed by 4GB of RAM, the iPhone 11 series is still powerful enough to offer smooth performance with iOS 15 and use all the new software features. There are a few key differences that make the iPhone 13 the better of the two.

Our verdict:iPhone 11 review | iPhone 11 Pro Max review

The iPhone 13 phones come with OLED screens that offer a better display experience than the LCD displays of the iPhone 11. Youll also get better performance, more camera features, improved battery life, and better durability with the iPhone 13 series. The software experience will stay the same, though, and the iPhone 11 cameras are more than good enough even in 2021.

Unless you need the latest and greatest processing package and cameras, you can probably hold on to the iPhone 11 for at least another year. That said, this is where the trade-in values start to get good, with up to $500 for the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 12 12 Pro

The purple iPhone 12.

If you have an iPhone 12, there’s little reason to upgrade right now. That’s because the iPhone 12 has a lot in common with the iPhone 13. They both have 5G support, a vibrant OLED 6.1-inch screen, a fast processor, great cameras and MagSafe accessory support. The biggest reasons to consider upgrading are the camera updates — especially for shooting video — and the longer battery life.

All of Apple’s new iPhones, including the standard iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, are getting a new video shooting feature called Cinematic mode, which automatically switches the focus between subjects to give footage a more filmlike aesthetic. It looks like a neat trick for those who frequently use their phones for video projects, and our reviewer Patrick Holland had a blast testing it out. Apple says that Cinematic mode takes advantage of the new A15 Bionic processor, but it’s worth noting that Apple also has a history of bringing enhancements like these to previous iPhones through software updates.

As is usually the case, Apple’s bigger photography improvements can be found on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. Night mode works on all three rear camera lenses, including the telephoto lens, and the Pro models can also take macro shots that can focus in on a subject as close as 2 centimeters. Should You Upgrade To The iPhone 13 From The iPhone Xr And iPhone Xs

Should I upgrade my iPhone 5S to iOS 9?

Cast your mind back to 2018 an era when Apple still produced single-lens flagship phones, and Smart HDR was the big innovation for Apple’s photo software. This was back before there was even an official Pro lineup with Apple using the letters S and R to distinguish between its different iPhone X successors.

What you get by upgrading: The iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max use an older A12 Bionic chip, and the advances Apple’s made in the past three years should lead to a definite improvement in performance. Camera performance will be better, too, largely because there’s no ultrawide angle lens on the iPhone XS and XS Max and just a single camera on the back of the iPhone XR. Forget about low-light shots Night Mode wouldn’t arrive until the iPhone 11 lineup.

Upgrading your phone will likely mean a boost in storage, as this was squarely in Apple’s “64GB Is Plenty” era. Both the iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11 offered great battery life at the time, but we imagine the bigger batteries on the iPhone 13 will impress particularly if these older phones are starting to show their age.

Current iPhone XR and XS trade-in values from Apple: At this point, the trade-in values are starting to dwindle, but iPhone XS Max can still fetch up to $320 from Apple on a trade-in. The values for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR aren’t all that different.

Signs Its Time To Upgrade Your iPhone

Wondering if your iPhone is on its last legs? Here are all the signs to tell when it’s time to upgrade your iPhone.

Although you dont always need to buy the latest iPhone, you will eventually need to upgrade to a newer device. But knowing when to upgrade your iPhone is sometimes difficult.

Are you having issues with your phone but dont know if you should get the device fixed or buy a new one altogether? This guide will identify the most prominent signs that its time to upgrade your iPhone after all.

Should You Upgrade To The iPhone 13 From The iPhone 12

Like the iPhone 13, the iPhone 12 comes in four models, with each model the exact same size as its successor. In fact, the prices on the four new iPhone 13 models mirror those of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max back when they debuted. So what exactly is the reason to upgrade less than a year after those four phones launched?

What you get by upgrading: Opt for any iPhone 13 model over the iPhone 12, and you’ll immediately see a pretty powerful processor, as the new phones feature Apple’s A15 Bionic chipset. Our testing shows the new processor outperforming the iPhone 12 and all other smartphone competition on the Geekbench 5 test, and Apple has promised a 50% boost in graphics performance over the competition. The GPU on the iPhone 13 Pro models sports an extra core five cores to the iPhone 13’s four so an upgrade should definitely deliver a performance boost on graphically-intense apps.

A bigger change has come with the battery sizes in the iPhone 13. Apple has increased their capacity for all iPhone 13 models, although the difference is more significant on the larger handset sizes. Considering how we were disappointed with iPhone 12 battery life the iPhone 12 Pro Max excluded that’s a big move. As a result, we saw the iPhone 13 series phones last between one to three hours longer than their iPhone 12 counterparts.

Our iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 comparison details all the changes between last year’s phones and the new models.
